Yohan Cabaye was blown away by the St. James’ Park crowd and the atmosphere they created tonight, as the top French International made his competitive debut for the club.
Yohan Cabaye – blown away by St. James’ Park atmosphere
The size of the crowd was actually disappointing, at just under 47,000, but we wont tell Yohan that, and the newcomer had a quiet first half, but a much better second half, as he acclimatized to the Premier League.
25 year old Cabaye said that when he first went out in front of the Newcastle crowd it was perfect and something he will always remember, and already thinks the Newcastle fans are brilliant:
“It was nearly 47,000? Wow. At Lille it was normally 15,000!”
“For me that was perfect. I love the English atmosphere, the English fans. Newcastle fans are brilliant.” “I am happy to start in the team, in the Premier League, and with the atmosphere. That was fantastic.”
“It was a good first game for me and for the team because Arsenal are a good side. I am very tired. It was very tough, but when I play more games I will get better and it will be okay for me.”“I will work a lot to get fitter.” “We have played one game and got one point – a good point – and now we have to work for Sunderland next week. We have to win there.”
We saw some of the French magic in the second half tonight, with Cabaye and Obertan looking good, and once the new boys settle down, it looks like Newcastle will become a very decent side this season.
If Yohan thinks the crowd was excellent tonight, then just see what it will be like if Newcastle actually do well this season, and we’ll not even mention the Sunderland game next Saturday.
It was a very good point for Newcastle, after a tough first half, but Newcastle could even have shaded the win, once Gervinho had been dismissed for clashing with Joey Barton after 75 minutes.
Newcastle didn’t exactly deserve the win, but we would have taken the 3 points anyway, but are very happy with the draw.
Comments welcome.

I thought he was a good player today. looked sharp with some passes.

It’s great how humble he is… I was hoping it was going to be over 50,000 today so it was disapointing to see a crowd that was similar to what we had in the championship!! HTL

Looked solid and broke into the box on a few occasions. Definitely a all-rounder, just need to stop bypassing the midfield with punts.

low attendance, no?
5 Mystic Mikes' iron curtain // Aug 13, 2011 at 10:37 PM
Oh, and Cheik needs to shape up – our worst player today – contributed nil, just gave the ball away and missed tackles.

7 Mystic Mikes' iron curtain // Aug 13, 2011 at 10:42 PM
Someone made the comparison between Rob Lee and Cabaye, can definitely see where they’re coming from.
8 Andy // Aug 13, 2011 at 10:43 PM
tiote looked a bit out of sorts today i agree. Was getting forward quite a bit which i didn’t see him do much of last year. For me tiote should just be our dm. Break it up and keep the ball. Let the creative lads like joey and cabaye do the attacking. He looked better second half. Playing against arsenal never easy but he looked good. With a bit more movement up top he would show he has an eye for a pass
9 Nufc-83 // Aug 13, 2011 at 10:43 PM
Mystic mike stop going on about tiote yes he wasnt his normal top class self but he wasnt anywere near as bad as what your making out. He covered plenty of ground and got stuck in jeeez give it a rest.

It was nice to see that even he had a cheeky smile when he picked up his yellow card today.
12 ToonDownSouth // Aug 13, 2011 at 10:48 PM
The comment “we need to win there” makes me like the lad. He’s come from a team offering Champions League football, and regardless of the reasons for coming here (possibly money, yes), he is a winner
13 Toon1978 // Aug 13, 2011 at 10:48 PM
Tiote held onto the ball a little long today and was caught in possession time and time again and his passing wasn’t up to his normal standard.
14 Andy // Aug 13, 2011 at 10:49 PM
dmac was he not lying on the ground begging? Haha the ref was standing there laughing at him. Tiote wasn’t terrible just not as good as he could have been. Suppose he’s been stranded in ghana for 2 weeks. Big game next week so hopefully he’s on his game then
15 ToonDownSouth // Aug 13, 2011 at 10:51 PM
Suarez is a cheating little arse isn’t he…
But what a goal by Larsson. Congrats to Sunderland, my new 19th favorite Premier League side

This is only tiotes 2/3rd game? Barely played pre season so is still lacking game time this season think by 4th game the usual chieck will be back
17 beefman13 // Aug 13, 2011 at 10:57 PM
this kid is going to be a top player for the toon, tiot elooked sluggish and needs games to get up to fitness, would defo play best up front, obertan would start, were was marveux he must not be fit enough and may take a bit of time to get up to speed. joey will prob stay with us now as other clubs will be scared off ,to much to handle.

Good on Pardew. I’ve seen 3 interviews with him now where he’s defended Joey to the end. Top man.
21 nick_9 // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:03 PM
I was surprised at what the attendance on our opening game and against a top four team. Sign of the times? cabaye has the right attitude, I like him. Also just seen Pardews reaction on motd, loved it. ‘why barton?’ That’s what I want, defend our players. Barton, gervinho and song all could have gone, I bet the most painful thing was when song stood on the back of bartons heel/calf.
Anyone seen Piers and Wilshere on twitter? Wilshere is probably right that it could be assault in the outside world but him saying it to Barton over twitter makes me a bit annoyed. Wilshere trying to act the big man over the internet, its going to be fiesty at the emirates.
22 ToonDownSouth // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:03 PM
Everyone saying Barton went down easily, so what? If he had not gone to ground, then Gervinho would not have been sent off for what was a DEFINITE red card…
23 Dannyo // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:05 PM
If we managed a draw with Arsenal today, with a poor performance of us. Imagine what we can do on form.
fair enough, arsenal weren’t top notch either.

25 kingkev9 // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:07 PM
Cabeye cannot play in a 4-4-2 with Tiote. Both too defensive, first half passed him by. Can only play them together in a 4-5-1 formation.
Tiote was playing in front of Cabeye first half, stupid decision by Pardew, his job is too protect the back 4.
We had no link up player today, yes Ben Arfa was injured but surely a certain Mr Nolan could have done a job today?
26 Mystic Mikes' iron curtain // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:07 PM

My rating of the players today:
Krul 7 – did all great, but not much to do.
Simpson 5 – looked å bit tired, ok game.
S.Taylor 8 – outstanding, won everything.
Colo 8 – the same as Taylor, great Captain.
R.Taylor 6 – some shaky at times, but good.
Barton 6 – worked well in defence.
Cabaye 7 – very good in 2 half, nice on ball.
Tiote 5 – poor passing, but worked hard.
Gutierrez 7 – he ran and ran, helped Raylor.
Ba 3 – didnt nothing impressive, disapoited.
Ameobi 2 – the same as always.
Obertan 6 – shown pace and fine technique.
Best 4 -too like his fellow black strikers.
Lovenkrands – did nothing, too late comin in.

@15 Take that suarez comments as a personal insult lol Best striker around atm, pure class have said for the last 3-4 years we shoulda bought him.
33 nick_9 // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:11 PM
We just need to at least match last seasons performances at a minimum but hopefully better them. At the mo we have matched our home draw against Arsenal, a point at the SOS wouldn’t be to shabby. I’m going to be honest and say they did ok against Lpool today so its game on. A leftback is a must as is another striker. Simmo and gosling might do alright at rightback and hopefully we will make do with our three cb’s. Little disappointed at our strikers, seems Shola is above Best.
34 ToonDownSouth // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:11 PM

Season has started, and it wouldn’t be that surprising if a clean sheet today convinces Ashley we don;t need a left back after all.
So it really wouldn’t shock me if we make no more signings.
For me, it’s time to start focusing on the players we have – not ones that I wish were still here

36 Andy // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:14 PM
kingkev9 i don’t think they can’t play together in a 4-4-2. They still could just not against a top side like arsenal. Cabaye got forward more second half as we had more of the ball due to matching the men in the middle. Against the likes of WBA Villa and Fulham who mostly play 4-4-2 i think they can still do a job.

In the 2009/10 season he scored 15 goals for Lille :/
I think Pardew was just hoping that we could play two holding midfielders and that Ba, Ameobi would be more effective.
As it turned out, they were abysmal!

55 Andy // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:31 PM
also has for nolan being a link man i’m not so sure. He’d have got closer to the strikers but a link man would suggest he actually links play from defence to strikers but he just used to run forward and get the flick ons etc. Very good at it tbf. Cabaye would’ve scored if he had a left foot!
56 ToonDownSouth // Aug 13, 2011 at 11:33 PM

i cant for the life of me understand the low ratings of 5 for simpson and 2 for ameobi, Jesus what have they got to do to earn your praise?
Simpson had a solid game and put some great tackles in, so did Raylor, who remember is a Right winger playing at left back. and to be fair to ameobi he chased down their defenders plenty of times and had a few decent touches, yes he can be frustrating but giving him a rating of 2?? come on

Our midfield was overrun in large periodes of the game, but saying that is because Tiote and Cabaye can’t play together in a 4-4-2 formation isn’t really true. They got overrun, because Arsenal played 3 in the centre. Had we played let’s say Gosling along them instead of two big strikers, that midfield battle could have had an entirely different outcome ..

Weird right? I think Pardew may be a little too worried about getting stick from fans for playing only one up top at home on the opening day.
But everyone knows passing is Tiotes real weak point – especially today. I’d rather stick Barton or Guthrie, because they’re both exceptional passers, in a 3 man midfield. Not sure if we have the quality up top to do it though.
Jonas can score goals – we’ve seen he’s a decent finisher when he has done – so hopefully him, Marv, Obertan & Benny will do so.
What I liked today was how much Colo got forward. If that was something they’d been working on in training, it worked. A couple of the crosses he put in were amazing haha! As well as his passing & ball control. rarely see a CB that good on the ball these days

Sorry but for me cheick and cabaye were both great from a defensive point of view. . They broke up almost every attack. Only gonna get better.

Shane Long scoring for WBA today!!! should of had a punt at him for 6M – bit of a weak goal but he’s a great little poacher

I thinks Strolla must have got a rocket up his ass from pards at half time cos he hardly broke sweat in 1st half.
Second half he was chasing balls down ,holding play up and flicking the ball on from chiped balls over the top (he was the furthest player forward though but thats not important).
As soon as Obertoon came on we had an outlet and can that boy run, One of the most disappointing things for me yesterday was their corners, why oh why dont we leave Obertoon on the half way line?
Hes not tall enough to make a difference in the box, but if we get the ball we could have played it into the channels for a 1on1.
twice yesterday we go the ball from one of their corners and launched it forward to no-one and it just came straight back.
Its time to use our strengths Pards, leave the rockets on half way and let the big guns fight in the box.
I thought Ryan Taylor was much better at left back than I ever imagined, and can be a decent back up to Pieters when he comes.
I agree that Tiote and Cabaye can only play in a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 as they were both occupying the same spaces and going for the same balls a lot of the time in the 1st half.
But i think we will get better with match practice, and i cant believe people slating Tiote when he hasnt trained with Cabaye or Obertoon hardly at all yet still assisted in a good point vs the Arsenal.
The future may not be a black as people first thought
