Gabriel Obertan Impressive In Newcastle Debut

One player who impressed Newcastle fans on Saturday with his skill and speed was new signing Gabriel Obertan.

Gabriel Obertan – in action on Saturday

22 year-old Obertan has been at Newcastle since last Tuesday, and as far as he is concerned there is a good spirit in the Newcastle camp, and he also enjoyed the training last week with the Newcastle squad:

“The integration has been easy. It’s quite easy to fit into the group.” “I’m just happy that training has gone well, and the atmosphere in the group is good.”

“It’s good, I’m lucky that the fans like quick and tricky players, so I hope I’ll do well for them.”  “I’ll give my best on the pitch, and as long as the club gets results, I’ll be happy.”

“If I need to be defending more, or whatever, I’ll do it.”  “The last season was quite frustrating, so I’m up for anything on the pitch.”

Even though Newcastle struggled to hold Arsenal in the first half, the Magpies had a wonderful chance in those last 15 minutes, after Arsenal had been reduced to 10 men with the dismissal of former Newcastle target Gervinho.

But although the lads tried hard,  they couldn’t get that winning goal, and one disappointing aspect about the Newcastle performance, was they made nothing of the set plays they had.

Obertan talked about his debut for Newcastle:

“It was great, but we could have done better.”  ”They were down to 10 men. We’re still happy with one point.”   “It’s important to grab something from the big teams, but a win would have been better.”

“I was relieved. Last season especially was a bit frustrating for me, and it just felt good to be on the pitch for 45 minutes, and to enjoy my football.” The most important thing for me was to get my confidence back and make good passes.”

“I created some opportunities, so it was good overall. The only thing missing was the three points, but we are still happy with the point.”

We would have taken a point from the game before kick-off,  and it was a very good point, especially when Chelsea and Liverpool could only draw their first games too.

Now to get all 3 points at Sunderland on Saturday,  and let’s hope we have a left-back and a striker in by then too!

Obertan could be steal of the season… if he gets his confidence back in his ability – he might be a leading light in this dull-starting campaign…

Certainly sounds like he’s up for it. More pace won’t do us any harm either.

Obertan was back to his lazy self after setting up Cabeye and chasing a long ball all the way from the centre of the pitch.

Need to work on his stamina?

Any new player at Man U gets limited opportunities because of the strength of their squad, the lad will get the game time he needs to rebuild his confidence and he could become a top class signing for us

Obertan is not bad, I can see good things coming from him this season.

If we stop playing Ameobi I think this season can be a good one, but with 10 players on the pitch we’ll struggle.

Arsenal have lost Clichey and Fabregras has gone today, Eboue is off to Galataseray, Nasri could be off to City, Bendtner wants out and we all know Wenger will not spend, just glad to see we’re not the only one’s in the league who are seeing everything dismantled

    @ 8

Been telling people to look around at other clubs who arent spending a lot… its not just toon.

But the talk is around 7 mill for pieters who is supposed to be a great LB and terrific defender. Then the strikers we are linked to have all been around the 8-15mill mark so could be a good finish.

    @ 4 – Are you kidding me?

Do you have any idea how far he sprinted for that ball that the whole world thought was going out of play?!

He started off from a right back position, saw play opening up and with a meep, meep hit the corner flag in a bout 6 seconds!

He was moving looking for the ball and happily slotted in to a central role as well as at tims tracking back when Simmo had overlapped!

    Class signing for £3 million…

Magpietillidie22 still believe that if we get Pieters and a quality striker in we can take 8/9 place this season, we were only one game away from top 10 last season but people seem to forget that

He generally don’t play in the depth (Maiga). Thats the main technical problem i think.

I don’t see him catch Ben arfa and Cabaye’s pass.

    V Sunderland…

    ————————————-Shola Ameobi———————————
    (Best sub 60/70 min
    depending on performance)

Subs: Forster, Williamson, R.Taylor, Gosling, Sammy Ameobi, Best, Vuckic

This team could beat the Mackems if the midfield perform to their potential, and i think this team would finish anywhere between 15th and 9th

    Fully Fit Squad…

    —————————————-Ben Arfa———————————–

    —————————————-New ST————————————

Subs: Forster, Williamson, R.Taylor, Obertan, Barton(Vuckic if Barton has left), Best, Shola Ameobi

This team could easily beat the mackems and finish anywhere between 12th and 7th

What’s the lowest amount of goals we’ve scored, over the duration of a season? Think we might break it this year.

Definitely mate, once this team gels together it is going to be a quality side. I really dont care how much they cost, this team is going to be full of creativity and pace which is exactly what I as a NUFC fan want to see at SJP every week.

If we bring in a quick striker and Pieters we will be in top 10 def but if the league is tight like last year we could finish anywhere from 5th – 12th imo.

Our defence (CBs in particular) looked outstanding at the weekend and with that base we look good, I dont care what the negative fans think

Obertan should start this week in place of Joey “Long Ball” Barton. When your away from home you need somebody like Obertan on the counter attack. He will run with the ball which will allow the defence time to move out, unlike Barton who just hoofed it everytime he got it against Arsenal put the team back under pressure. I would like to find Barton’s stats for that game, probably the worst pass completion stats for a midfielder in premier league history.

Disappointing that Gosling andVuckic dodn’t get on the pitch.

They were our best players pre-season.

Best is far better than Ameobi, why can’t Pardew see this?

We need to sign Pieters and 2 strikers IMO…
    Pieters – 7 mill
    Bentner – 7 mill
    Sulejmani – 10 mill

that would make us a european team!

Now that my fellow Geordies, is a football team..

    Seen this?

Now that would be an unbelievable coup. If Pieters doesn’t sign, this would more than make up for it. Would love it to happen but he would cost near £10M.

Wouldn’t mind one of the Man U youngsters on a season long loan along with that Modibo Maiga. Hopefully would keep Ameobi as 4th Striker.
Maiga or Ba = 1st choice
    Man U youngster = 2nd choice
    Ameobi = 4th choice
