Latest On Newcastle Efforts To Sign Erik Pieters

There was news in the Sunday Sun yesterday that Newcastle had offered PSV defender Erik Pieters a four year deal.

Erik Pieters – fee agreed?

That would suggest Newcastle had already agreed a fee with PSV for the player, but news today in the Mail is that Newcastle have raised their bid for Pieters to £7M, so perhaps a fee hasn’t yet been agreed after all.

Newcastle are desperate to get the player signed up ready for the derby game at Sunderland on Saturday, and if we are to believe the news, Erik wants to move to Tyneside and join his big pal and Dutch colleague, Tim Krul.

Pieters recently lost his grandmother and has been on compassionate leave, but he did return and play the full game for PSV in Saturday’s 1-0 win over RKC Waalwijk.

The Sunday Sun suggested that Newcastle are trying to tie the deal up by tomorrow,  so if things are as advanced as they seem, then we should expect something to break in the next 48 hours.

Here’s hoping we can get this 23 year-old on Tyneside, since he looks a very good player.

    Modibo Maiga – 23yr old – 6’1?
35 Goals from 165 apperances at all levels!?

He isn’t an out and out striker, he can play as a winger too! We need a target man!

Gstadt – know nothing about Maiga, how good is he?? Is he up alongside say Sturridge or a replacement for Bambi?

@Graeme don’t know anything about Maiga but suspect it’s on Graham Carr’s recommendation, which is good enough for me 🙂

    We need a target man?

To me a target man is a big guy, good in the air, is that what you mean? That’s the last thing we need. A small pacey guy is what we need, we have enough big men.

I think Maiga scored 15 goals in his last 30 games didn’t he?

Maiga played as a striker last season and scored regularly (16 in 35) i think. But it was in a very exciting attacking side with Ryad Boudebouz and Marvin Martin pulling the strings in midfield.

@ 6 – Never mind goals, goals, goals guys, we need pacey, flexible players! He fits the bill

Did you see the effect OberToon had when he came on with that burst of pace? Ba looked useless without the pace around him and someone that could play a good pass.

Shola’s 1st touch Saturday was class, second touch shocking.

£8 million is a lot though, similar to what we were looking at Bendtner for?

@ 12 Woah seems like a good purchase although 8m euro seems a bit much for me. I wish we could get Sturridge in but I do fear he is going on loan somewhere again… I think the next two weeks will be very active.

Hope we get a LB in by the weekend. i really dont mind who it is asdlong as he is a left back and is a decent replacement for enrique.

Striker-wise, we need a little pacy striker who makes good runs.

Peter Odemwingie would be a good shout, might cost a bit but he had a mint 1st season last year.

Says his market value is around £5.3 million. Not bad stats but I dont know anything of him. If Carr thinks he is worth it then he must be. In Carr we trust.

To be honest after seeing Shola and Ba at the weekend I think Shane Long would have been an improvement. That lad does a lot of running, I’m not a fan of players who have a lethargic style of play despite their quality. I prefer counter attacking football with quick players.

there are alot of his goals there. I think he’s very similar to Ba. Good on his feet and also in the air. Would be a decent signing.

15 in 36 looks a decent return, not going to get a decent striker for much less than 7/8 million.

    Is ober martins available…….?!?!

Cup of nations time will be a trying time for us, Ba, Tiote, maybe Strolla, and if we get him then this fella too

The new striker is probably the most critical signing we need to make. He needs to be a Bellamy type player – quick, nimble, able to play off a big forward (We have loads of them already). A proper “poacher” who can pick up the rebounds and the “nod-ons” from the target man. Yet also able to make his own space and score.

Who is he? Where is he? We need him pdq!!!

    @ 37 – Bang on as I think.

Never mind an out and out number 9.

Even if we had a Carroll type striker, we’d still need one of these quicker lads in to support him.
