Reports in Paris today are suggesting Newcastle are set to move for Lyon defender Aly Cissokho.
Aly Cissokho – capped last year by France
Newcastle are in the hunt for a new left back to replace Jose Enrique, after he finally left for Liverpool last Friday.
And although Erik Pieters of PSV seems to be the number one choice, Newcastle will have other top left backs lined up just in case that deal cannot be struck, for whatever reason.
The Newcastle Journal suggested yesterday there were difficulties with both the fee PSV wanted and even some trouble on terms with the Pieters potential transfer, but we have no idea if there is any truth in that specific report.
The 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from Lyon all this summer, and even Liverpool expressed an interest in him, before they signed Enrique last week.
The reports in Paris are that Newcastle are lining up an £8M offer for the 5’11” Cissokho, and the player is very keen to play in England.
And of course if the left-back is signed this week, he would become the club’s fifth French signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Sylvain Marveaux, Yohan Cabaye, Mehdi Abeid and Gabriel Obertan.
And it would really be six, because Ba was born and brought up in France, although he plays for Senegal at International level.
Cissokho never played for any of the French Youth sides, probably because he was playing in France’s second division with Gueugnon, and he was going to play for Senegal at full International level, but was called up by France last August.
He finally made his French debut in the friendly game against Norway on August 11th of last year, and played the whole game at left back.
He moved to Lyon from Porto in 2009, and has played 75 times for the French club with two goals, and played 23 times at Porto in the one season he was in Portugal.
We suspect PSV’s Erik Pieters is still Newcastle’s number one target, but if problems arise with that deal, maybe Cissokho is next in line.
Comments welcome.

Comment #16Sold from Porto for 15m euro, and performed well for Lyon. Can’t see why the price should suddenly be 8m quid, but fine with me!

Comment #19No chance he’s going to be that cheap guys come on!
He was bought for £15 million with a sell on clause in his contract, he will NOT be leaving for that little and I sincerely doubt it will be for us!

Still think he would be a class signing for us though.

Comment #30Stuart – doesn’t it seem bizarre that Pardew basically says we can’t afford 2 x good left backs at the club. Makes no sense to me.

Comment #36Got a feeling that these stories are just more false bids and BS for us to swallow, Then we’ll get the old, “We tried to get them but they didn’t want to come.” Then their club will say we didn’t even bid for them in the first place. Not normally one to complain or be negative but this window has been tough for me at times and I really have no clue if we are trying to build a team capable of winning something or putting some players in the shop window for Mr Ashley to make some profit on them. Slightly disillusioned!

Comment #37Aye Neil, makes no sense. Maybe their arguement is they dont want a quality player on the bench all season picking up high wages.
But theres such a thing as squad rotation that I dont think MA has heard of haha.

Who does everyone think our next signing will be then? The Pieters deal could be done soon and judging by certain reports he seems a good replacement. I don’t play Championship Manager/claim to be an expert on Dutch football so don’t know enough about him!! lol
