West Ham Again Interested In Joey Barton

The Daily Mirror is reporting today that West Ham are again interested in Joey Barton.

Joey Barton – West Ham again interested

Newcastle have told the Liverpudlian he will not be offered a new contract on Tyneside.

After his behavior at the pre-season friendly at Leeds United, when he argued before the game with manager Alan Pardew because he was not captain for the day, and then gave a dressing room speech after the game berating the Newcastle players, Newcastle made him available on a free transfer the very next day.

The east London club are said to be monitoring the situation regarding the midfielder, but Joey has also said that unlike the former Newcastle captain Kevin Nolan, he would not take a step down in divisions and prefers to keep playing in the Premier League.

West Ham were slightly interested a couple of weeks ago,  when Newcastle first put the player up on a free transfer, and now they seem more interested in the player and are said to be waiting to see if if a top Premier club will make a move for the player in the two weeks still left in the transfer window.

One difficulty with Barton for any interested club, is that he is making around £65K/week at Newcastle, compared with what Kevin was making on Tyneside, which is just over £50K/week, but we don’t think Joey would be interested in moving down a division to West Ham.

West Ham still have former Newcastle midfielder Scott Parker at the club, and cannot afford the high wages of both Parker and Barton, but we think their biggest challenge will be persuading Barton to move to the Championship.

Stoke, Aston Villa, Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal have registered an interest in the former Newcastle midfielder but are put off by the £8M transfer fee,  for a player who turns 31 in October.

We’d be very surprised if Joey Barton moved to West Ham, but we are concerned that Newcastle may let one or two of their top players leave on August 31st, and then be short of players again, as famously happened last January.

At that time they let top striker Andy Carroll move to Liverpool on January 31st, but then didn’t have enough time to bring  in a replacement.

What do you think?

Am I the only one who feels a bit sorry for PArdew? I reckon he took the job on good faith, and is either a good liar, or genuinely believed he was getting players in…
he must feel like hes getting one in the bomb bay from his ‘good mate’

    Geoff

I just believe all Barton’s hard work fighting his deamons have been unoticed not everyone is perfect and the bloke is a damn good squad player, motivator and aggressor.

some times you need the latter in desperate times for example Arsenal last year…

Interesting that on skysports news just there, there was a link with Chelsea trying to put Kalou and Benayoun in a deal for Modric. Kalou wud be a good striker to go for. Fast, can score and is tested in the league, just what we need.

Come on Chairman, we need players in now.

    @Drongo

I also have some sympathy for Pardew. He’s trying to keep his paymaster and the supporters happy at the same time. And as those two parties are diametrically opposites, it aint easy.

Barton’s set pieces have been rubbish for a long time now. Like Nolan, since Carroll left, Barton is largely redundant if we are going to try and play fast football on the deck.

Barton will allways be a timebomb, if not this week, then not long after. Do we really need it all time and again ? Joey’s ego and the circus around him is detrimental to NUFC’s image. Fat Sham bought Barton and Smith to be boot boys in his long ball game.

Personally I would much rather see Obertan as a winger rather than Joey, Cabaye as a set piece taker over Barton and Fergy, Abeid and Vuksic at least on the bench. If barton stays he has to be in the middle not as a winger.

Ed, Joey turns 29 in September, so how does he manage to turn 31 in October?
He’s well worth a contract at SJP. He is ‘in recovery’ and should be treated with a degree of care his employers have failed to show. Yes he’s a so-and-so but he won us a point on Saturday and no denying it. Sign him up to an extension and bring him back into the fold and lets put this fiasco behind us.
