Are Newcastle Interested In Charlton Goalkeeper?

There are strange reports doing the rounds that 6’3″ Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot is about to join Newcastle United.

Rob Elliot – 25 year-old Charlton goalkeeper

Newcastle  just sent Fraser Forster out on loan to Celtic again, and now have Tim Krul and Steve Harper to take care of first team duties at Newcastle for this season.

Newcastle were linked with former Coventry goalkeeper Kieren Westwood in the summer, when he was a free agent, but Kieren signed for Sunderland, and and was on the bench at Liverpool last Saturday, as young Belgium goalkeeper Simon Mignolet was in goal for the Black Cats.

Alan Pardew said there was never any truth in the rumors that Newcastle were interested in Westwood, and has only recently said that Steve Harper has nothing to prove on Tyneside.

Newcastle desperately need a left back for Saturday, after Enrique left the club, and we need another another top striker too, so the news that we may be after a goalkeeper is strange indeed, if it is true.

Contract talks between 25 year-old Elliot and Charlton have stalled and the news down south is that he will link up with former Charlton manager Alan Pardew and former Addicks goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman on Tyneside.

Elliot was in goal on Tuesday night for Charlton in their good 2-0 win at Colchester United.

We were surprised on Tuesday evening when Fraser Forster was linked with another loan move to Celtic, but that move happened yesterday, so this may also be true, maybe.

One reason could be that Alan Pardew thinks he needs three goalkeepers as cover at Newcastle.

Elliot has been at Charlton since 2004, and has played over 100 times for the Addicks, and if he does move to Tyneside, there will be questions asked about what Steve Harper’s future will be at Newcastle.

Rob has one year left of his contract and would be available as a free agent next summer, and presumably for a small fee if he moves before September.

What do you think?

Why are we pursuing people in positions we don’t need? I suppose another keeper won’t hurt if Forster goes out on loan – although we have Soderberg?

Just speculation but how typical thta attention turns to a 3rd choice keeper when its been known for months that we would have to replace the LB and have a back up.The warning signs are worrying that we wont pay even reasonable fees for good players – MA thinks he can hard ball everybody just like in retail.Trouble with the take it or leave it attitude is that we usually end up with leave it. If the supposed LB targets(I use the word targets advisedly) are priced too highly for MA ‘s strategy, there is one question I would like the answer to – how the hell did we let Jose go for 4 or 5 mill below his worth in the current market?
I’ll believe we’ve signed someone when I see them on the pitch .

What’s the point in sending a keeper out on loan only to bring another in? If it’s a matter of Elliot’s wages being lower than Forster’s, why not just sell Forster and use the cash elsewhere?

I have to agree what the honest f@ck is going on right now. It just seems so sus this whole inability to get two players. There are hundreds of strikers on the market from price range 3-7 million and a lot of them are good but we seem to be dithering so so much. The game against arsenal was decent by defence but the attacked looked like nothing. Demba Ba and Ameobi are just not a partnership. They are both similiar players that play the same way. I feel if we don’t get another striker in if not two we will be sitting in relegation come the mid season transfer break. We need to sign a prolific striker that can run past defenders. We don’t have a striker that can run past defenders we need one.

The board need to realise that the price goes up the closer to the transfer window because demand is higher and desperation makes the players and agent ask for more money. (Evident under the signing of xisco 5.7mil and 50k a week) Under 2 weeks til the window slams shut. Hurry up and sign!!! Or x

Trent Toon awesome point mate now if only ASSLEY OR DEREK LAMEASS would read it and also act on it the world would be an awesome place.
My thoughts on a new keeper is a good thing as it looks like after the crappy trial games that FRASER FOSTER had it really shows he is not a good keeper at all.
So with Celtic loaning him with an option to buy for 2 million at the end of the season is good riddance i say.
Harper unfortunately he is a proud Geordie Veteran but i feel his best days are over and retirement is on the hoeizon.
Which in turn leaves KRUL who by far at the moment is our standout keeper for sure, but that means he may get comfortable with no one to challenge him.
So for me bringing in a new FIT and half decent keeper is a step in the right direction because as a stated before this will keep KRUL honest.
I predict a 1-1 draw same as last year this weekend against THE SCUM at the stadium of SHITE!

    HWTL!

    Makes sense.

Forster’s not happy on the bench.

Rob Elliot must be and he’s cheap.

Welcome to the city that lives and breathes for football, run by outsiders who do not have a clue.

How can a goalie of which the majority of Charlton fans who dont think his good enough to be number 1 in a league 1 side be offered a contract in the premiership with a club your size is beyond belief. Not sure what Pardews see’s in him but saying that were not sure what he saw in half the cack he brought for us. Hopefully he gives us a nice wedge for him too. Good luck Newcastle hope you stuff Sunderland on Saturday.

Aussiemag @ 11. Thats all well and good, but say Forster did leave, and even if Harper did retire, wd still have Ole Soderberg (“the next Swedish number 1”), as well as Jak Alnwick (“England U19 international) in reserve.

Ole Soderberg i reallly dont rank at all neither do i rank the Swedish team for the matter.

Jak Alnwick i agree however is not a bad young player but that said he will either be sold off early once he hits his stride and or he wont be used until he is 23 or 24 which is at least 4 years away

We need another keeper like we need a hole in the head!!

We DESPERATELY need a LB and have been waiting for a new No 9 for over 7 months – someone within the senior management needs to remove his head from his orifice and get this sorted out while we still can!!

The back end of the team is in good shape, the middle is spoilt for choice but the pointy end is stocked with donkeys!! I don’t mean to upset any donkey lovers by comparing them to Amiobi senior, it was a turn of phrase, honest!
