Steve Harper To Be Number Three Goalkeeper At Newcastle?

Steve Harper still has two years left on his contract,  but he could find himself as the Newcastle number three goalkeeper this season.

Steve Harper – doesn’t look good for Steve?

It’s expected that Newcastle will soon sign Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Rob Elliot, and they loaned out Fraser Forster for the season yesterday to Celtic, and we’d not be surprised if Foster signs on full time at the Glasgow club at the end of the season.

It seems that Tim Krul is now Newcastle’s number one goalkeeper, with presumably Rob Elliot the new back-up, if he arrives from Charlton Athletic.

We’re not sure what’s happened to Harper, since he’s still a very good goalkeeper, so we’re not sure what’s going on behind the scenes, that made Alan Pardew want to bring in another goalkeeper.

Harper is a top class professional and dedicated to Newcastle, for whom he’s made 191 appearances over the 18  years he’s been at the club.

Kevin Keegan signed Steve from Seaham Red Star back in 1993, and the news is that Steve has no plans of moving anywhere, and wants to remain at the Newcastle club.

So we’re not sure what’s going on with Harper and the likely arrival of Ron Elliot, but we think Alan Pardew should explain to the Newcastle fans, just what’s going on.

What do you think?

feel sorry for harps, he would of made a great england number 1, he is in the class of scholes and giggs in terms of his loyalty, although scholes and giggs play(ed) regularly and harps hasnt done, it is incredible that he has stuck around for so long when he could of been number 1 at just about any top flight club excluding probably only the top 4.

Foster’s deal is a loan with a permanent deal at the end.

I think Harps will be offered a coach role at the club.

Also. it sounds like Marv & Fergie will start on saturday.

If he had moved when Shay was here to a club where he started week in week out he would have been England’s No1.

Praise his loyalty, but question his ambition?!

Agree with you there mate, you have to question why exactly someone of his class wouldnt of moved. But he has always said that he had options to move but always wanted to be number 1 for newcastle since he was a boy. He has always been on good money as well so I suppose that has helped him lol.

Harps has been agreat pro for us but i do think its right that he is no longer no 1..
On the tranfer front, is it just me or is the fact that there just seems to be nothing happening(bar aGK) making this situation even worse???
No tweets, no rumours, no sightings, nothing.. Can someone make a rumour up just so i can get excited for a lil bit?? 🙂

I dont see how that outburst was passionate!?

We all feel the same mate, but clogging up the blog with it makes no difference!

MA gets far too much chatter on here, we should talk about the squad and the lads on the pitch, everytime we mention the fat man we are giving him recognition of some kind.

I fully Agree with Richy, People spend too much time on here slagging Ashley off and not enough time praising the lads that are doing well and getting behind the team. ST James’ was a ghost at the arsenal game compared to how much it normally rocks and if we cant get the stadium of shite rocking then i worry for us and the future of the club. The players and the team are vital but it’s the fans that have always made us stand out against other clubs lest us not forget that.

It’s good that we’re going for the younger players, but getting rid of Harper or push him down the pecking order is just wrong imo.
He’d still a competative player to Krul ffs, and Sodeberg is getting better by the day, why not have him as a 3rd keeper?
    It’s just odd imo.
I take it Forster is likely to become a celtic player next summer then. I get it, partly, but i find it odd and unnecessary.

    @carl

I have heard from someone whose sister cleans the dishes in the kitchens at a sports direct store, that messi left the supercup last night and specifically demanded a 20k a week contract at newcastle. He reportedly said “The opportunity to work work with such a distinguished manager, alan pardew and reliable, honest board, MA and DL, is too much for me to turn down”

but dont shoot the messenger, Im just saying what I was told.

What a laughing stock we will be if we end the transfer window without a proven LB, which is equally good or better than Enrique.
Newcastle United, doesn’t have a natural LB.
    I just wanna cut myself.
Trying to stay positive is really putting a MASSIVE strain on my nuts.

Poor ‘aul harps… sits on the bench for 13 years no worries not a peep and when asked performs really well and assured – then gets knocked out after 2 years of a chance. He is someone we should keep at the club defo as he speaks very well to the media and can be a real asset as a coach. We love ya Harps… G’Luck – Cup matches for you this year maybe?

dmac, the reason why we dont tend to praise the guys on the pitch is….. well… did you watch the match on saturday. Imagine that had been Man City in form like they were on monday. We appreciate that the lads are doing the best they can but its hardly awe inspiring.

the reason why we always end up slagging ashley off or whinging about him is because he lies to us time and time again, and his purse strings are tight shut. Beginning of the transfer window I thought, all he has to do is spend SOME money and has he? has he heckers

@drongo i dont think the current team would beat the old team PURELY because they havent had as much time to gel as a side and learn how each other works. If they were both given the same amount of playing time together then i truly think the new team would beat them.

Richy… typical English attitude, if you’ve got a problem then shove it under the carpet and never talk about it. :S

Ofcourse we need to give him recognition he is the owner of our football club and he does make the decisions and controls our future.

Drongo, a think it could beat the old team like our squad has new better players but we jus need another couple in obvious positions..shame benny isnt fit cos he would destroy sunderlands weak backline

Also wish people would stop it with the Fergie for left back, hes not strong enough and is a class left winger

I agree with you Burni mate i genuinely think had Ashley had spent money in this window he would have won over a lot of the neggers. That being said he hasnt and we must move on, People moan about the image this club seems to have in both the press and other peoples opinions but at times it cant be helped by the negative attitude of alot of the fans.

Everton have spent absolutely nothing and signed no-one in this transfer window yet the fans arent negative and the overall level of negativity in there forums is low. Why can’t our fans be FANS a supporter of the club and not a doom and gloom monger.

This seems like very harsh treatment of one of our most loyal players. I don’t get it.

The competition between Harps and Krul for the number one spot has been great . Also I feel Forster has a lot of talent and is one for the future, and we always have a decent young keeper developing in the form of Soderburg. Why we have to throw Elliot into the picture is beyond me.

I’d rather have kept Forster (though I’m not against loaning him out) than signed a league one keeper. Is this guy really better than Harps? I doubt it.

Hopefully he’ll stay on as a squad player and a future keeper coach but I think this is shoddy treatment.
