We mentioned yesterday that Joey Barton will be a marked man in tomorrow’s game at Sunderland.
Joey Barton – marked man tomorrow
And the Sunderland players will try to provoke Joey, and maybe Lee Cattermole more than most.
Cattermole was the player who broke Barton’s foot in the game against Wigan back on 15th November, 2008, when he made a ridiculous late challenge on Joey after just 15 minutes of that home game, that left Barton in a heap.
Steve Bruce was Wigan manager at the time, and why Lee wasn’t sent off we have no idea.
But Newcastle subsequently missed Joey’s services until the Liverpool game on 3rd May, when of course Alan Shearer was in charge of the team, and Joey managed to get himself sent off, and missed the last three vital games of the relegation season.
We have always thought Cattermole was a dangerous player, who makes late and often dangerous tackles, to make up for his lack of pace, so watch out for Lee tackling Joey tomorrow, early in the game.
Alan Pardew says Joey knows he will be a target tomorrow:
“I don’t need to tell Joey what will happen,” “Joey will tell me probably. Today, maybe tomorrow, tomorrow evening and Saturday – he’ll tell me ‘they’ll target me today, gaffer’.”
“And I mean that in the nicest possible way, I might add.” “I’m sure Cattermole will be saying the same for them. He’s a fiery character. Him and Joey are going to be in the same sort of area and it’ll be a feature of the game.”
And it’s been a nice change this week that Joey has not been making too many headlines with that Twitter account of his, and we have to hope that continues.
It turns out that Alan has been talking to Joey this week, and they have been positive discussions about that Twitter account of his.
There’s been no ban on Joey Barton using Twitter, but we understand he’s not supposed to tweet about anything related to Newcastle United.
Alan continued:
“Me and him have had a lot of conversations about Twitter and his profile and everything else and I think he now understands that the best answer he can give is with his performances on the pitch,”
“I think he did that. That one incident that happened got highlighted, but his performance was very good and one of the best on the pitch, for either team.”
“He understands that. This week, as you’ll have seen, he’s been a lot quieter on there and I think both he and us are better for that.”
“It’s not just about Joey, it’s about Newcastle United. All the fans who really love Joey love him because he’s a footballer.”
“In today’s society, I can’t tell Joey to shut up, just like I wouldn’t tell any of you to shut up in your private life.” “You are your own person. All I can give him is my advice and my guidance and I have definitely given him that.”
Joey Barton will be a key player for Newcastle tomorrow, and we’d love to see another display like he turned in against Arsenal in the second half, but without the controversy, when he dragged Gervinho up off the pitch by his collar.
It’s a good chance tomorrow for Joey to show he has control of himself on the pitch again, and if he can do both things tomorrow, control himself and play well, then Newcastle could win the game.

Comment #42Ha ha Wenger getting spanked again by UEFA for sending messages to the bench on Tuesday.
P.I. just dont take them until Sunday as the Beer will dull the pain mate 🙂
Andy was really surprised with Bartons set piece’s, they were all very poor, Pardew has to give them to Cabaye as they will be vital this weekend

Jonas has never played on the right for us, Majorca, Veles Sazfild or Argentina. He has played at right back for his country and as a striker for Majorca but never on the right of midfield.
The odd game here or there for us maybe, but he has always been a left sided midfielder

Comment #45@41 – Yeah, whilst Carroll was here and when we had a target man.
He’s seemed less effective as he is out of position with nothing to aim for perhaps?

Maybe but set pieces are mainly aim for the big man or shoot…..why will Cabaye be better at hitting a none existant target man?

I just thought he ran really fast at two players the shimmied in between them brilliantly and then did something useless with the ball. Who cares where he plays, run forest run!
