Newcastle again came out on top at Sunderland today, when they were second best in the first half, but a great Ryan Taylor free-kick after 63 minutes, curled into the top left hand corner for a wonderful goal, and it was enough to give the Magpies all 3 points.
The game kicked off with Newcastle in white shorts with their famous black and white stripes, and Sunderland were in black shorts with their red and white stripes.
Sunderland got off to a fast start and threatened the Newcastle goal almost immediately, and Jack Colback made a good run down the left wing and his cross went right across the goal with no Sunderland player there to tap the ball home – that was a good chance for Sunderland after 8 minutes.
The almost immediately Sessegnon, who was looking good in midfield, hit a good shot that Tim Krul saves well to his left.
It was again Sessegnon after 10 minutes, who had a good shot that was only just wide of Krul’s left hand post.
And after 12 minutes it had been all Sunderland, but then on 15 minutes it seemed that Larsson handled the ball on the goal line following a corner.
Newcastle were screaming for both a penalty and a red card and referee Howard Webb consulted with his linesman but disallowed the Newcastle appeals.
That was a huge call in Sunderland’s favor by the referee, and it was judged to have been accidental; hand ball – yeah right.
Then on 23 minutes, from a Cabaye corner, captain Coloccini had a free header but put the ball wide of Mignolet’s left hand post.
On 23 minutes Krul made another good save and the Dutch goalkeeper looked in excellent form, and than Cabaye was just a little lucky to get away with a dangerous foul on Bardsley.
Yohan got a yellow card, but it could have been red, since his studs were showing as he lunged in at the former Manchester United man.
On 26 minutes a good Seb Larsson corner found Ghana International striker Gyan completely unmarked, but he headed the ball wide, and missed a good chance.
Newcastle were starting to come more into the game and after 32 minutes Ferdinand backed off Yohan Cabaye, who took the shot from 25 yards out, and Mignolet made an excellent save – that was poor defending from Ferdinand.
On 33 minutes Mignolet plucked a cross out of the air, when he was surrounded by both Sunderland and Newcastle players, and then Ryan Taylor received a yellow card.
Tim Krul then made another terrific save when he turned a Sessegnon shot around the post – a wonderful save from the young Newcastle goalkeeper, to keep the score level.
Then on 43 minutes a long cross found Shola Ameobi about three yards from goal, but Shola headed just wide.
As the game evened out a little, the referee blew for half time, but there was little doubt that Sunderland had been the better side in the first half, but hadn’t taken any of their chances.
Tim Krul had made several fine saves for Newcastle.
There were no changes made for the second half.
Cheick Tiote was getting closer and closer to a yellow card, and the Ivorian was testing referee Howard Webb with some of his tackling, as Tiote tried to get a grip on the center of midfield.
The first 10 minutes of the second half were fairly even as Newcastle came back into the game, but like last week, Newcastle seemed to have very little cutting edge up front.
On 59 minutes Gyan went down in the penalty area, and Sunderland appealed for a penalty, but the referee waved play on – it was nowhere near a penalty.
With 30 minutes go it was still anybody’s game with Sunderland looking more polished than Newcastle.
And then on 62 minutes Gutierrez broke through and hit a decent shot which Mignolet saved easily.
Then from a free kick out on the left, Newcastle went ahead when Ryan Taylor put in a great free kick that swerved and sailed into the top left hand corner of the net, as Mignolet missed the cross come shot.
Another goal from a Newcastle set play, and Ryan again showed what a great squad player he can be for Newcastle.
Newcastle were ahead probably against the run of play – but who cared?
On 66 minutes Cattermole made one of those stupid – over the top tackles of his – this time on Gutierrez and the Argentine rolled on the pitch in agony after the tackle.
Lee only got a yellow card and Newcastle had a free kick eight yards outside the area.
Before the free kick could be taken, both Joey Barton and Phil Bardsley got yellow cards from the referee, and Ryan Taylor then put the free kick way over the bar.
Newcastle had gained confidence from the goal, and were surging forward trying to get a second goal that could have wrapped up the game.
On 73 minutes a good cross from the right was well taken by Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul, who looked very good today in the Newcastle goal.
Sunderland were coming forwrd all the time to try to get the equalizer and on 83 minutes Gyan should have done better when he hit his shot wide of Tim Krul’s left hand post.
On 85 minutes Newcastle brought on Williamson for Cabaye as Pardew tried to tighten up the Newcastle defense and get a famous victorty.
Then Dan Gosling was brought on as Newcastle looked for fresh legs to protect their lead.
Phil Bardsley committed a dangerous tackle on Colcocini and the refree rightly sent off the full back.
Newcastle held out, unlike in the same hame in January and our boys did us proud today, with all three points.
While Newcastle were second best in the first half, they again showed a resilience and have yet to concede a goal this season.
A fantastic win by our boys today, when we needed it most, and now we can gloat – again!
A note to Mike Ashley – sign those players up next week – PLEASE!
Bottom line – a great win for Newcastle today.
Howay The Lads!!

Comment #43Nearly every challenge had contact on it. Especially Bardsley on Colo, and Clattermole on Gutti.
Richardson, softest touch ever and he falls down in the box. Albeit he did not ask for a penalty. But still that was the softest challenge in the game.

Comment #45I just loved the fact cabaye was in the faces of all the mackems today. Was right in there sticking up for his team mates at any time. Was really good to see as i had doubts if he would have the nuts to get into it like that. Knew he was a good player but that side of the game is just as important these days

Anyone fancy a medium home shirt with BEN ARFA on the back. Bought the wrong size, selling it for cheaper than inpaid for it.

Comment #47It’s no coincidence since Cabaye left Lille they have lost the Super Cup game and failed to win their opening 2 in the league.. forget Gervinho and Rami he was their main man that made things tick. Now he looks fantastic for us, excellent today what a bargain…and to think Liverpool paid 15m+ for Henderson ha ha ha

Comment #48Arsenal have had a worse pre-season in terms of their squad in my opinion. Plagued with key injuries, Two of their best players want out. Havent solved their CB problem, No Experienced Left back, and now 2 3 game suspensions.
Song and Gervinhoe to miss tonights game, 2nd game @ udinese(i think) and against Manure.

Comment #56Can’t wait for Joey’s twitter. Not that I do that business, you understand, but I’m sure it’ll be repeated on here.
I hope Pardew grows some balls and insists Barton gets an extension to his contract. I know it’s a cliche but he really is the “heartbeat” of the team.
Personally I think our whole season balances on Joey staying or going. I hope they do the right thing.

Comment #57Very clever game by Pardew. He looked very calm and i control of events.
Should have had a penalty and a red card for Larsson in 1st half which would have changed the game but we got the win any how…
Tioté is not in top form but will get there with more games. Cabaye will need more games to adjust but seems like a true warrior with a good shot. The Argies performed superb. Only downside was the attackers. Obertan really needs to fight more. He seems to lack a bit of confidence, not trying to go past his opponent.. Willl get better with more games though.
All in all a wonderful day!

Comment #58Colo and woodgate are the two best CBs newcastle have seen for a pretty long time quality.
Steven taylor used to have a lot problems in that his positioning used to be poor and also he would get drawn to the ball. He has been quality since he came back from injury last season and is looking like the new John Terry he was once mentioned to be.

A very difficult game. The team have shown his qualities for fighting, but the paly is disastrous.
It was some good moves in the second half, but if the team can’t hold the ball better than that, she can’t pretend to nothing.
The defense was good, but only for defensive matters. She was disastrous for the first use of the ball (in France, we say “la relance”, how did you say that in english?).
A real problem of forward. A real problem of LB. Raylor is the hero of the day, he’s work well in defense, but he bring nothing beyond the middle line.
And some individual faillures. Tiote and Obertan especialy.
So, i repeat, for me, the team will improve in play, but this is a long road, so stay quiet.
Well, not too much, a NUFC’s fan got the right to celebrate after a victory against Sunderland!

Comment #66I feel like such an idiot. Forgot to check the time of the game and missed it 🙁 At least we won, but usually the games are later then today.
But, I did read 90% of the 400+ comments about the game and it was almost like watching it.
What can I say – sounds like we were again playing long balls tactic. Didn’t had any attack.
The goal which was good I guess, came from a free kick and not an attack, so still nothing from us.
The defence was good I guess.
Tiote was bad, hope he will get better, we need his qualities from last year.
In the end, we maybe are good in defence which is great, but you win when you score. Hope we will get that sorted because it will be a very frustrating season if we will not attack and create chances.
Good luck to us this season, a bit afraid we will not get anyone in (at least not anyone good enough).

Comment #74Great result, excellent start to the season.
Defense looking solid (not many times I’ve been able to say that over the years!) and Krul very good.
Krul, Guti, Ameobi and both CB’s came through for us today.

Obe and the new players (like Ameobi hhh…) need more time. Cabaye will be good, hopefully also Ba, and Obe defo will be great. But if Cabaye was good, Obe was not, this is their first derby, cannot expect everyone to be 100%, specially not in Newcaslte as we know it.
Just give them time, they are our players and they are good players.
What I am more worried about is out tactics and our trasfers.
If we continue with these long balls, we should just play 5-1-4, at least this way we have better chance of winning the ball with 4 in attack (joking of course).
We are not using our midfield as it should be used, always giving the ball away. Last season, against Arsenal, and as I understood from the comments about this game.
