Newcastle manager Alan Pardew watched PSV Eindhoven left-back Erik Pieters again on Sunday afternoon.
Erik Pieters – Newcastle op choice again
And the significance of that is that the £6M rated 23-year-old left-back was the best player on the field, as the Eindhoven side beat Ado Den Haag 3-0 away.
The news last week from the local press in Newcastle, was that the club had switched their attentions to Aly Cissokho of Lyon, after the talks with both PSV on the fee and Pieters himself on the terms, seemed to break down.
But Pardew’s attendance at the game would suggest the club are still interested in the Dutch International, and after the game, this is what Pieters said:
“I’m open to this step, it seems a great challenge.” “But if it fails, I am not disappointed. My agent must report to me when it is really concrete. I have not heard yet, so I wait.”
There are now just 9 days left in the transfer market for Newcastle still to make two major signings, a left back and a striker.
So it seems it’s between Lyon’s Aly Cissokho and Erik Pieters, with Erik seemingly the cheaper option, since Cissokho is valued at anywhere between £8M and £10M.
But the last we heard on the Pieters deal both the fee and the wages being demanded by Pieters (£32K/week) were more than Newcastle were willing to pay.
After the great win at Sunderland on Saturday, we’ll have to see if that’s changed the minds of the powers that be at the club.
We hope so, and it would be great to get a top left-back to the club this week.
And it seems that striker Modibo Maiga is still Newcastle’s other top target, and he held talks with the Souchaux President related to his move over the weekend.
We expect either Pieters or Cissokho to be brought in this week, but we’d be surprised if Newcastle can bring in Maiga, who was in great demand by some top clubs, including Manchester United, only last June.
