Is Erik Pieters Newcastle’s Choice Again To Replace Enrique?

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew watched PSV Eindhoven left-back Erik Pieters again on Sunday afternoon.

Erik Pieters – Newcastle op choice again

And the significance of that is that the £6M rated 23-year-old left-back was the best player on the field, as the Eindhoven side beat Ado Den Haag 3-0 away.

The news last week from the local press in Newcastle, was that the club had switched their attentions to Aly Cissokho of Lyon, after the talks with both PSV on the fee and Pieters himself on the terms,  seemed to break down.

But Pardew’s attendance at the game would suggest the club are still interested in the Dutch International, and after the game,  this is what Pieters said:

“I’m open to this step, it seems a great challenge.” “But if it fails, I am not disappointed. My agent must report to me when it is really concrete. I have not heard yet, so I wait.”

There are now just 9 days left in the transfer market for Newcastle still to make two major signings, a left back and a striker.

So it seems it’s between Lyon’s Aly Cissokho and Erik Pieters, with Erik seemingly the cheaper option, since Cissokho is valued at anywhere between £8M and £10M.

But the last we heard on the Pieters deal both the fee and the wages being demanded by Pieters (£32K/week) were more than Newcastle were willing to pay.

After the great win at Sunderland on Saturday, we’ll have to see if that’s changed the minds of the powers that be at the club.

We hope so,  and it would be great to get a top left-back to the club this week.

And it seems that striker Modibo Maiga is still Newcastle’s other  top target,  and he held talks with the Souchaux President related to his move over the weekend.

We expect either Pieters or Cissokho to be brought in this week, but we’d be surprised if Newcastle can bring in Maiga, who was in great demand by some top clubs, including Manchester United, only  last June.

What do you think?

Come on pardew, have the confidence to tell Ashley that you want him. Ashley can’t exactly criticise the amount of money pardew has spent. Nine days to go, it’s not long. We need a left back and striker in now.

Mertens was the player of the game I rex but Pieters looked a solid player and had a good game too. Looks to have good balance, can defend very well and had a few positive forward runs. Come on Ashley man, sign him or Aly up.

Don’t understand the NUFC logic on this.

If you are trying to improve, as a club, then you have to replace what you had with the best player available within your budget.

Both the players are as good as, if not better than Jose and either is well within our available budget – even free transfers and plumbing don’t eat £40 million!!!!

BUT dont forget the new number 9 we have been waiting for since January – only 7 months ffs!!!!

Longer thsi goes on, less time to integrate before the weekend clash…

Not cool. Why let Jose go and then not get a rplacement in for 2 weeks?!

Ironically, Raylor’s performance on Saturday was pretty solid after the earlier exposure, massive well played to him.

AGAIN he has showed his value to the squad like he did in the cups last season AND the league and I think people overlook his value to us.

hahaha. How many weeks have we heard this line…

We expect either Pieters or Cissokho to be brought in this week

And why would we buy Maiga? he is shite, i have seen him play a couple of times. even Xisco is better then him!!

What a strange comment. Man united were also tracking Maiga. I think you need to see someone play at least half a dozen times, that’s why we have Carr. Quite an improvement on youtube.

Read somewhere that the only reason we have not signed him yet is that AP needed to see him first. Therefore, we should be seeing this lad at SJP this week. Shouldn’t we?

Heard this a fair few times like, starting to run out of time to get people through the door, only 9 days to go and it seems so long since our last signing.

In an ideal world we’d get a LB, RB, CB and a striker before the window closes, couldnt care less how much they cost aslong as they’re good.

We’ll be lucky if we get the LB and Striker though lol.

Hopefully this will be resolved this week but dont just want anyone as some seem to want, got to be the right player, if this means it takes until the 31st then so be it.

On another note been very impressed by Cabaye so far, not for his ability on ball, but him tenacity and bite, seems to work hard for team and is always there backing players up when someone fouls them, does not hide like a lot of foreigners.

yeah I was impressed with that as well
was right there having a pop at cattermole after the gutierrez challenge
and some of his passes just look sheer quality, especially when you consider he’s not even fully settled!

Apart from the great win and three points, for me the most uplifting moment was Cabaye getting really stuck in. Great signing.

I was worried that we’d lack the fight we had last season.
    Not anymore.

We’re linked with two very good left backs, both seem keen on the move. We also have a good young forward begging for a move here, it’s a good situation to be in as long as we take advantage of it.

There’s just over a week left now for deals to be completed, i hope we manage to fill those two positions, if we do we should be in for a very good season.

Think once they settle together Tiote and Cabaye will be a great partnership, hopefully they will be the platform to allow Ben Arfa to play from, also think Jonas will start to excel, his workrate is second to none and commits defenders time after time.
And in defence, do we really need to worry that much when El Capitan is in there? Fu$*ing immense.

Watched the PSV game on ESPN last night and Pieters looks the business. I know its only one game but a full dutch 7 capped international cant be bad, if hes meant to be the successer to Van Bronckhorst. Clearly Cissokho is the prefered choice for many, including me, i’d be suprised if we got him.

Like the look of the overall squad. Clearly we are goin to spend 15-20M on a left back and a striker. Hope we can get and extra 5M for some much needed cover at the back, other than a new LB.
Someone in the Aaron Hughes mould, but not Aaron Hughes! Simpson is are only proper right back and we need cover in the middle. Nedum Onouha would be my shout, or Alan Hutton.

Also, anyone been on that SMB Mackem forum, mate told me about it went on last night to see there reaction. You should see some of the excuses there ridiculous. Full of threads with 40 or 50 mackems claiming Larrson shouldnt have been sent off because the hand ball was ‘accidental’. Give me a break. And didnt relise there Jack Colback is a geordie and supports The Toon!

Oh and on that SMB Forum theres a thread called ‘Mags problem LB position’ or something. They all say that Ryan Taylor is shit and would be our weakness and they should target him haha. This is before the game. One person mentions hes good at freekicks and imediently is told ‘He only scores against Newcastle, dont worry’. Then after the goal someone comments ‘Yeah……. Not very good like’ hahahaha

yeah Iv gotta agree I was very pleasantly suprised at how up for it Cabaye was nd how he got stuck right in. Think him, Tiote nd Barton could be a cracking midfield trio if we continue with the 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation

Pay for Pieters! He’s an excellent option at left back and brings just as much skill and excitement as Enrique. A Dutch friend of mine says so, anyway…

i was really pleased to see cabay playing with similar mettle to a certain Joey barton without being gobby and by all accounts hes rally trying to learn the language too like irish mag says we have the opportunity to become a strong team with just those 2 signings + only team in top 4 divisions yet to concede a goal long may it continue if we land the LB before fulham i reckon we can take em coz apparently Rayls missus is expecting so he might need to be with her nd unable to play (fair enough really)

Clear from what Pards said about ‘getting Llambias and Ashley upstairs and deciding to get the transfer deals done’ that the impasse has only one source, and that is Fat Mike’s wallet.
C’mon fatboy, we aren’t talking 50 pints for punters in BluBambu, get your big chips out.
