Pardew To Ashley – Let’s Get These Guys Over The Line

Alan Pardew may have had a bit of a hangover on Sunday morning, but that didn’t stop him from flying to Holland to watch Newcastle target Erik Pieters in action at left-back for PSV Eindhoven.

Alan Pardew on Saturday

And news today in the Evening Chronicle (Lee Ryder) that chief scout Graham Carr, whom we did a piece on yesterday, was at Coventry City’s 0-0 draw with Watford, as he  assessed future prospects.

We wonder who they may be – any ideas?

PSV Eindhoven had a comfortable 3-0 win over Den Haag, and apparently Pieters had an excellent game, so maybe Alan can now convince the Newcastle hierarchy that Pieters is worth the around £30K/week he is said to be looking for.

Pardew was seen to be sitting next to Pieters’ agent Hakim Slimani during the game, so that may be good news.

Pardew talked to the local Newcastle press today:

“There has been talk of a left-back – we know about it, we are trying to secure one.”

“I can say to Derek Llambias and Mike Ashley, ‘let’s get these guys over the line.”

” It is not easy. but we will try to do that this week.”

Newcastle finally signing Erik Pieters this week would be great as far as we are concerned, and the Dutch International would be a top class replacement for the departed Jose Enrique.

But Newcastle must now move quickly to get the two top players they now need to round out the Magpies’ squad.

And it’s even looking a decent squad,  when you consider players who were not in the starting line-up on Saturday.

Ben Arfa, Dan Gosling, Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux, Mike Williamson, Danny Guthrie, Steve Harper, Peter Lovenkrands, Leon Best, Haris Vuckic and Shane Ferguson were some of them.

They are very decent players to have in reserve.

What do you think?

I agree. I think Cabaye is doing alright but not as good as we all expect him to be. Both the games so far, he seems to drift in and out of game. I thought he’ll be making more penetrating runs from deep.

I thought Gosling did just that when he came on instead and almost scored. As it stands, i’d prefer Gosling in place of Cabaye, and see what Gosling can offer going forward.

NUFC being reported by two different clubs about going for players.

Then the ones who do want to come we won’t pay for…joke club with a manager I feel sorry for and who seems to be increasingly more openly complaining about the managrment

Am away back to my retirement from this blog

For the past 2 games i think Cabaye has been just anchoring the midfield. Doing the same with Tiote. He has been very good no denying it. I thought he was very impressive in holding the midfield against the scums.

Point is, he’s doing what Tiote is good at. I would like to see what Gosling can offer going forward, has i think his runs from deep are better than Cabaye. He almost scored.

So yes, i would like to see Cabaye and Gosling rotated, as i think Gosling could be a world class midfielder as well.

one thing i observed when reading the article, all the players you named who did nit start – only 1 defender (williamson)

i really think we could do with 2 LB’s and someone who can play at RB/CB

think neil taylor would have been great as a backup LB who plays in cups or to give pieters a rest after international duty etc

Ilovetoon, mate I think you’ re right about Cabeye going in and out, but mate it’s only game 2.. I like what he has shown so far..

The only way he will adapt is by playing games..

I remember people having a whinge about colli when he first signed, now look at him, possibly the best cb we have had for a while..

    Patience..

ilovetoon were you watching the sunderland game? Cabaye was definitley not in a holding role and if you think he was then i have no clue why. He was playing just in behind shola and at times was ahead of shola harrying defenders and chasing down nearly every ball.

It makes me laugh, AP said in an interview 5 weeks ago “I can’t understand people getting uneasy about Newcastle not getting the right players in, we’ve still got 5 weeks left of the transfer window.” Well we still need 2 very key players and that window is nearly slammed shut! £30.000 a week is a brilliant deal for a Dutch international, haway MA and DL pull your fingers out! Yes i’ll definitely start Gosling on thursday. The thing is i think we have a trio in midfield like Barca’s Busquet, Xavi and Iniesta. Tiote playing Busquet role.

But i think Cabaye is playing like a playmaker. He makes very few forward runs preferring to get the ball on his feet and making passes. But i think Gosling can play like Iniesta. He makes forward runs so intelligently and can cause defence problems.

Pardew is playing a formation that certainly suits playing Gosling in the middle. Because in both the games, we are having 3 midfielders doing the same thing. Barton, Tiote, Cabaye. All of them holding their own impressively in the centre. And it lacks dynamism.

I still fully expect Barton to leave in the next 10 days. So I can see a midfield three of Gosling, Tiote, Cabaye – at least until Benny returns. Just wish we’d get a striker in, or Ba would get some confidence/the ball haha.

Yes i watched the Sunderland game and Cabaye was certainly playing almost in a holding role with Tiote. You mention playing behind Shola. He wasn’t. He was closing players down high up the pitch. It’s not the same.

I believe Gosling will grow to be a better player than Cabaye. But i would like to see Tiote Cabaye Gosling in the same midfield dropping Barton.

Its like Busquet Xavi Iniesta in our midfield. Very dynamic and i believe Gosling intelligent runs will be handful for defences.

Tiote has being apalling, drop him if anyone (I actually wouldn’t, but if you’re picking players on form….?) Your point about anchoring doesn’t wash, yes he was defending, but on more than one occasion he was the furthest player forward, it’s called being a dynamic, genuine box-to-box player.

He offers the team so much, and we’re yet to see his passing and playmaking talents, because of the extraordinary circumstances in both the first two games.

I like Gosling too, I really want to see him start, maybe in a 5/3 (whichever way you look at it) man midfield, with him supporting attacks like you say.

In terms of ability, I think the midfielder who contributes the least is Barton, his passing is woeful at times, but his drive and grit is crucial.

I hope Barton doesn’t leave though. But i think Gosling was very impressive with his runs. He certainly is very intelligent in making those runs, with brilliant timing. But i would like to see those 3 in midfield. With Tiote and Cabaye holding and Gosling giving license to roam with HBA.

Could overload defences and loads of goals.

Cabaye was the furthest player forward, because he was closing people down. When we were attacking he made very few forward runs except ones or twice(the 1 where obertan laid the ball to him). That’s not box-to-box player. Cabaye still played very deep 3/4 of the time.

I agree with you on Barton though. He makes very little contribution but his grit can drive the whole team. And he tracks back alot to help the defence. I’d sacrifice him to play Gosling though.

As i think Gosling’s ability to make fantastic runs from deep can open up alot of space for our fowards to score.

Everyone be happy with Gosling in for Barton? I wouldnt be sure… he is a pacey skillful player but I think we need to have Joey in middle of park… him, Tiote and Cabaye were immense as Central partners… once Joey came into Middle we started to look brighter… Gosling could play on the right wing but I think we have faster wingers…

I think we’d be wasting Gosling on the right wing. As i think Gosling’s intelligence means we have a player who could be twice the player Barton and Cabaye is in the future.

If we nuture him right, he’s England number 1 midfielder in the near future. Same level as Wilshere.
