Alan Pardew may have had a bit of a hangover on Sunday morning, but that didn’t stop him from flying to Holland to watch Newcastle target Erik Pieters in action at left-back for PSV Eindhoven.
Alan Pardew on Saturday
And news today in the Evening Chronicle (Lee Ryder) that chief scout Graham Carr, whom we did a piece on yesterday, was at Coventry City’s 0-0 draw with Watford, as he assessed future prospects.
We wonder who they may be – any ideas?
PSV Eindhoven had a comfortable 3-0 win over Den Haag, and apparently Pieters had an excellent game, so maybe Alan can now convince the Newcastle hierarchy that Pieters is worth the around £30K/week he is said to be looking for.
Pardew was seen to be sitting next to Pieters’ agent Hakim Slimani during the game, so that may be good news.
Pardew talked to the local Newcastle press today:
“There has been talk of a left-back – we know about it, we are trying to secure one.”
“I can say to Derek Llambias and Mike Ashley, ‘let’s get these guys over the line.”
” It is not easy. but we will try to do that this week.”
Newcastle finally signing Erik Pieters this week would be great as far as we are concerned, and the Dutch International would be a top class replacement for the departed Jose Enrique.
But Newcastle must now move quickly to get the two top players they now need to round out the Magpies’ squad.
And it’s even looking a decent squad, when you consider players who were not in the starting line-up on Saturday.
Ben Arfa, Dan Gosling, Demba Ba, Sylvain Marveaux, Mike Williamson, Danny Guthrie, Steve Harper, Peter Lovenkrands, Leon Best, Haris Vuckic and Shane Ferguson were some of them.
They are very decent players to have in reserve.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #86Drop Cabaye for Gosling?? HAHA!!
Let me hear another joke these are quality….
I say we play Gosling against Scunny… He’s gona show how good he is and really make Pardew think about adding him into the first team… I understand Obertan hsn’t had much of a chance but I would sooner start Gosling nd then bring on Obertan as a power sub…. Goslings work rate is twice what Obertans is and thats what we need…
My team for Fulham would be…
———————————-KRUL———————————
SIMPSON——–SAYLOR———-COLLO———PIETERS!

MARVEAUX—————-VUCKIC—————-SAMEOBI
————————————–BA———————————

This is precisely the problem. You justify Cabaye’s inclusion because of his international reputation. I think the one player in our squad that has oustanding potential is Gosling. His pre-season form to now has never dropped.
He’s the only midfielder so far to show the ability of making very intelligent forward runs. I don’t know how, but i would like to see Gosling start. I would certainly keep an eye on him against Scunny.

Comment #89maynard is better than long anyways, from my experience watching the championship, he is just as fast, and better all round player. im just hoping we snap him up before another team worse than us (stoke, wba, fulham, wigan) come in for him and we regret it

That Gueye is a good player, a bit immature at times with his choices, but I wouldnt see him as a striking replacement for maiga?

Comment #96the reason Cabaye ‘isn’t as good as you thought’ is because he is still adapting, as is Marveaux and Abeid. Not just the game, but moving to another country/culture and learning a new language.

Not with the current crisis they are having at the moment.

Comment #104Nicky Maynard is a very good player who has scored goals for midtable teams. The only thing putting some of the fans on here off is because he plays in the championship. A lot of top players made a name for themselves in the championship before turning in to top players in the premier. Darren Bent and Tim Cahill to name a couple.

Maynard is a very god player, it doesnt matter if he is better than Maiga, the fact that his attributes are very different to Maigas means he would be a far better option for us, and personally, 6.5mill is a steal for me, if you would like me to compare a player to Maynard, he is currently a Championship version of Di Canio. Skillful and can score from anywhere, with the added bonus of electric speed as well, who knows if he wont adapt the the EPL, but at least give it a shot, he would compliment Ba, Best or Ameobi very well.

Think you brought up a point about Gosling and Vukic being the stand out players in pre-season and i completely agree.
I think Gosling is an exciting player we’ve got our hands on as although hes still young and raw he’s got loads of impressive aspects to his game.
Personally i want us to keep Barton and think it’s important that we do. We need players with his ability in our squad.
But i think Gosling will be a better player than Barton is in a couple of years time, and i would like to see him either rotate with Joey or get a good chance in the midfield this season.
Guthrie should be the man to move on this summer (if possible) as is clearly further down the pecking order.
Gosling can play in a 4 or 5 man midfield with Barton or without him. I’d like to see Pardew feed Gosling into games the way he has been, I think in a couple of years he could be a big big player for us.

Comment #111PSG: Erding announces his departure to spell
22/08/2011 – 12 h 51
Confined to the role of joker luxury Paris SG, Mevlut Erding (24 years) decided to leave. The Turkish international has himself reported today at the Camp des Loges. To the question “Will you be in training tomorrow? “The attacker said,” I do not think, “as relays RMC.
It remains now to find out where the former Sochaux, who apparently already emptied his locker, bounce. Stade Rennais appears on pole, but other courses are on the spot (Lille, Bordeaux, Saint-Etienne, Newcastle, etc.).
Hmm.. does that mean Madiga is on his way to us and Erding to Sochaux.. translated by Google from French site…
