Good news today – Newcastle’s Dan Gosling has been named in the England U21 squad.
Dan Gosling – called up by England U21 manager Stuart Pearce
This is the first time since Dan injured his ACL (knee) back in March of last year, that he’s been called up for the England U21 side. He played for the England U17, U18 and U19 sides and has so far got two caps at the England U21 level.
Stuart Pearce has named 12 new players in his 27-man England Under-21 squad for games with Azerbaijan and Israel in the next couple of weeks, as the England side attempt to get through to the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Finals in Israel.
Dan has looked good in pre-season, and he is now pushing to be a starter at Newcastle, and this has to give the 21 year-old a lot of confidence, after recovering from his very serious knee injury over the last sixteen months or so.
England face Azerbaijan in their opening Group 8 game at Watford on Thursday 1st September which has a 7:30 kick off, and then they play Israel in a friendly at Barnsley on Monday 5th September, with a 7:00 kick off time.
18 year-old Connor Wickham of Sunderland is also included in the squad.
This is what manager Stuart Pearce, the former Newcastle full-back said today, after he announced his squad:
“Our focus is going to have to be spot on from the offset because we’re in a qualifier straight away,”
“We really could be in the driving seat or alternatively it could be up in the air. I’ve got a feeling, looking at the sides in our group, that getting to the Finals will be difficult.”
“You’ve got the likes of Welbeck, who is a still an Under-21 player, around the senior squad; the likes of Henderson mentioned in squads, and Walker.
“There are a lot of players who have gone through the system and that is also what we’re trying to achieve, give them as much experience as we humanly can, at all the age groups.
“I’m very pleased that a lot of players are pushing through at both club and country level.”
We expect Dan to get a start against Scunthorpe United tomorrow night in the second round of the Carling Cup, and this is terrific news for the Newcastle youngster.
Here’s the full England U21 Squad:
Goalkeepers: Ben Amos (Manchester United), Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Declan Rudd (Norwich City).
Defenders: Nathan Baker (Aston Villa), Joe Bennett (Middlesbrough), Matthew Briggs (Fulham), Steven Caulker (Swansea City, loan from Tottenham), Craig Dawson (West Bromwich Albion), John Flanagan (Liverpool), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Martin Kelly (Liverpool), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur), Andre Wisdom (Liverpool).
Midfielders: Ross Barkley (Everton), Dan Gosling (Newcastle United), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Emmanuel Frimpong (Arsenal), Henri Lansbury (Arsenal), Josh McEachran (Chelsea), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Jack Rodwell (Everton), Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool).
Forwards: Nathan Delfouneso (Aston Villa), Marvin Sordell (Watford), Martyn Waghorn (Leicester City), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United), Connor Wickham (Sunderland).

Comment #42Barton epitomize the passion and commitment that players should have nowadays
So with him leaving now, will our “team spirit” get us through again?

Comment #43But we always have our hope on the players playing on the field. We have to, anyway, because we can’t trust the owner.

Comment #44Fenerbache have being kicked out the CL! Haha. UEFA to announce the replacement at 7.30 apparently! Not sure which method they use to select, some people reckon Arsenal will fill the void, as the highest ranked team, not to be automatically be in the tournament! Whacky 😆

Comment #51Sad sad day if JB signs for mincers park
Firstly because we lose a player who never gives up and can push a team forwards.
Secondly because by signing a contract with QPR hes showing just marginally more ambition than Nolan, and I thought he was better than that.
If JB stayed he would still be on a free next summer, mincers park would prob go down, and his mates at Jazz Mag FC would probably have been promoted and he could go there with his head held high all round.

Comment #52WWJBD, as with the Barton dressing room bust up. Paper talk. No one knows if Pardew does have gambling debts to Ashley. Although Pardew has said in an interview. That he had no contact with Ashley till he was offered the job.
In the Sunderland game yesterday Wickham was put on as a sub. He had a chance at goal but kicked well over. He is now known as High Wickham.

True true but I am just defending Pardew before he is blamed….I really dont think he has much room to wiggle in terms of the transfer goings on and he always looks heart broken in interviews after things like this happen

Barton not doing himself any favours with these contract Tweets. There was a contract offer Joey – you refused to sign it. Simple.

Comment #58Barton having medical at QPR. The Gambler wants him out – end of. No more players will mess with the heirarchy at SJP now – he’s ruthless. Let’s just hope this balances the wage bill so Pieters and maybe Maiga can be signed quickly.

Comment #59Im guessing the ‘negger’ camp will be swelled after JB deprture and the ‘real’ probability of yet another host of excuses for not following up transfers – even though some of the players wanted to come.
But still 50K turn out on Saturday to cheer ‘the team’/ Dont know why we are a laughing stock!

Comment #60Loosing Carroll Then Nolan Then Jose then Joey Barton our 4 Best Players is a Quality Cock up. Who will we get ??? No One !!!! Fat Mike wont spend the money on quality players that we need !!!! If he was going to get them we would have Pieters and a Quality Striker in 2 months ago !!!! Next to Go Will be Tiote !!!!!!

Comment #63Bartoon gets the security of a Contract that he doesn’t have today. He will have a release clause in his contract if (WHEN) QPR go down, which effectively gives him a “free” in 12 months time.
If he gets a pay rise to join, he’s better off all round, so who can blame him for joining. FCB via Lambsarse has made it clear Joey is not welcome at SJP despite Pardwho’s desire to keep Joey here – lets be honest, Pardwho has no more sway at Sid James’ than you or I do!!

Comment #64Lee Dodd what are you smoking Carroll, Nolan, Enrique & Barton our 4 best players?. 1 Carroll the fee was to big to turn down & he isn’t exactly setting the world alight at Liverpool, 2. Nolan wouldn’t get a game in the current midfield, 3. Enrique hasn’t wanted to play since January and didn’t play well in the last few games, 4. Barton has had 1 decent season out of four and he is nothing but trouble.

Comment #65Geordiedoonsooth – Agree with your comments apart from Enrique who should never have been allowed to leave.
Anyway those four were’nt our best players as Colo is and Jonas not far behind.

Comment #66Didn’t we go through all this when he twattered a few weeks ago, was fined, put on transfer list as a free blah blah blah? Did you really think he would see out his year when the cash register started ringing in his ears. So long JB, it’s been a roller-coaster! Was very unhappy when you came, deeply unhappy when you committed another offence whilst a Toon player (wanted us to sack you when you were in prison but we stuck by you) and haven’t appreciated the big (electronic?) mouth. Did appreciate the efforts last year – for which you have been paid handsomely. Ta ta .

Comment #67Tell you what Then How about 4 Alan Smiths and 3 James Perches Then ??? Is Ba and Shola Better Than Andy Carroll ??? Who have we to control the Midfield now Then ?? Yes Coloccini is Awsome . Ryan Taylor is ok But Not a Quality Left Back !!! We cant keep selling and Not replacing players and hope to get the best from free transfers !!!! This Season We just hoof the ball up the middle for Shola to get hold of it and he is NOT THE MAN TO DO THAT !!!!

Comment #68i might not be in the real here but if we can get say cissokho/pieters in, maybe barnetta and a number 9 then i will be very happy. I think whats so frustrating is that we are close to having a very decent and quite exciting looking team, just needs that extra few spaces filled. my cashley can keep the change.
and more on this story. go danny boy! I think This lad has something

Comment #69Barton doesn’t really have the choice to be honest. He could take a 4-5 year contract with QPR or a 1 with NUFC.. What if he gets a serious injury towards the end of this season and nobody will want to sign him?? Then he’ll be screwed! What would you do with your own personal jobs :S ?
