News is breaking that Joey Barton has been given permission to talk with Queens Park Rangers.
Joey Barton – taxi! – to QPR?
Tony Fernandes, the new owner of Queens Park Rangers, will be wanting to make a splash in the transfer market and because of that we think he may offer Joey a good deal and the Liverpudlian could be gone.
QPR new manager Neil Warnock has been given money to spend, and it’s in the tea leaves that QPR could offer Joey quite a good contract.
We hate to say this, but it looks to us like Joey could have played his last game for the Newcastle club, and against Sunderland no less.
Fernandes, who is a co-owner of The Team Lotus, bought a 66% stake in the West London club on Thursday for around £35M, and has pledged a further £10M to invest immediately.
Some of that could go to Barton’s wages since he will cost nothing, and the fact that Joey is in talks with the London club, suggests they have mentioned a possible deal and he’s interested.
Fernandes has set his first priority on Premier League survival, and there’s no doubt that Barton would be a tremendous buy for them.
If Joey leaves it means that Newcastle’s best four players, Andy Carroll, Kevin Nolan, Jose Enrique and Joey Barton have all left the club in the last eight months.
There’s nothing quite as depressing as losing your best players – for whatever reasons.
It will now be interesting to see if Newcastle try to bring in a replacement for Barton, and we think if they do, the likely target will be Swiss International Tranquillo Barnetta
But with one week Newcastle will need to improve their track record this summer, if they are to bring any players in before a week come Thursday.
Of course, as usual we are assuming this news is true, but we’ll know soon enough.
