Alan Pardew will try to win one of the two Cup competitions Newcastle are in this season.
Alan Pardew targeting both cups this season
It’s nice to hear a Newcastle manager talk about trying to win something for a change, and who knows, we may even be able to win something for the first time since way back in 1969.
If Birmingham can win the Carling Cup with the hopeless side they had last season, then it’s certainly not out of reach for Newcastle this season, given that Pardew will field strong sides of course.
On the other hand, getting anyway near the Premier League title is not within Newcastle’s capabilities at all, so it makes some sense to target the Cups, and a cup win will get the club back into Europe too.
Alan Pardew could soon be without Joey Barton, who underwent a medical on Wednesday in London, so we assume terms have been agreed with QPR, and if the 28 year-old passes his medical, he will sign on for the London club tomorrow.
This is what Alan said about the cup competitions:
“A realistic target for this football club must be a cup competition because the Premier League title, with all due respect, is not a viable situation for us.”
“You want to be in the game to win things, that’s what we are in it for, so the two cup competitions are very big for us this year.”
“I guess what happened to Birmingham last year isn’t going to fill us all with great enthusiasm in terms of winning the cup and being relegated.”
“But if you feel you are strong enough to attack the cup and attack the Premier League with the squad you have, then of course it’s a target.”
“For us, you only had to look at our bench on Saturday and the players who didn’t make the bench – like Alan Smith, for example – to know that I feel we are much stronger squad-wise this year to attack this competition, and also to attack the FA Cup.”
“I was five minutes away from winning the FA Cup with West Ham, and that side wasn’t as good as the team I have here,” . “So it’s possible, with luck.”
Newcastle have not won a trophy since winning the Inter-City Fairs Cup back in 1969, when Bobby Moncur was the captain and Joe Harvey was the manager.
And the last time we won a domestic cup was way back in 1955, when the lads won the FA Cup, when Jimmy Scoular was captain and Doug Livingstone was manager.
Alan Pardew will make some changes for the trip to Scunthorpe United on Thursday evening, but it may be he doesn’t make as many changes as we may expect.
It’s very important that Newcastle win this game, to keep the momentum going from the Sunderland win, and also to overcome the damage done that a fourth top Newcastle player this year, Joey Barton, is likely to leave the club, and probably on Thursday too.
Players like Sylvain Marveaux, Mehdi Abeid, Shane Ferguson, Sammy Ameobi, Demba Ba, Alan Smith, Steve Harper and Mike Williamson could all be involved at Scunthorpe.
But the main thing is to win the game, and then we can concentrate on hammering Fulham at St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
That would be three wins in a row and it would be a great start to the season for the Magpies, after a very difficult summer in the transfer window, which is not over yet.

Comment #42archaeomag – thanks for making me chuckle at the end of a crap day at work and yet another crap transfer window day.Every window we are linked with almost every registered player in the world – a league for the most transfer linked players is the only one we will ever win! Got to agree with MacToon’s summing up too

Comment #44i’d rather not lose barton, but at the same time i think this will give the likes of gosling, abeid and vuckic more chance of breaking into the team.
people are giving barton far too much credit, he could of signed a contract. he chose not to, and people saying he has a kid on the way and all that. get a grip, he earns a tonne.
left back and striker are crucial though.
but i do have a bad feeling we wont sign anyone else. hopefully i’m wrong though.
i will judge the window when it slams shut.

Comment #48I Think barton is trying to force NUFC to come up with a contract offer but think we kno by now that the club will not be held to ransom by any player..
Great player but doesnt kno when to shut his mouth…if he loves the club so much he would do everything he could to stay…like stop tweeting..
would love for him to stay but not at the risk of him turning players against the club..

Comment #56I’m glad to hear we’re taking the cup seriously- it makes sense and it would be great to have a cup run this season.
I think we need to play a reasonably strong team as you shouldn’t underestimate Scunny, especially at home. However this is a great chace to throw some fringe players/youngsters in the mix.
Therefore my team for Thursday is:
Krul
Simpson Colo(c) Willo Raylor
Marveaux GuthrieVuckic Lervenkrands
Best Ba
If things are going well we should try and throw on Sammeobi, Abied and Gosling at some point.
Here’s hoping for a win tonight and 3 points on Sunday, think how good we’ll all feel then!

Comment #64Whats this talk over twitter ive been hearing about. Why the f00k would we need to spend money to replace Barton?
We have adequate replacements already, in Obertan/Gosling.
Our Midfield is clogged with a total of 15 players who could supposedly now enter the first team Midfield.
Guttierez – Can Play on the Right wing.
Obertan – Right wing and Attacking MF?
Ben Arfa – Both Wings and Attacking MF
Gosling – Right Wing. CM/CDM
Cabaye – CM
Guthrie – CM and if push comes to shove RW
Tiote – CDM
Marveux – Left Wing
Ferguson – Left Wing
Smith – Reserves bench and Central Midfield
Vuckic – Central Midfield
Sammi – Wings
Kazenga – Wings and CAM
Raylor – Right Wing
Abeid – CAM and Wings.
Do we seriously need another player?. Theres no point buying talented youth players, if your never going to give them a chance. Gosling is more then capable of taking Bartons Role. He was impressive against Sunderland. Should have got a goal within the 5-10minutes that he played.

Comment #65Granted i did include Gutti, Cab and Tiote in that list. All who seem to be the preferred players in Mid Field. It just emphasizes my point on clogged our Midfield actually is.
12 players will be fighting it out for 1 Vacant Spot, now That Barton has left.

I agree. But realistically, we only have 6 good midfield players in good condition.
Jonas, Cabeye , Tiote , Obertan , Raylor and Gosling.
Ben Arfa and Guthrie is injured. Marveaux unfit. Smith will never start again, unless Pardew want us to play with 10 man. The rest too young and inexperienced.

Cabaye can’t play better if Barton play. Barton have more seniority and more dominant., Cabaye was being limited Now we can see Cabaye free kicks not just corners.

Rooney was 17 when he started for Everton. I can’t see why Vuckic, Abeid or Sammy can’t replace Barton. Sometimes youth exuberance is good for the team. Other examples like Del Piero, Totti, Maldini, Nesta, etc.they are all started in 1st team when they were 18 years old.

Comment #76I for one am glad to hear Pardew talking about winning at least one cup, it’s a massive monkey off the back if we could do so thats for sure.
I personally understand that we can’t win the league in the 2nd year back but winning a cup would help along the way thats for sure, it will bring a good( much needed) attention to the club and also may attract some better footballers (shouldnt be too hard now though if Barton goes).
Good on you Pardew some say you are a massive puppet/twat/gimp and a stool pigeon, I myself dont know you personally enough like the other people saying those things to call you a name, but i for one am happy to hear you talk positively about the club, unlike 90 percent of the so called fans on this website, who’s only positive thing in their lives was the first erection they had! LOL
My team for Thusrday as follows:
For Thursday
——————– Harper
Raylor——Saylor—–Willo——Ferguson
Abeid——Gosling —–Vukic——-Marveaux

Comment #77The common thing about Ashley or Pardew’s ass kissers is that they constantly criticizing other fans who equally love the club, but they never seem to come up with solid facts to support their arguments.
Pathetic.

Comment #80It is not any fan’s fault when Ashley shows lack of ambition, so grow up and stop pointing the finger at other fans, who are also the fans of the club.
If you want to hate any fans, hate the Mackems or Manure fans, not your own fans.
Every fans has their own views and opinions but remember at the end of the day they all support the same club.
