Newcastle In Advanced Talks For Italian International Full Back

There is more news today that Newcastle are in advanced talks with 20 year-old Inter Milan defender Davide Santon.

Davide Santon – looks an excellent young player

We had reported interest in this player last Saturday, and the reports seem to be persistent, so perhaps the news may even be true.

Davide has been interesting a number of Premier League clubs, but the most recent report suggests  Newcastle are the club at an advanced stage in the negotiations, and could bring the young Italian International full back to Newcastle.

The fee is said to be around £10M, but that’s probably a glorified guess at best, but his lad has already played 51 times for Inter Milan, and can play in either full-back position, so that would be an advantage to Newcastle.

Maybe Newcastle can shock us all and bring both Erik Pieters and Santon in, and that would put pressure on Danny Simpson at right back, and certainly improve the competition for places in the full back positions.

Santon was given his Inter Milan debut by Jose Mourinho back in the 2009/2010 season, and marked Cristiano Ronaldo in a Champions League game with Manchester United, and the youngster did remarkably well.

The youngster has played 7 times for Italy, and all the Italian Youth sides, and 12 times for the Italy U21 side, and he has been at Inter Milan since he was 16 years-old,  and has played 51 times for the Milan giants.

He joined Ravenna Calcio, based in  Calcio,  when he was he was a 10 year-old and the full-back has spent the last six months on loan at Cesena, where he played 11 times.

Santon was at one time considered to be the natural successor to Paolo Maldini, but things have not gone well for the lad this year, and he has been out on loan to get games.

This player looks very good, and the reports suggest he is interested in joining Newcastle, although Roma and Schalke 04 are also said to be interested, but the 20 year-old fits perfectly the type of player Newcastle are looking to sign and bring to Tyneside.

We hope these reports are true, because he would seem to be an excellent acquisition for the club, and it would be even better if Newcastle also signed Erik Pieters.

Comments welcome.

i would guess any interest in him is to force a deal through elsewhere as lyon/psv may be the kind of club he would go to…

but if we do get him wonder if it means qpr have followed up there interest in simpson too given his contract situation.

I’ve read too much speculation on too many players that has come to nothing, whilst we have signed other players seemingly out of nowhere, so I won’t believe this until it happens. The only solid piece of news is that SSN have reported that Pieter’s agent has revealed he expects the Pieters deal to be done, so I’m hoping that’ll come off. Meanwhile I’ll see what surprises await us…

Yes, it would be lovely – but just so out of character for FCB it would need a complete shift of mindset. Not sure reality is ready for this lol.

In my opinion, we will start spending cash in a year or two once Ashley gets all the money back from his interest free loans. I think that is fair enough, but my issue is the fact that we have been lied to over and over again. If Ashley/Llambias had come out and said ‘We are not going to spend a lot of it, but we will pay off the debt’ I would be fine with that, and I think Pardew has been lied to just as much as all of us.

I admit, I have been critical of Pardew but he is a very good tactician and like Chris Hughton seems to get on well with the players.

If we do get a takeover, I would prefer someone with passion for the club and not someone who takes over the club as a toy, and then gets bored quickly with the team.

From the £35m, i would like to see £10-15million invested in the academy and training facilities, because in the long run that will be very important, and we have a pretty good group of academy players. Look at Adam Campbell, Dennis Knight, JJ Hooper and Lee Toland, they have the potential to become very good players in the future.

If we get Santon, Pieters and a striker in I will be delighted personally. In terms of departures, Barton I’m disappointed that he left, but it allows Vuckic and Gosling a chance who are both very young and have less baggage than Barton. Nolan was a disappointment, as he was a leader. Routledge was rubbish, and Obertan for Routledge is a fantastic deal. As for Carroll, he is looking very rubbish at Liverpool, and £35m was a great deal, considering Rooney and Dzeko cost less.

Thinking about it – have their been many successful Italian defenders that have made it in the prem league anyway? It’s a very different style??

I take everything that comes from Joey Barton himself with a pinch of salt. His own biggest fan and clearly loves the attention. You don’t open a Twitter account and expect people to “follow” you without these attributes.

Maybe he doesn’t want to go, maybe he does, maybe he’s just looking for the best deal, but I want shot.

The Santon story is a load of bollo-ks – think about it! The fatman won’t pay £10m for a decent striker, but he will pay that for a young full-back? I agree Scotty, I don’t think Barton is too keen on the move, but what is the David Craig crap? He’s been with Barton ever since he left Tyneside yesterday, travelling with him and with him when he went for his medical, and then interviews him as if he’s just bumped into him!

Just been reading Lequipe and this statement from Erik Pieters Agent.(Translation is poor)

Erik Pieters, lateral left PSV, will soon engage with Newcastle according to his agent. It will bring EUR 7.5 million in Eindhoven. A time in the viewfinder of the English, Cissokho (Lyon) was too expensive.

Oh its the start of the silly season again…. the last week of the transfer window where we are linked with every player going who realistically we will never get in a million years!!! Then when the transfer window is closed and Fat Boy hasn’t signed a single player we will get the usual spiel of how we tried to get them in but there clubs were being unreasonable over the fee or the player wanted way to much money! Am I a cynic?…. maybe but i’m that used to the FCB lies and Pardew’s lack of knowledge of whats going on at the club to believe any different…..
