Last night’s win by Newcastle at Scunthorpe United was a typical Magpies display.
Tim Krul – great game last night
They put Newcastle fans through hell and high water before they finally won the game last night, and in great style too, with a wonderful goal from 19 year-old Sammy Ameobi.
And I just don’t know how those faithful traveling fans do it, and even after Newcastle’s pitiful performance in that first half, the Geordie fans were right behind the team after half time, and willed their team on to win for them, which the lads did finally, in extra time.
The only thing the team spared us from was a penalty shoot-out – and I’m not sure I could have taken that.
The good news is that Newcastle could have easily succumbed in that first half or even after that, and they had the superb Tim Krul in goal to thank for keeping them in the Cup, with some brilliant saves.
The young Dutchman is still improving and learning too, and his distribution and kicking needs some work, but we think this lad can become a great goalkeeper at Newcastle United.
And Pardew will take some good things out of this game, including a decent first appearance by Sylvain Marveaux out on the left wing, and excellent substitute appearances from both Sammy Ameobi and Haris Vuckic.
Both players looked good and helped sway the game in Newcastle’s favor in the seocnd half and during extra time, and the Magpies’ manager will not be able to ignore these two lads for too much longer.
And doesn’t 19 year-old Haris Vuckic, who turned 19 last Sunday, look a class player?
This is what Alan had said yesterday about Marveaux before the game:
“Since he’s been here, he’s struggled with his groin situation because he’s lacked football.:
“He’s slowly but surely getting there. We know he’s a very good player and I think he’ll certainly be ready to play soon.”
Sylvain showed he has lots of ability, but like a number of our new players, he will need time and games to acclimatize to English football.
And Demba Ba in particular was very disappointing last night, as he seemed way off the pace, and even a little disinterested.
Dan Gosling looked okay, showed he can play, but he needs more games to recover his sharpness, after a very long time out of the game., but we think Dan will become a very good player for Newcastle..
Since Newcastle won it was good news for the fans, but we also know we came perilously close to making an ignominious exit from the Carling Cup, much like we did at Stevenage last January in the FA Cup.
But the lads survived and live to fight another day, and we’ll see who we get in the third round in tomorrow’s draw.
A win is a win, and we want another on Sunday afternoon against Fulham, who lost 1-0 at Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the Ukraine, but got through on a 3-1 aggregate, after winning the first leg 3-0 at Craven Cottage.
Things may even be looking up, just a little, for Newcastle.
Comments welcome.

There are an awful lot of assumptions in your post there and if a psychoanalysis of my comment was your approach then you get a D minus son. I find it particularly amusing how you seem to think that my opposition to MA is a self-serving philosophy that allows me to judge others, and to fluctuate between adoration and hatred of the club. I do not judge my fellow fans as idiots for wanting to support the team-this is all i want to do, but I believe that loyalty is often misplaced, and inextricably connected to MA’s pocket. Rather than craving the attention of being the heroic Dragon Slayer as you would have me, I would rather the force of Newcastle fans United, stand together, as equals, against Mike Ashley, and demand that the unique brand that is the fans of NUFC reap the benefits of continued support through thick and thin-instead of tolerating what we are faced with: a man who has no interest or passion for us the fans or the city, and least of all the progress of the football club.
As for claiming the moral highground, well, I would say if anything you rather embarassingly attempted to do so in your last sentence, I simply want the club back in the hands of a passionate owner, not a criminal who divides us all.

Comment #179Felipe continues to be a spineless little coward I see, you don’t know what it is to be a Geordie if you’re willing to call fellow fans Mackems. It just makes you look stupid and unable to respond in a cohesive mature way to my opinions which evidently oppose yours. And I thought we were making inroads-don’t talk to me about sensible comments Felipe, you’re a brave boy over the internet, but i’ve got you sussed mate.

Comment #182I log onto this blog on a daily basis, has become almost instinctive and yet I am still constantly surprised by the constant criticism our team, manager and certain players are getting. Yes, last night we weren’t great, we were shellshocked by a lower league club in the first half because they were properly up for it, Pardew gave them a rollicking and they were rocking in the 2nd half. Simmo is a decent RB and does not deserve the slaggin he is getting, Ba is off the pace and fasting for Rammadan so that was perhaps Pardew’s fault for playing him. Gosling has been injured for 8 months and hasn’t had 1st team competitive football since the 5mins he played at the Stadium of Light last season so give him a break. At the end of the day WE BLOODY WON so give it a rest.
PSP go and boycott all you want you are a sad pathetic loser. And Angryman, I quite simply hate you and wish you would stop posting on this blog.

He does not have your money the club has your money and it is going in part to help clear past over spend so you can climb down of that hobby horse.
If you go back far enough in our history you will find some success other than that only one prize in the last 55yrs (aprox) shows we are not a team of great success.
A short sortie at the top table with KK and again with SBR the rest of the time sitting in mid table mediocrity, both of those top table sorties were accompanied with big spending and debt building.
I think a period of mid table mediocrity while becoming debt free may not be a bad thing ( in fact we should be used to mid table by now). Then being able to buy players with money we have instead of potential future finances.
It is in MA’s interest to see the club progress as it will help with the profile raising and globalisation of SD, so what makes you think that our billionaire is going to settle for mid table mediocrity????
A billionaire by their nature thrive on competition and beating the other guy and being the best at what they do that‘s what makes them billionaires and not just millionaires although the latter are very competitive as well.
Now please tell me what makes you think this particular billionaire is going to accept second best when everything in his nature says he must win?
