Is It Aly Cissokho Or Erik Pieters?

Newcastle’s top two left back targets are Erik Pieters of PSV and Aly Cissokho of Olympic Lyonnais, and both players are 23 years old and both have played for their countries, Holland and France respectively.

Aly Cissokho – is he Newcastle’s number one choice?

But which one Newcastle will sign before the transfer window closes is a good question.

We thought it would be Erik Pieters after The Sun reported on Friday that Newcastle had reached an agreement with PSV on the fee, but there is news in France that Newcastle will be meeting with Lyon officials this weekend to try to agree a fee for Cissokho.

Cissokho is said to be extremely keen to join Newcastle, and that deal could still happen it would appear.

We watched Lyon’s 2-1 home win against Montpellier on Saturday evening, and it’s hardly a secret that Newcastle are after Cissokho, who played left back in that game for Lyon, as the TV commentator kept mentioning the fact repeatedly.

According to reports in France, the two clubs will hold talks to see if they can agree on a fee, and Newcastle’s latest bid is said to be about £2M short of Lyon’s £9M asking price.

If the fee can be agreed, the French media are suggesting that Aly would travel to Newcastle on Monday for a medical.

Lyon were hoping for the money up front, but reports are that Newcastle want to pay on a performance related sequence of payments, after paying an initial fee, although that is not consistent with owner Mike Ashley’s policy of paying the total fee up front.

PSV play at home to Excelsior on Sunday, and it will be interesting to see if Pieters plays in that game, and if he does, it may suggest that Cissokho is indeed Newcastle’s number one choice.

If Aly does joins Newcastle, he will be the 6th French born player to sign on at Newcastle this summer.

Both Pieters and Cissokho are very good players,  and we’d be happy whichever player comes to Tyneside.

Still love to get another class centre half, maybe big samba from blackburn, pie in the sky i know but another centr half is needed as willy is only championship standard in my opinion, another right back simpson is definatly championship standard and of course a centre forward i genuinly think we will have at least 2 signings in before the deadline.

I think Cissokho would be the most Like-for-Like replacement for Enrique, he can get down the left hand side and deliver the ball to Ba, when he gets his act together and stops fasting that is 😛 Not going to lie, id be ecstatic if we signed Cissokho, but i’d be happy with either

I have a feeling that we will sign only french players in this transfer window
    Yohan Cabaye – £4.5M – Lille
Demba Ba – free agent – West Ham
Sylvain Marveaux – free agent – Rennes
Mehdi Abeid – free agent – Lens
    Gabriel Obertan – £3M – Man United
    Aly Cissokho – £8.6M – Lyon
    Nolan Roux – £7.1M – Brest

Could NUFC actually be considering having 2 LBs in the squad and buy both, as said above Pieters can also play CB.
I am pretty sure this wont happen and I will be just happy when/if we have one LB brought in!

Anyone know if Cissokho played well?

On this 35 million pound debate would we all have been happy if we had of bought cabaye for 10/12 million marveux for 6/7 million abeid for 2/3 million and even though ba dosnt look much at the min he will get goals for us when the crosses start coming in so maybe he would of cost 4/5 million now that total isat the highest figure27 million plus wages on top of that, these are the prices we would have been looking at if we did not get the either out of contract or with a contract clause, for me it makes sense to really search for these types even pieters has a clause in his contract apparently, a class act if we can get him on the cheap that would be good for me, we then still have money in the club, its sensible all the way for me in the current financial climate.

Don’t mind the sensible approach but some time we need to spend a little bit extra to get a decent player like a striker but it’s not what the fat controller wants to do FFS

ferritas i know what you mean about paying sometumes abit extra than the money you have set out to and in cissokho he may be the one were we have to do that, also a no9 who is the iconic figures at the toon and maybe the most iconic figue in treasured shirt in the prem who do we go for there have been names bandied about as we all know but if we can strike gold with our choice all well and good most of the ones mentioned look to have more than a bit of promise so we shall see. i like the look of nolan roux, but it could be anyone.

Graham Carr has gone ill, I’d honestly on a reduced pay as you play deal get Hargreaves in for Barton cover. If I know huge if, he stays fit he works endlessly. I’d go back in for that Blackburn youngster Houillot or along those lines. I’d take either of these left backs mentioned or both. Striker wellllllllll it would be popular but I’d go for Cameron Jerome. Before I get smashed here Pardew wanted prem experience and we have been linked with unheard of unproven foreign players. Also we have to be realistic albeit due to Fat Pie Direct who we can attract. Sturridge, Defoe, Crouch would never come even if we met the asking price. The first two are London boys and wouldn’t leave.
I am concerned about the lack of British players we now have especially with blatter and plantini undoubtedly getting there way. But other than cost pardew and Ashley have opted away from getting anymore boozers which is synonymous with British players. And reluctantly we haven’t won anything with them so toute possible???????

on joey barton i think in his time at the toon we treated him more than fairly to say the very least and no way should he be laying the law down to the club and holding them to ransom for me he bit the hand that fed him especially when he was in the big house he should not ever forgot that, we only had one and a quater good seasons out of him as he only played 15 times in the championship season, and i believe players did not come to the club beacuse of him in the past, i will not say good ridance but we move on with or without barton and i will say i think there is still a fantastic team spirit at the toon and that it will continue to be.

i don’t which 1. i think pieters would be more of a dominant LB, like jose. i think csskoho would be quicker and far more attacking LB than jose. i’m not sure on his defending, but if csskoho is decent at defending, i’d pick him

Funny to read your comments about the two left full backs guys, you seem to have an opinion even if you never saw any of them!

Cissokho is the more proven of the two, but Pieters is a coming man. I struggle to see who is the better, Cissokho has slightly more experience, but Pieters is no rookie. Any of them, I’d be happy. I’m more worried about the striker, tomorrow we’ll again field a strong side with poor strikers.

I dont think either is more proven than the other.

Cissokho had a good half year at Porto then a crap season at Lyon. But he did play CL football.

Pieters has been good and bad for PSV, but generally impressed. He has had lower level european football, but is an international.

Both pretty even on the ‘proven’ front IMO.

Jan Stavik, your right, i haven’t seen either play live, i seen a few videos of pieters on youtube, and i got impression that he’s a strong dominant LB. as for cissokho, i’m just going on what i’ve read and what others have said about him, but they both sound promising and i’d be happy with either.

beefman 13 sorry mate you talk rubbish, at a guess i would say you never liked JB the moment he stepped foot into SJP you were never going to like him whatever , yep he was in nick, yep he used to be a nasty t///t , however do you not think he has changed?you say he only played 15 times in the fizy league, at least he didnt desert us then when he played in the PL he was our best player, do you not see , he was trying to pay us back but when you have a owner who WONT let him pay the fans back, ( and who realises the fans are totally behind him) and get cretins like you believe he is a no good waster, that wernt prepared to give him a chance to pay the fans back make me vomit. i know barton on a social level and the limits he was prepared to go for the club was immense, so before you go letting your tounge overcome what brain you have, get your facts right or shut the f…k up knob

Stuartno9- before I say what I’m about to say I was gutted Barton left. But if he was that bothered about the fans why not sign the contract on the table in jan? Are u sure it wasn’t s game of brinksmanship with board that he lost? Nowhere in the comments from Beefman does he openly say he hates Barton and never liked him. So why the abuse?! Are people who aren’t socially chummy with Barton as u so obviously are not allowed to form an opinion now? So cut the abuse out u foul mouthed cretin and let people pass comment without getting loads of abuse back from some online bully!!

Barton may have had a very good season last year, he may well have turned over a new leaf and reinvented himself as a bohemian.
My opinion is slightly different I see the man as a self publising sociopath, a volcano waiting to errupt. Just look at the facts last season he punched a player on the pitch, this season he agressively dragged a player to his feet, if the referee had seen this clearly he would have been sent off again.
If I, or most of us, were to openly and publically criticise our bosses, no matter how right the statements were, we would be fired or at least marked as a troublemaker and moved on as soon as possible.
He has gone now to a bigger and better contract surprisingly (to him I am sure) not to one of the many Champions League clubs his agent alledged were keen to sign him.
I wish him luck and hope that new leaf remains sunny side up, but I fear we have not seen the last of the dark side.

P.S. Try using a full stop every now and then your comma key must be getting worn out.

I am going to attempt to predict the future, this will be the comments made by pardew on thursday morning…..well everybody knows we had out targets, we worked so hard behind the scenes and we just couldnt get them over the line, but, i still feel with the quality we have brought in, with ben arfa, who dont forget the boy aint played many fames so that will be like a new signing, im sure we have enough to more than hold our own in this league, and im sure shola and demba ba will score us goals, they proved that year in year out, and young ferguson is more than capable at left back, but im sure we will bring bodies to the club in january if we need em……..

If he says he’s turned over a new leaf then he must have done!!:-) I think he just slipped last season when he threw that punch at pedersen. Then he fell again and just so happened to pick gervinho up by his shirt with a snarling look that made him look like a volcano waiting to erupt! Seems your right after all!!:-)
