Newcastle’s top two left back targets are Erik Pieters of PSV and Aly Cissokho of Olympic Lyonnais, and both players are 23 years old and both have played for their countries, Holland and France respectively.
Aly Cissokho – is he Newcastle’s number one choice?
But which one Newcastle will sign before the transfer window closes is a good question.
We thought it would be Erik Pieters after The Sun reported on Friday that Newcastle had reached an agreement with PSV on the fee, but there is news in France that Newcastle will be meeting with Lyon officials this weekend to try to agree a fee for Cissokho.
Cissokho is said to be extremely keen to join Newcastle, and that deal could still happen it would appear.
We watched Lyon’s 2-1 home win against Montpellier on Saturday evening, and it’s hardly a secret that Newcastle are after Cissokho, who played left back in that game for Lyon, as the TV commentator kept mentioning the fact repeatedly.
According to reports in France, the two clubs will hold talks to see if they can agree on a fee, and Newcastle’s latest bid is said to be about £2M short of Lyon’s £9M asking price.
If the fee can be agreed, the French media are suggesting that Aly would travel to Newcastle on Monday for a medical.
Lyon were hoping for the money up front, but reports are that Newcastle want to pay on a performance related sequence of payments, after paying an initial fee, although that is not consistent with owner Mike Ashley’s policy of paying the total fee up front.
PSV play at home to Excelsior on Sunday, and it will be interesting to see if Pieters plays in that game, and if he does, it may suggest that Cissokho is indeed Newcastle’s number one choice.
If Aly does joins Newcastle, he will be the 6th French born player to sign on at Newcastle this summer.
Both Pieters and Cissokho are very good players, and we’d be happy whichever player comes to Tyneside.
