Santon On His Way – Newcastle Squad Stronger Than Last Season?

We reported the news this morning that Newcastle seemed to be closing in on a £5M deal for 20 year-old Italian International Davide Santon.

Davide Santon – on his way to Newcastle?

And Santon’s agent this morning has said that while at least Roma are after the 7 times capped Italian International,  Newcastle is their number one target.

This is what Santon’s agent Claudio Vigorelli told Corriere dello Sport this morning:

“At this time there is no possibility that Santon can join Roma because right now the aim is Newcastle.”

The 20-year-old Santon joined Internazionale’s youth system at the age of 14 from Ravenna, and he has played 51 times for Inter-Milan and 7 times for the full Italian side.

And the news today form the local Newcastle press is that Newcastle are still interested in signing one of two strikers Modibo Maiga from Sochaux or Nolan Roux from Brest, and also left-back Erik Pieters from PSV, all of whom played for their sides over the weekend.

The transfer window officially slams shut at 11:00pm on Wednesday night, so there is still time to bring in two or three good players buy then, and if Newcastle can do that, we think the squad could be even stronger than it was last season, even though we’ve lost three very good players in Carroll, Nolan, Enrique and Barton.

If Newcastle can sign two good players this week, the squad will be younger, the wage bill will be smaller, but the Premier League experience will be less than it was last season. It will then depend on how quickly the new French players can acclimatize to the Premier League this season.

But overall when you look at Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba, Mehdi Abeid, Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan coming in along with two new signings, and they have replaced Sol Campbell, Shefki Kuqi, Kevin Nolan, Jose Enrique, Joey Barton  and Wayne Routledge this summer,  the squad seems to be a good one and even (maybe) improved over last season?

What do you think?

Santon will be easy for the commentary team to pick out – he’ll be the one hobbling.

He’s a great young talent. If he’s good enough to start at Inter, he’s good enough for NUFC imo!

First post guys – it will be nice to see someone sign soon. So much speculation. Great results so far, kinda think we should have thrashed Aresenal after yesterday’s effort. Let’s hope we see some “B&W” strips on show soon.

I’d rather have Carroll, Barton, Enrique, Nolan, so definately no improved for me. Hope NUFC pull out their fingers and get some transfers done, but I have to say I’m doubtful.

**just something worth pointing out, SSN says that were “in taks with santon” not inter, meaning that (if true) a fee must have already been agreed with inter, i for one hope it happens, hes potentiallly a much better player than JE and can comfortably cover rb and lb, HWTL

For the sake of keeping Carroll we could of had all the frees and still had Nolan Barton and Jose on longer contracts

So are we stronger than last year? Not in my opinion

Just posted this on other page but think it’s a valid point:

Do we really want Ashley to spend all the AC money in one go? He’s investing it in young talent. Let’s say he buys a player for GBP5m and in 2 years sells for GBP10m then he doubles his money. That’s GBP70m for the club.

He is buying players slowly and wisely and making money.

A wise man once said “never spend money that makes money”. Ashley is ‘investing’ not ‘spending’.

That’s a good thing in the long run. Just KEEP THE FAITH!

I know this is extremely optimistic but I’m secretly hoping that Santon is being brought in as well as Pieters.

That would give us two potential LB’s (Pieters, Santon) 4 CD’s wen Willo’s back (S.Taylor, Collo, Willo, Pieters) and back-up for RB (Simmo, R.Taylor, Santon)

With 2 signings we’d have a lot more cover across the back four and would be a lot more solid.

I’d say the starting line up from them would be

    Santon – S.Taylor – Collo – Pieters

    backup – Simmo, R.Taylor, Willo

We should try and keep R.Tayls in the team somewhere though as his performances at the start of this season have been exceptional.

Nolan, barton, carroll were all fighters, without ever having too much technical ability. We’ve replaced them with cabaye, ba, marveux, and possibly santon who all have more natural ability, but whether or not they have the same drive as the players we lost remains to be seen. I for one prefer the route we’re going down now. There’s a reason why passion and fight winning over technical superiority is romantic, inspirational, and fairy tale like. Simply because it does not happen very often.

think stanton has regressed big style in seria A and with the pressure he get after being dubed “the next maldini” he needs to move out of Italy hence why roma is not an option. sound a perfect buy under ashley – he does love a gamble and hopfully will payoff.

    I’m in two minds.

I’d like if we had Enrique and Carroll still but not Barton and Nolan.

I personally think that we have a stronger squad I really do and I truly believe a decent striker and Left Back would be enough. I do feel that a Centre Back is needed too, that doesnt seem to even be on the cards tho.

The lads have been all right on the pitch. No Man U or Citeh, granted but still, all right and we have won. Thats what counts. isnt it?

I truly cant believe the pessimism on this Blog these days. We joked on the way back from the match saying people would still find summit to be negative about…. and some did…… We were joking when we said it but we were proved right.

No ones ever happy unless theyre an ashley apologist or a Mackem.

Though i believe Santon would be an outstanding buy, this must not mean we won’t get a left back in. Pardew has to make it clear he still needs a left-back as Santon is going kick Simpson out of the team instantly.
