We reported the news this morning that Newcastle seemed to be closing in on a £5M deal for 20 year-old Italian International Davide Santon.
Davide Santon – on his way to Newcastle?
And Santon’s agent this morning has said that while at least Roma are after the 7 times capped Italian International, Newcastle is their number one target.
This is what Santon’s agent Claudio Vigorelli told Corriere dello Sport this morning:
“At this time there is no possibility that Santon can join Roma because right now the aim is Newcastle.”
The 20-year-old Santon joined Internazionale’s youth system at the age of 14 from Ravenna, and he has played 51 times for Inter-Milan and 7 times for the full Italian side.
And the news today form the local Newcastle press is that Newcastle are still interested in signing one of two strikers Modibo Maiga from Sochaux or Nolan Roux from Brest, and also left-back Erik Pieters from PSV, all of whom played for their sides over the weekend.
The transfer window officially slams shut at 11:00pm on Wednesday night, so there is still time to bring in two or three good players buy then, and if Newcastle can do that, we think the squad could be even stronger than it was last season, even though we’ve lost three very good players in Carroll, Nolan, Enrique and Barton.
If Newcastle can sign two good players this week, the squad will be younger, the wage bill will be smaller, but the Premier League experience will be less than it was last season. It will then depend on how quickly the new French players can acclimatize to the Premier League this season.
But overall when you look at Yohan Cabaye, Demba Ba, Mehdi Abeid, Sylvain Marveaux and Gabriel Obertan coming in along with two new signings, and they have replaced Sol Campbell, Shefki Kuqi, Kevin Nolan, Jose Enrique, Joey Barton and Wayne Routledge this summer, the squad seems to be a good one and even (maybe) improved over last season?
What do you think?
