Sky Sports is reporting tonight that French club St Etienne have reached an agreement with Leeds United for their highly-rated winger Max Gradel.
Modibo Maiaga– may not get his dream move to Newcastle
The French club have just announced that a deal has been struck with Leeds United for their 23-year-old Ivory Coast International winger.
Gradel had also been linked with Sochaux today, and he was to be the replacement for Modibo Maiga, who was hoping to sign on at Newcastle, but that deal must now be doubtful, unless Sochaux can sign another replacement for Maiga within 24 hours.
Sochaux were said to be leading the chase this morning, for the fast and skillful winger, but the news is that St Etienne have won the race to sign him.
Sky Sports is reporting that Gradel is due in France tomorrow for a medical, and a statement released by St. Etienne read as follows:
On Tuesday evening, agreements have been reached in principle with Steaua Bucharest and Leeds United for the arrivals of Banel Nicolita and Max Gradel.
Both players have been in St Etienne’s sights for several weeks and will arrive on Wednesday for medical checks and to complete the final details of their contracts.”
There is also late news tonight that Leeds United have reluctantly agreed to the move, after the 23 year-old handed in a transfer request, so that looks like the move will be definite, assuming that Gradel passes his medical.
As we said that’s bad news for Newcastle’s move for Modibo Maiga unfortunately.
Newcastle have also been linked with a loan move for Italian U21 and Manchester United striker Federico Macheda, who is still only 20 years old.
That could probably now be the striker signing that Newcastle will make before 11:00 pm tomorrow night, when the transfer window closes shut, although it’s disappointing news that Sochaux couldn’t tie up Gradel.
QPR are also in the hunt for Macheda, but earlier today Federico’s agent said Newcastle were ahead of QPR in the race to sign the Italian on loan.
But Machido will give Newcastle something different with his skill up front, and he could also be a good signing for the club, although it would have been good to have signed up Maiga on a permanent basis.
