Davide Santon Having Medical – Contract Agreed

As we reported yesterday, it seems that Newcastle have agreed a £5M fee with Inter Milan for their 20 year-old full-back Davide Santon, but success now rests on the Magpies being able to negotiate a wage deal,  and meet the youngster’s demands.

David Santone – in wage negotiations with Newcastle
And late breaking news from Sky Sports this morning is that Davide is now to have a medical, so Newcastle must have agreed a wage deal for the youngster, and the deal is very close to completing.

Great news!

After at least a couple of weeks negotiating with PSV for their left-back Erik Pieters and with Lyon for their left-back Aly Cissokho, Newcastle still didn’t meet the asking price of either player.

That’s one reason Newcastle need so much time to negotiate transfer deals, because they low-ball their offers so much, unlike some other clubs in the Premier League.

We thought Pieters would have been an excellent buy for the club, but it now seems that deal is dead in the water, and Aly Cissokho was a couple of million more expensive then Pieters, so that deal will not happen either.

We suppose the good news is that at least Newcastle have agreed a fee for the young Italian International, but there were reports last night that Davide will meet with Newcastle officials in London, and that his wages could be a problem.

But the news this morning is good,  and it now seems Newcastle have agreed terms with the youngster and he is to undergo a medical.

The right-footed youngster can play in either full back position, which is an advantage to Newcastle, and he is an attacking full-back, much like Jose Enrique.

Internationale’s Chief Executive Riccardo Montolivo had this to say about his young player.

“Santon at Newcastle? He’s still an Inter player, but until the end of the market we cannot exclude anything,”

But being right footed means Davide will not be a like for like replacement for Jose Enrique, which Pieters and Cissokho would have been, so there is some hope that Newcastle will now sign Santon and also Pieters or Cissokho,  to bolster Newcastle’s defensive options.

But getting Pieters or Cissokho is unlikely to happen, but would have been great if Newcastle could have done the double deal, since Newcastle are now short on defenders.

Santon’s agent Claudio Vigorelli yesterday dismissed rumors of a move for his young client to Roma, simply  because  the 20-year-old is said to be keen to to move to Newcastle.

There’s no doubt that Santon is a top young Italian player, and we think he would be an excellent acquisition for Newcastle.

And the 20 year-old has been praised by some top managers in the game, including his former manager at Inter-Milan, Jose Mourinho, who praised him for his personality and tactical knowledge, and by former Italy manager Marcello Lippi, who said he was the next Paulo Mandini.

Excellent praise indeed.

We’d be happy if Newcastle can agree a deal for Davide, but we’d be even happier if Newcastle can also get Pieters or Cissokho through the door by tomorrow night.

If they can do that then Newcastle will then have two very good new full backs.

Here’s hoping, and we’ll just reiterate that it seems the deal for Santon will go through, assuming he passes his medical in London.

One down and one to go? One down and two to go?

Comments very welcome.

Gradel in advanced talks with Sochaux. Keep an eye on Gradel. Could be the difference between us signing Maiga and not signing Maiga.

@Richy – Yeah I think so. Gradel is going to Souchaux and that will allow Grayson to take Smith back so essentially he will be released…

I reckon we need more than just Santon. I’d rather a out and out left back than a versatile full back. Play Santon on the right, and bring in the left back we so desperately need.

    @ichrisho

    I hope so.
He was on the pitch 10 minutes.
    Gave the ball away twice.
Was lucky to get away with a serious mistimed kick on the edge of the box.
Then got booked and put pressure on us with a free-kick from an unnecessary challenge.

If they pay 10% of his wages … let him go.

Great news, seems like a future star…

If stoke are going for Lukaku, cant we try and steal him on loan hes probably already better than what we’ve got.

And please lord let alan smith join leeds. He came on at 3-0 against west brom, drew 3-3…2-0 at fulham, almost drew 2-2… hes terrible

geoff 777 – Was pretty shocking – Heart in my throat everytime Smith got the ball, especially that little mistake on the edge of the box. Could easily have undone all the hard work with a cameo like that.

Still grateful to the lad for all the hard work he put in in the Championship, but I think his premier league career is pretty much done.

Would love to see this lad as one for the future, I personally think Pieters is the perfect LB being friends with Krul then offer 5 mil for Kuyt thats 3 dutch internationals then after Arsenal have a shocking year and Arsne walks go after Van Persie.

This is great news. Santon is a quality player, and I dislike the heirarchy as much as the next man, but seriously, are they worse than Shepherd?

    Shepherd signings: Owen, £16m
    Boumsong, £8m
    Babayaro, £1m
    Carr, £1m
    Amdy Faye £2.5m

    Newcastle signings:
    Simpson: 500k
    Tiote: £3.5m
    Best: £1m
    Cabaye: £4.8m
    Ba, Marveaux, Abeid all free
    Santon £5m

I think I know which I prefer. We may be more prudent, but I believe that survival is the main aim until all the debt is cleared

as to where the £35m has gone, I believe some of it has gone inot scouting and the academy, I’d say only a maximum of £15m has been spent on that, but our academy looks very good.
Adam Campbell, JJ Hooper and Miele is supposed to be very good.

Get in Maiga/Roux then this window would be a success.

I’d personally prefer Roux cos we may lose Maiga for the African Cup of Nations, but can’t be too fussy! 🙂

    HWTL!
