We knew that a few weeks ago, there were reports that Alex Ferguson had offered Newcastle’s Alan Pardew, Manchester United striker Federico Macheda as a loan deal.
Federico Macheda – option on season long loan
But there’s news today that Newcastle are back in for Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga, but that depends on Sochaux bringing in a suitable replacement, and they are in advanced talks with Leeds United’s Max Gradel.
We have to hope that both those deals go through, and we think Modibo would be a great acquisition for Newcastle. But if that doesn’t go through Newcastle may well go for the Italian U21 International striker, on a season long loan.
Macheda was signed by Manchester United in September of 2007, shortly after his 16th birthday, and his family relocated to England with him.
Macheda has played 27 times for the Manchester United first team and scored 4 goals, and we suppose if Newcastle cannot get Maiga, then Frederico would be a decent acquisition on loan for the season, to bolster Newcastle’s attacking options.
As you would expect, Newcastle are making no official comments on any of their transfer dealings, but if the news today is to be believed, then Newcastle are giving Davide Santon of Inter-Milan a medical, having agreed a fee with the Italian club and terms with the player.
And a surprise to us is that Newcastle seem about to announce the acquisition of 25 year-old Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot, as Newcastle’s third senior goalkeeper, and we have to assume Pardew wants a third experienced goalkeeper in for the season.
But that cannot be too encouraging for 20 year-old goalkeeper Ole Soderberg at Newcastle.
Davide Santon is right footed and can play on either side, and even started his career as a winger, so there’s still a chance – a hope really – that Newcastle could also sign either Erik Pieters or Aly Cissokho, with Danny Simpson rumored to be delaying on signing a new long term contract at Newcastle.
But things are starting to look up a little on Tyneside, and certainly it seems Santon will sign soon, assuming he passes his medical.
Comments welcome.

Comment #5I honestly do hope we get Macheda, he’s the pacey striker we need.
Also means Loven is out of the team. Macheda is surely better than him.
BUT, has to be option to buy if he comes through.

Comment #6In the past I thought Carlos Vela would be good to get on loan and I have the same opinion of this lad!
Yes, his record isn’t great yet but he’ll play with no fear and if anything, he will love to prove to Alex Ferguson that he is good enough to play in the Premier League. I also think he would compliment the strikers we already have at the club.
I really don’t see why we shouldn’t do this deal if it is possible, but I must say that I still hope we get a permanent striker in as well/instead!

Comment #8I was watching a tv debate a while ago and newcastle were mentioned and as to what class of player we can attract. A few “experts ” stated newcastle could not attract world class players however they should easily attract the next level down. Does anyone else think we can only actually go for the third tier? Why would any top player come here at the moment. Wage cap, no european football, unlikely to challenge for honours in this country. Big crowds and awesome supporters are sometimes not enough. Maybe as fans we have to lower our expectations on who we can sign.

Comment #9The talk of all these players is good but i cant see us getting all of them. I am not going to return until thursday morning and my money is that we would have signed Santon, Elliott and Macheda on loan. Possibly Maiga but i reckon there will be some problem there.

Comment #11Zarate Confirms England Switch On Twitter
Mauro Zarate has inadvertently confirmed his imminent departure from Lazio. His brief statement on the social networking site Twitter; suggests he’s set to join an English club in the coming 48 hours.
The statement in part reads: “I’ll go to England soon we are in talks,” this excerpt contrasts with what his agent Giuseppe Bozzo said earlier.
Liverpool and Manchester City are believed to be the gate-crashers, while Arsenal’s position as favourites to land the 24-year-old striker is still intact

Comment #12I believe he would fit in really well. We could have a few links in the new players if we were to get Macheda in, even on loan. He would be a great buffer for Santon, a fellow Italian, and he will know Obertoon well, obviously from Man Utd. Will definitely be joining GG with a couple of bottles if we get the players in I would most like.
Santon
Maiga
Situ
Macheda (loan)
And in dream world, you can throw Cissokho in there as well.

Comment #17Not sure why we’d want to help a Man Utd striker improve … handy as a sub or for the African Nations, but Man Utd would want him to play more.
If we have Maiga, Ba & Best with HBA as a second striker. Where & when does Macheda play?

Comment #18@ Pardew No 1 We have ready made replacements in Ranger, Lovenkrands and Shola. They can take their pick! And whilst they’re browsing, we can tell them of a buy one, get 2 free offer and throw in Smith and Perch.
Oh, and if they’re looking for a new owner……….

Comment #23Phoenix – I think that a lot of us lowered our expectations fairly early, despite talk of Huld and others at the start of the window.
When it became apparent that we weren’t going to lash up £15m – £20m on one player, the names of expected arrivals changed drastically.
I think we’ve been looking at a very mixed bag, from Championship players to Champions’ League players, which is prudent. It’s my personal opinion that we’ve done will in this transfer market and the players we’ve bought in are of good quality. Some will agree, some won’t, which is fair, as we won’t really know what we’ve got until they’ve “bedded in”.
Ulitmately, I don’t care what level of player we talk to, as long as they can play and they want to be here.

Although I say I would like to see him here, I must correct myself and say that I would only like it IF we have the option to buy.

Best seems to get injured a lot and Ba has this knee worry (not like nee worries pal, but knee worry). We don’t know how long it will take HBA to get back to form and fitness and Shola’s, well, Shola.
There is room for Machaeda, but I’d rather he was either coming in with a view to buy, or we were giving one of our prospects his spot.

Comment #36Unless any deal for a youngster is a view to buy, I wouldn’t bother. Its doing nothing for us in the medium to long term. If maiga comes in, then Ben arfa will play behind him, so macheda wont get as many games anyway.

Fairly pleased with our signings, some real bargains. Cabaye looks outstanding.
Some we’re yet to really see (Marveaux) and one real prospect for the future (Abeid).
Disappointed that we haven’t signed a quality striker.
Underwhelmed by Maiga, but hope he becomes a real star.
Ba finally showed a glimpse of form and may yet turn out to be a real bargain.
Santon looks a great player hopefully he’ll settle in and fulfil his potential with us.
Hope that helicopter is grounded by heavy fog tomorrow.
