Newcastle Linked With Five Players In Transfer Market

Newcastle have been linked with five players today in the transfer market.

Davide Santon – due for a medical at Newcastle

The news yesterday was that Newcastle’s advances for left-backs Erik Pieters and Aly Cissokho to come in for Jose Enrique, looked dead in the water, because Newcastle would not pay, or even get close to, the asking price of either player.

However, some good news today is that Newcastle are close to signing 20 year-old Italian International full-back Davide Santon, who is said to be flying to Newcastle to have his medical after a fee and personal terms were agreed.

And Newcastle are back in for 23 year-old Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga, according to Sochaux President Alexandre Lacombe, and that deal going through depends on Sochaux signing a suitable replacement.

Modibo Maiga – could get his dream move to Newcastle after all

But talks today  with Leeds United over their Ivorian winger Max Gradel, are said to be at an advanced stage with Sochaux, so that could be good news for Newcastle’s attempts to finally sign the Mali striker.

Newcastle are also said to be showing an interest in the Israeli captain Yossi Benayoun, and the skillful winger is about to leave Chelsea for pastures anew, and he tweeted yesterday he was in negotiations with several clubs.

Newcastle appear to be one of those clubs, but at 31, we’d be surprised if he lands up at Newcastle, although he is very good player and could do well on Tyneside.

And Newcastle have also been linked with a possible loan deal for Manchester United Italian U21 International striker, Federico Macheda.

Macheda’s agent, Giovanni Bia thinks he will go out on loan to Newcastle, but QPR are also interested.

This is what Bia told ciomercato.com.r today:

“Macheda doesn’t return to Italy, Manchester United will send him on loan in the Premier League,”

“At this time Newcastle has the edge over Queens Park Rangers.”

But we assume that deal would only be struck, if the Maiga deal doesn’t go through, but maybe not.

And with Maiga and possibly Macheda coming in at Newcastle, Nile Ranger is back in talks with Blackpool over personal terms today.

The Seasiders have already agreed a fee of around £1M with Newcastle, but couldn’t agree terms with the Londoner last month.

In addition, the local Newcastle press are reporting that Newcastle will soon announce the arrival of Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot, and we can only assume Alan Pardew wants three experienced goalkeepers at Newcastle this season.

Comments always welcome.

Santon, Maiga, Elliot should come through, Pieters or Cissokho would be nice, as we do need a left back to come in.

We need a LB and striker desperately. Davide Santon is a good signing but not a LB. Come on Pardew, and MA get your hand out your pocket and spend some money!

Finally found some rumours that the Situ deal is looking to be tied up tomorrow at some point.
Newcastle are prioritizing other areas first.

Situ would be a sub straight away imo, he’s really that good.
    Same age as Santon.

Apparently Santon can cover across the defence and midfield. He’s meant to be extremely versatile. Let’s hope he passes the medical. But we are desperate for a LB, and would like to think we have some ambition in going for Cissokho. Porto paid £15m for him not long ago, and we could get him for half that. He is France’s number 2!!

I don’t get why people are saying that Santon is not a LB due to him being right footed.
What does that have to do with anything?
He plays LB regularly, and sometimes RB for Italy.
The lad has 7 caps at the age of 20, is touted for greatness and judging youtube (yes youtube) on several matches, he really is great.
He’s a fullback adaptet to both sides, but plays LB mostly.

Just read a damning precis on Santon on Goal.com by Italian journalist. Says he has badly lost his way and is very poor against quickdirect opponents, and that is why Inter are selling.

A right footed LB won’t provide us with any balance on the left hand side. We’re already unbalanced as Jonas cuts inside loads. How are we expected to stretch teams on the overlap if our LB starts cutting inside as well. We had a great Left wing partnerships with Jose and Jonas, and we should be looking to repeat this. Hence, why I guess most people, me included, are saying we’d like to see a left footed LB.

Realsitically, Santon is our new LB. He’s played many times there before, likes to attack and switch feet and copme inside – Perfect.

Then keep Ferg as LB 2, and Raylor LB 3/Right mid cover….

If Jonas isn’t going to whip crosses into the box, then it’s down to the LB to do this!!

Lets hope Mike doesn’t see this or we’ll never get him – Way above our age policy!

can still see us ending up with no one and all at NUFC saying we tried our best but clubs just wanted too much ,the player wanted to much etc etc
ALL clubs know how much we’ve taken in this last year and the players how much we’re now saving on wages so they are bound to want maximum from us
as the old saying goes – you pay peanuts you’ll end up with monkeys

As usual, English football fans failing to grasp the basic fact that a player should be comfotably two-footed – which is why an Italian international quality full back just might be equally comfortable at Left or Right Back?

Honest to god, we could end this transfer window with a season long loan for Macheda, Maiga, Situ and Santon in on decent deals and people on this board would still be up in arms.

How many assists did Jose Enrique provide from a left footed cross in his time with us? Santon is a young dynamic defender who has lost his way due to the pressure put on him by the Italian press. I have faith in this kid, If he gets back on track he will be better than Jose.

Alex – the journalist who wrote the piece is avery respected, long standing viewer of Italian football. Think about it – Inter Milan letting a defender go for only £5m. The cheap option again because fatso wouldn’t pay the rate for Pieters or Cisshoko – like the tat he sells in Sports Direct, he only wants cheapies, hence loan deal for Macheda who hasn’t hit a barn door for 2 years now.

Don’t you think the real reason we loan Macheda because Santon. Macheda live in England for years and he will help Santon to adapt well in England.

    Reasonable ?
