Newcastle have been linked with five players today in the transfer market.
Davide Santon – due for a medical at Newcastle
The news yesterday was that Newcastle’s advances for left-backs Erik Pieters and Aly Cissokho to come in for Jose Enrique, looked dead in the water, because Newcastle would not pay, or even get close to, the asking price of either player.
However, some good news today is that Newcastle are close to signing 20 year-old Italian International full-back Davide Santon, who is said to be flying to Newcastle to have his medical after a fee and personal terms were agreed.
And Newcastle are back in for 23 year-old Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga, according to Sochaux President Alexandre Lacombe, and that deal going through depends on Sochaux signing a suitable replacement.
Modibo Maiga – could get his dream move to Newcastle after all
But talks today with Leeds United over their Ivorian winger Max Gradel, are said to be at an advanced stage with Sochaux, so that could be good news for Newcastle’s attempts to finally sign the Mali striker.
Newcastle are also said to be showing an interest in the Israeli captain Yossi Benayoun, and the skillful winger is about to leave Chelsea for pastures anew, and he tweeted yesterday he was in negotiations with several clubs.
Newcastle appear to be one of those clubs, but at 31, we’d be surprised if he lands up at Newcastle, although he is very good player and could do well on Tyneside.
And Newcastle have also been linked with a possible loan deal for Manchester United Italian U21 International striker, Federico Macheda.
Macheda’s agent, Giovanni Bia thinks he will go out on loan to Newcastle, but QPR are also interested.
This is what Bia told ciomercato.com.r today:
“Macheda doesn’t return to Italy, Manchester United will send him on loan in the Premier League,”
“At this time Newcastle has the edge over Queens Park Rangers.”
But we assume that deal would only be struck, if the Maiga deal doesn’t go through, but maybe not.
And with Maiga and possibly Macheda coming in at Newcastle, Nile Ranger is back in talks with Blackpool over personal terms today.
The Seasiders have already agreed a fee of around £1M with Newcastle, but couldn’t agree terms with the Londoner last month.
In addition, the local Newcastle press are reporting that Newcastle will soon announce the arrival of Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot, and we can only assume Alan Pardew wants three experienced goalkeepers at Newcastle this season.
Comments always welcome.

Comment #43Macheda was quality in pre season.. Thats why United want to loan him out! They would just sell him if they thought he was crap! Also the piece on Santon – The guy said he’s just suffered from a breakdown in confidence but has the ability to be world class! A move and a fresh start is what he needs, he’s only 20 ffs

In allot of way he’s similar to Enrique, he’s pacey, got good physics, likes to go forward, defends well too.
We all know about Italian defenders, this is something they are GOOD at.

Comment #48@34 I bet you decent cash Cisshoko is going to Inter and that’s why we’re getting Santon. He nearly moved there in 2009.
imo Pieters doesn’t really want to come here, the throw-away statement he made regarding ‘his knowledge of the toon being F. All and the only things he knew were what Krul told him’, spoke volumes. His agent was using us of a way of touting his player.
Not sticking up for the board here, I just think it’s best waiting to be pissed of til 11.01pm tomorrow. Plenty of time stick the knife in then no doubt. Might as well have a laugh getting involved in speculation until then.

Comment #49Anyone else want a serviceable back-up for Tiote? He’ll miss a few games to suspension & then the Africa Cup of Nations? I don’t want Alan Smith playing. I guess Cabaye could fill the role, but I’m hoping he becomes more of a playmaker.

Comment #54magsince96 – What a magnificent contribution to this thread you have made with your post. When you are back from the toilet after t0ssing yourself off over getting “1st” maybe you could contribute something meaningful!!!!?
@ Normal folk. Macheda would be a decent loan signing however I fear we are now trudging around the loan markets very late in the day due to our inept policy on transfers.

Comment #55@47 I do reckon Cabaye will drop back, but we’ll let Gosling have a run out in the event that Tiote disappears to the ACN.
That or play Ben Arfa a little further back and two strikers.

I’d rather listen to Inter fans about Santon than some two-bit ‘journalist’ on a horrible rumour site.

Comment #58We are signing a 20year old Italian International full back from Inter Milan, yet still some fans are having a pop at Ashley, and would rather have Pieters!!
Before the last couple of weeks had you even heard of Pieters? Santon has already been around 3/4 years played international football and champs league.
Some f.u.c.kers are never happy.

Comment #59Faustino – No he didnt that was AC Milan. Cissokho will no go to Inter. Inter dont have money and the reason Santon is going is yes, he did lose some form and cofidence, but mainly they have Chivu, Maicon, Nagatomo and a a new youngster they consider very promosing, that is the reason Santon is leaving.

Comment #68Oh and adding to what I said above. Santon is being sold because Inter need to buy and have NO money, couple this with the fact they’re well stocked in RB/LB and have a another very promising young player, then it makes sense that Santon is sold as he made a bit of a name for imself and would sell for more than others players they could cope without.

Comment #78Celtic have confirmed the signing of striker Mohamed Bangura on a four-year contract from AIK Stockholm
Sky Sports sources understand Queens Park Rangers are now in talks with Sunderland defender Anton Ferdinand as Neil Warnock continues his efforts to bring in new signings before the transfer window closes.
Manchester United striker Federico Macheda could be set to join Newcastle on loan, according to the player’s agent.
