Newcastle have been linked with five players today in the transfer market.
Davide Santon – due for a medical at Newcastle
The news yesterday was that Newcastle’s advances for left-backs Erik Pieters and Aly Cissokho to come in for Jose Enrique, looked dead in the water, because Newcastle would not pay, or even get close to, the asking price of either player.
However, some good news today is that Newcastle are close to signing 20 year-old Italian International full-back Davide Santon, who is said to be flying to Newcastle to have his medical after a fee and personal terms were agreed.
And Newcastle are back in for 23 year-old Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga, according to Sochaux President Alexandre Lacombe, and that deal going through depends on Sochaux signing a suitable replacement.
Modibo Maiga – could get his dream move to Newcastle after all
But talks today with Leeds United over their Ivorian winger Max Gradel, are said to be at an advanced stage with Sochaux, so that could be good news for Newcastle’s attempts to finally sign the Mali striker.
Newcastle are also said to be showing an interest in the Israeli captain Yossi Benayoun, and the skillful winger is about to leave Chelsea for pastures anew, and he tweeted yesterday he was in negotiations with several clubs.
Newcastle appear to be one of those clubs, but at 31, we’d be surprised if he lands up at Newcastle, although he is very good player and could do well on Tyneside.
And Newcastle have also been linked with a possible loan deal for Manchester United Italian U21 International striker, Federico Macheda.
Macheda’s agent, Giovanni Bia thinks he will go out on loan to Newcastle, but QPR are also interested.
This is what Bia told ciomercato.com.r today:
“Macheda doesn’t return to Italy, Manchester United will send him on loan in the Premier League,”
“At this time Newcastle has the edge over Queens Park Rangers.”
But we assume that deal would only be struck, if the Maiga deal doesn’t go through, but maybe not.
And with Maiga and possibly Macheda coming in at Newcastle, Nile Ranger is back in talks with Blackpool over personal terms today.
The Seasiders have already agreed a fee of around £1M with Newcastle, but couldn’t agree terms with the Londoner last month.
In addition, the local Newcastle press are reporting that Newcastle will soon announce the arrival of Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot, and we can only assume Alan Pardew wants three experienced goalkeepers at Newcastle this season.
Comments always welcome.

Comment #82I wonder if the people who stated, categorically – because they obviously know the inner workings of the club – that we will definitely not sign a single player, will ever post on here again. Maybe just a little “I stated a false truth.”
I wonder…..

Comment #83Happy to take Macheda on loan for the season. No point buying someone just for the sake of it. We can then look again in January or next summer.

Comment #84Ranger and Smith, hopefully out by tomorrow!! So that could be why Maiga and Macheda will sign.
Remember the last Italian forward we signed Rossi, and Roeder champion of youth would not play him!

Comment #86Santon has the POTENTIAL to be a great buy. Looks tall, quick, comfortable on the ball. All great attributes to have in a full back. Someone mentioned earlier he cant defend but he is big and quick and with a little bit of work im sure he will be very good at both attacking and defending. I said it before but when we signed Enrique he wasnt the best defender and he had similar attributes to Santon (quick and good on the ball) now he has left 4 years later and everyone is raving on about how no winger could get passed him so it can be done !!!

Comment #92How Macheda think he will get more time on the pitch here ? He has to beat Ba-Best and Shola to get line-up starter.
If he want to play more regular first team, he should go to QPR. We cannot guarantee that to him.

Comment #97My cousin is a die hard Inter fan and he has said nothing but good things about Santon, the reason he is being aloud to leave is he broke to early, the pressure and being tagged as the next Maldini got to him…being only 18 thats pretty understandable, with a fresh team and new start being exactly what he needs…to quote my cousing “you will be signing a very good player, with massive potential”

I agree with you, partially. The him being “POTENTIALLY” good, only relys on him understanding and grasping the english game.
He’s as close to the finished article as u can get for a 20 year old. He’s got 7 caps for Italy.
If there’s a chance he wont make it with us, it’s not because of his potential as a player, but not getting to grips with the PL.
He’s already a great player.

Comment #100Wikipedia says his height is 6’2 if thats right or not im not sure, but we do need a bit more height at the back. Fulham scored a header and could have scored about 3 headers. Scunthorpe scored from a knock down from a cross and to be honest we do look vulnerable at defending corners/freekicks/crosses etc. Obviouslly its not all down to height, better marking would help also.

If he doesn’t play well or play any games he will go back to Man Utd In january.
I’ve said for ages I would sign another two strikers. 😉

Comment #103People seem to think Inter are selling him (Santon) because he’s not good enough, but they already have Chivu and Nagatomo at left back and Maicon, Cicero and Zanetti can play right back, plus Inter are in debt. Give the lad some credit, he’s broken into the Italy team aged 20, he can’t be all that bad.

Comment #106If we get the 5 players in and the two out that Milner has posted, would we class this as a successfull transfer window, I would have to say yes, as long as they get Situ and Remy as cover for the back as well.

Comment #109Davybtoon @83 – Get a grip mate will ya. Where are all the neggers?? You mean 95% of toon fans. Not really sure why youre getting excited cos we might actually spend £5m of the £50+ we have in Fattys sky rocket. Ive read it all now… Pro Ashley followers of the toon sitting back smoking a cigar cos we are getting a goalkeeper for next to nowt from the old second division and a £5m defender YET we are still waiting for a striker worth their salt to replace £35m Andy Carroll. Theres a few on here that give us all a laugh…

Comment #113Scottishmagpi – Not this time, the deal is with NO option to buy, so would be pointless and from a view point of prinicipals and or supposed club policy, it is disgusting.
People are forgetting that Sampdoria got relegated with Macheda playing for them. He made a great contribution of 0 goals in 14 league appearances.

Comment #115Why would we want to nurture one of Fergies kids. Are we that skint that we cant buy our own. Play one of our youngsters NOT loan a rivals. To top it off the bloke is pants. Suppose when we are that desperate for ANY signing some are creaming their pants cos were signing some shocking player. Good god!

Comment #116otters, fans are not having a pop at ashley because we are going to sign a decent fullback, the problem is if he is going to be our last signing in this window it is simply not enough. for yhe last 3 months we have been looking at every player who has been up for sale or whos contract is coming to an end , and we end up with (maybe) a 20 year old defender who might do a job for us , but you know as well as anybody else we need strikers. when this window closes, and best gets injured, we are in big trouble january will seem light years away it is again a poor show by our owner. he has to cough up even pay a premium for a striker to have any chance to survive

your right, maybe i shouldnt have used the word potentially. I think he is better than what we have and should go straight in to the team. He is undoubtedly good but questions were over his defending so i was trying to say he has the attributes to potentially turn also in to a good defender.

Situ has a bigger rep in France due to him captaining several youth sides through is career, and doing it succesfully.
Remy, however skilled, he’s not as well known as a “starlet” as Situ is, so he kind of falls in the shadow.
It’s just my guess, but sounds sensible to me. I think we’ll find it tomorrow about those two.
