Newcastle have been linked with Yossi Benayoun, who tweeted yesterday that he was in negotiations with a number of clubs.
Yossi Benayoun – too old at 31?
Yossi will not get much playing time at Chelsea now that midfielder Juan Mata has arrived from from Valencia.
We;d be surprised if this news has much truth to it, because at 31, Benayoun doesn’t fit the profile of younger players Newcastle are usually after these days.
But of course one link is that Alan Pardew brought Yossi to England back in 2005, when he was manager at West Ham, and the London club signed the Israeli from Spanish club Racing Santander. Maybe that’s the source of this story.
The news over the last week or so is that Benayoun would likely be included as a player in a part-exchange offer from Chelsea for Spurs top Croation International midfielder Luka Modric.
Only last summer Benayoun moved to Chelsea from Liverpool on a free transfer, after playing 134 times for Liverpool from 2007 with 29 goals.
Only yesterday he tweeted
“negotiating with several team …news soon.”
Benayoun made only 10 appearances for Chelsea last season, but of course he was out of action for six months with an Achilles tendon injury, and he’ would get lots of playing time on Tyneside.
But we’d be very surprised if this story has much truth to it, simply because the player is 31 years old.
But he is also a good and skillful player who can score goals, and Newcastle were linked with him before he finally went to West Ham back in 2005, when Graeme Souness was the Newcastle manager .
Yossi could do a job for a couple of years on Tyneside.
What do you think?
