We don’t know exactly what’s happening at Newcastle right now , but with less than seven hours to go in this summer transfer window, we assume they are working very hard to bring in a new striker.
Nolan Roux – is this player good enough?
It seems that Papiss Demba Cisse is a no go because his German club SC Freiburg will not sell, and we suppose Newcastle are seeing if they can tie up a deal for Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga, but that doesn’t look too good either.
There’s always Frederico Macheda of Manchester United to fall back on we suppose, if they cannot sign a good striker outright today, but they will take some heat if they fail to bring in a new striker today
We also mentioned earlier today that Belgium International striker, 23 year-old Marvin Ogunjimi, who is at Genk, is a possible option too.
But if those deals cannot be struck another option for Newcastle may be to go after Nolan Roux of French club Stade Brest, before the transfer window closes.
There’s some news being reported by The Transfer Tavern that Newcastle have switched their interested now to Roux, but we have no idea how much truth is in this story.
The 23-year-old has scored 23 goals in 62 appearances for Roux since he signed for them in 2009 from French lower league club Beauvais.
But when you look more closely at his record at Brest, 15 of those goals came while he was playing in the French second division, and he has yet to score in four French league games this season.
The news is also that Newcastle were not independently interested in the player, but that Brest offered him to Newcastle about a week ago, and that’s never a good sign.
So it seems that if Newcastle cannot get Cisse or Maiga, they probably shouldn’t bother, and should take Macheda on loan and take the heat for failing to replace Andy Carroll after three months of the transfer window, and that heat will have been well earned by Newcastle.
But hey, we’re still hoping – tick tock tick tock tick tock …
And if Sebastien Bassong is really available for £2M, then it could be money well spent to bring him back to Newcastle, to bolster our paper thin defensive options, and we would have still earned £6M over two years, since we sold him to Spurs.
And after all he was this blog’s Player of The Season in our relegation season, and his only season at Newcastle, with over 60% of the vote.
What do you think?

Comment #9I’d rather buy quality even if it means waiting until January.
Although the club really has no excuse leaving it this late.
Ba & Best in front of HBA … better than 7-8M unproven 4/5th choice French strikers.
Still p!ssed off about the 35M though.

Comment #13i would rather not get anyone than Macheda or some one no better than what we have – i know we have very little but i would perservere with Best over some of the recent names mentioned.
Macheda doesnt do it for me like – i think thats what we most likely end up with though unfortunatley.
He as done nothing since he burst onto the scene with winning goal against Villa i think

Comment #16If Cisse does actually does want to join, should we take any other strikers?
Would people be happy with taking a decent striker on loan instead until January?

Comment #17h8 to admit it but signing no striker will make our transfer window mediocre….question remains who will score the goals…?
loan of nothing but this is poor philosophy as man agree leaving the main MAN last on the transfer window insane…
