Newcastle have completed the signing of 25 year-old Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot, after he completed a medical on Tyneside last night.
Rob Elliot – Newcastle’s new number three goalkeeper (?)
The 25-year-old 6’3″ goalkeeper has signed a five-year deal with Newcastle, and becomes the club’s seventh signing of the summer, after following Inter Milan left back Davide Santon through the door last night on Tyneside.
Elliot made 109 appearances for Charlton Athletic, and has also spent time on loan at Bishop’s Stortford, Notts County and Accrington Stanley.
With Fraser Forster out on loan to Celtic for the season, Elliot will bolster the goalkeeping department at St. James’ Park, and he had this to say after signing:
“I am looking forward to the challenge of joining a club like Newcastle United.”
“This is a huge club and a huge opportunity for me to learn from two of the best keepers in the division.”
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was Charlton manager when Elliot was at Charlton back in late 2006 through 2008, and he had this to say last night after the signing of his former goalkeeper:
“The goalkeeping position is one we felt we needed to strengthen.”
“Rob is an excellent keeper who I have worked with before, and I know he will be a good signing for the Club.”
Charlton Athletic last week were unhappy at the Newcastle approach for their goalkeeper, and reported the Magpies to the Barclays Premier League, but it seems the bad feelings between the clubs have now gone, and the deal was completed successfully.
No fee was disclosed but we expect it was around £300K.
We have to think that Fraser Forster’s time at Newcastle will likely now come to and end when he finishes his loan spell at Celtic next May, and Forster will likely sign full time for the Scottish giants at that time.
And Alan Pardew is now hoping to sign a striker before tomorrow night’s transfer deadline, with Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga still the number one target.
However, Socahux President Alexandre Lacombe has said he will not let Maiga join Newcastle unless a replacement is first secured by the French club.
And last night St. Etienne beat Sochaux to the signing of Leeds United winger Max Gradel, so we’re not sure it Newcastle can sign Maiga within the next 24 hours, although he would bean excellent signing for the club.
Newcastle are however favorites to sign Manchester United striker Federico Macheda on loan for the season.
