Newcastle Complete Seventh Signing Of The Summer

Newcastle have completed the signing of 25 year-old Charlton goalkeeper Rob Elliot, after he completed a medical on Tyneside last night.

Rob Elliot – Newcastle’s new number three goalkeeper (?)

The 25-year-old  6’3″ goalkeeper has signed a five-year deal with Newcastle, and becomes the club’s seventh signing of the summer, after  following Inter Milan left back Davide Santon through the door last night on Tyneside.

Elliot made 109 appearances for Charlton Athletic, and has also spent time on loan at Bishop’s Stortford, Notts County and Accrington Stanley.

With Fraser Forster out on loan to Celtic for the season, Elliot will bolster the goalkeeping department at St. James’ Park, and he had this to say after signing:

“I am looking forward to the challenge of joining a club like Newcastle United.”

“This is a huge club and a huge opportunity for me to learn from two of the best keepers in the division.”

Newcastle manager Alan  Pardew was Charlton manager when Elliot was at Charlton back in late 2006 through 2008,  and he had this to say last night after the signing of his former goalkeeper:

“The goalkeeping position is one we felt we needed to strengthen.”

“Rob is an excellent keeper who I have worked with before, and I know he will be a good signing for the Club.”

Charlton Athletic last week were unhappy at the Newcastle approach for their goalkeeper, and reported the Magpies to the Barclays Premier League, but it seems the bad feelings between the clubs have now gone, and the deal was completed successfully.

No fee was disclosed but we expect it was around £300K.

We have to think that Fraser Forster’s time at Newcastle will likely now come to and end when he finishes his loan spell at Celtic next May, and Forster will likely sign full time for the Scottish giants at that time.

And Alan Pardew is now hoping to sign a striker before tomorrow night’s transfer deadline, with Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga still the number one target.

However,  Socahux President Alexandre Lacombe has said he will not let Maiga join Newcastle unless a replacement is first secured by the French club.

And last night St. Etienne beat Sochaux to the signing of Leeds United winger Max Gradel, so we’re not sure it Newcastle can sign Maiga within the next 24 hours, although he would bean excellent signing for the club.

Newcastle are however favorites to sign Manchester United striker Federico Macheda on loan for the season.

    Absolutely awful signing…

    or

    Amazing keeper!

Doesn’t seem to be any middle ground on this blog. You’re either a ‘negger’ or an ‘Ashley bummer’.

Sad times when fellow fans resort to childish name calling.

Elliot? Harper may be off after all. Regarding Santon, Good news but slightly worrying. Santon was obviously not our first choice LB. Much cheaper than Cissokho and a little cheaper than Pieters. Coincidence??? Hope he proves to be a good signing like. Hopefully won’t turn out to be injury prone. Still need a ST and a CB and a RM.

TDS there is also a realist tag that is used on both sides of the extreme ‘negging’ and ‘chubby chassers’ i just think both sides have different view points what annoys me though is the lack of actual debate instead it is just quarreling and name calling

  • kevymartins, It’s getting less and less likely that we will get relegated and they won’t be able to say “told you so”.

If we’d gone into the season with only 2 senior keepers, one of whom is injured, we’d all be slagging the club off for poor planning….

For once I have to say well done to whoever is actually in charge of transfer.

I feel indifferent about most signings unless they prove themselves. Elliot is pretty much only cover, and in he coming years I have a feeling we won’t be seeing too much of him on the pitch.

Santon though… Star player. Not seen him play before, but he’s world class on any football game you can play ;D I hope tomorrow for a striker, don’t care how much, don’t care how little.

TDS haha true mate! I don’t get the mail. If our second choice costs more than our first choice and we are willing to pay £10m for him what on earth are we doing with the bid for our supposed first choice target. Just offer £1m more. Daft from the board

Great to see another keeper in – people underestimate this position soooo much, but a good keeper is difference between a good and a great team.

Can’t believe some people are saying why?!??! Then moan that ashley never spend any money!?!?!?

    Welcome aboard son!

I just hope that there’s something about this Maiga kid. I haven’t seen him play, but the Frenchies don’t seem to rate his ability or his attitude :/

I really hope that we’re so determined to get him because he’s got something that Pardew/Carr can see, and not just because he’s cheap-ish and actually wants to sign for us.

Wouldn’t surprise me if bidding 10m for Cisse is us saying to Sochaux – “Sell now or we’ll move on”

spuggy – in fairness I don;t think goalkeeper no.4 is most people’s priority.. other areas more important.. if it’s because harper wants first team elsewhere then fair do’s… just hope it’s not to pave the way for a Krul sale horror tomorrow… yee neva know with porky pie man.

Let’s just hope we get a quality pacey striker who can play off Ba/Best/Ameobi. The perfect scenario would be to get Maiga/Cisse and Macheda in, as well as that Situ.
You’s heard about Ruiz going to Fulham? Looks like Dempsey might be off after all.. I know I’m dreaming but I would love to see him at the Toon!
