Newcastle were linked with Freiburg’s Papiss Demba Cisse on Monday, and there is news this morning that Newcastle are trying to sign the Senegal International striker today.
Papiss Demba Cisse – Newcastle back in for striker
The Daily Mail is reporting that not only were Newcastle interested in the striker, but Newcastle bid £10M for him on Monday, but his German club turned down the bid.
The news yesterday is that it could be difficult to bring Modibo Maiga to Newcastle from Sochaux, because the French club will not sell unless they can get a replacement in today, but that will be difficult after they missed out to St. Etienne last night for Leeds’ Max Gradel.
Newcastle are after a top striker who can wear the famous number 9 shirt vacated by Andy Carroll, and the news is that Newcastle will go back in for the Senegal striker today with an increased bid.
However, news from Sky Sports this morning says that SC Freiburg will resist any deal today.
Since joining SC Freiburg in 2009 from Metz, the 26 year-old 6′ striker has scored 34 goals in 43 appearances for the Bundesliga side, and could join another Senegal International striker already on Tyneside, Demba Ba.
Marvin Ogunjimi of Genk
And the Mail is reporting that if they cannot get Papiss Demba Cissé today, Newcastle will make a move for Genk and Belgium International striker Marvin Ogunjimi in a £5M bid.
The Genk player has been interesting Fulham, but the London side seem to be after a loan deal for Marseille’s Andre Pierre Gignac, and a £10M deal for FC Twente’s Bryan Ruiz, which Sky Sports reported last night was close to completion.
The 23 year-old Belgium born striker Ogunjimi has played four times for Belgium, and would appear to be Newcastle’s third choice after Maiga and Papiss Demba Cisse.
But it also seems that Newcastle are determined to bring in another striker today.
Nothing like leaving things to the last minute, but we still hope they can get the business done.
