Leon Best, Newcastle’s Irish International striker, has come out today and told Newcastle fans he will get the job done for Newcastle and get the goals we need.
Leon Best – yes – another goal from Leon on Sunday
And with Newcastle’s rather feeble and pathetic attempts to buy a top striker on the cheap yesterday, failing quite miserably, we have to rely on Leon, Demba Ba, Peter Lovenkrands and Shola Ameobi to get the job done for Newcastle, at least until January.
We are fairly confident that those four players will not let the side down, and in particular we think Leon Best could well make a name for himself too, if he can stay clear of injuries.
Leon Best seems determined to prove himself again as a striker, who can get goals in the Premier League for Newcastle:
“That’s all you can do.” “If the manager gives me a chance I will take it.”
“After the Fulham game I couldn’t wait for the next game against Queens Park Rangers, we just wish it was tomorrow.”
“I think if you want to go off my starts in the Premier League it is almost one goal every two games.”
“That sounds very good but I want to add on that. I am obviously looking forward to the next few games. We are in the top six now so why shouldn’t we be as players?
“It’s been a great start for us.”
Leon is right about his goal ratio because we make it 15 appearances this year in the Premier League have resulted in 8 goals, and you cannot do much better than that.
Best should be in the starting line-up for the game against QPR a week come Monday, and although QPR have strengthened their side in the transfer window this summer, there has to be a good chance that Newcastle can get a win at Loftus Road.
Leon, who has a total of 28 appearances for Newcastle with eight goals and turns 25 later this month, continued:
“Whenever the question is asked I will try to answer them with goals. I think that’s what I want to keep doing.” “I am giving the manager a headache by doing it.”
“It’s a sweet feeling.” “I always look back to my first Premier League goals against West Ham, I didn’t think I’d get that feeling again. But it was there in the last game.”
“I have had chances here and there but I need starts. Sometimes I have not been fully fit. But now I have my chance.”
And the Coventry-born player who has 7 caps for Ireland, has confidence in his own abilities, and we back Leon to be in the goals for Newcastle for the rest of this year.
What Newcastle will do in January we have no idea, but that is a difficult window to bring in new players, because they have no time to settle in and get acclimatized to their new clubs.
But we suppose there be some PR about spending money in January, but we’ll believe it when and if it happens, but we’re not holding our breath.
The club had a chance to spend big money in the summer for some excellent players, but they didn’t do that and the net transfer outlay for the summer was about zero, zilch, nothing.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41Sad Sad times. As keegan said, MAknows nothing about football and DL even less.
Proved it yet again. If you can’t buy a decent striker in this window you have absolutely NO CHANCE in January.
This regime are not interestedin any real success because there hearts are not in the club. If MA was a true supporter he would want to invest – who wouldn’t albeit sensibly (no probllem with that). But to not reinvest the AC money to take us to the next level (or even 20 mill of it) is sheer ludicrasy.
Mid-table mediocraty and relegation scraps are the future.

Ashley will never do right in some of your eyes, utterly pathetic it really is.
So he’s made mistakes, you’re not allowed to make mistake then? Get over yourselves.
Those of you who think we’ve done poorly in the transfer window are in my opinion idiots.
JUST because we didn’t get in a player that cost 10+ million to wear our #9 shirt – the club suddenly lacks ambition? Behave.
Is it really in MA ‘s interest to screw the club over?
Do you not think that in the business world, MA’s business partners etc KNOW about NUFC? Surely he’ll want to make it look as GOOD AS POSSIBLE as it is, afterall, his business?
So we are now heading towards a sound financial setting and wont be held to ransom anymore by ruthless agents and greedy players (Michael Owen).
This is surely GOOD!!!???
I have faith in the current playing staff to at least achieve a better placing than last year. We have a very decent platform to build on and I for one am thrilled with the way our club is moving.
Yes it’s a shame we didn’t get in a new striker, it’s always exciting to get a new striker in but we will at some point.
We only have to battle the next 4 months without a new number 9.
Besides, let’s say we spent millions on a new #9 – who’s to say they wouldn’t flop either?! Then there’d be even more moanings and groanings, probably directed at Carr because all of a sudden he’d know ‘naff all about players’…
Good god, wake up, get a grip and SUPPORT YOUR CLUB by getting to the ground and roaring the players on. We’ll be pushing for a Euro spot this season I believe and I also believe we (the fans) can make a significant difference to where the palyers finish.
So get off Ashley’s back, I’m not won over by him by any stretch but he’s running the club sensibly and fair play to him.

Comment #52Neither Ba or Best are good enough to play in a 4-5-1 system but together they could form a decent partnership, neither will have the lethal touch of a berbatov or the sublime craftsmanship of a rooney but with a decent team behind them they can find themselves in the goals.
Neither will make a name for themselves, but they will be adored by the fans for giving 100% and we ca’t ask for more than that!!!

You miss the point. Most fans would agree we’ve bought some great players for next to nothing and are reasoably happy with the squad, and the sensible investment in youth.
What we’re not happy with is the constant lies and subsequent dissapointments – how many players and managers do you have to hear it from? Keegan, Hughton, Enrique, Barton, Carroll etc.
These people are not interested in the club as the fans are – they have no heart in it. They just want to turn a profit on the bare minumum. Souless.
I personally want an owner who is passionate about the club. What is wrong with that?

Comment #64Can I also add that out of the strikers that moved clubs yesterday, who would you have had wearing our number 9????
Crouch, Bentner, Bellamy, Ruiz?
Maybe Ruiz, maybe, but he’s another who is UNPROVEN…
You all cry out for someone but our last number 9 was Carroll who we saw grow into a number 9.
Before that it was Shearer who was very much PROVEN and we paid a then WORLD RECORD fee for him…we wont do that now, obviously.
All of the names being banded about yesterday were ALL unproven and mostly from France.
Carr has another 4 months to find another list of suitable players…
You want a proven 15+ goal a season striker to wear our #9 – what, realistically our your options?

I don’t get it:
“i think Ashley now only has two choices one is to start investing in the squad properly and i dont mean a 30 million pound striker just sign the players that we need as we need them or”
When is “now” ?
Now was the last 2.5 months no? Now was in January. Now what? Wait until the next window? And all the fans should sit and wait again? What are saying mate, I really don’t get it.

Comment #72for me the key to all this is Ben Arfa – to accommodate him in the starting eleven last time Guittierez was benched, which surely can’t be a good idea again – when he is back Pardew has stated he plans to play benny up front, so why pay a fortune for another forward when you have such a quality player ( albeit fragile! ) due back so soon?

Comment #74Spuggy, no, I do get the point mate but I just hate the negativity.
I’d love it if Ashley suddenly looked at his bank account and thought, “shit me, do I really need over 1 billion?” maybe I should spend just 50 million of it on 2 world class players for my pride and joy, nufc”
It AINT GONNA HAPPEN!!!
Ashley always said he bought the club so he could get others to run it and just turn up on a Saturday to watch a match.
He wants the club to run on a sound financial base, that is ASHLEY’s passion showing through.
He will get that the fans want big name signings but he’s not gonna just spend stupid money we haven’t got because he must want to run the club as a successful business and see it run in a financially sound manner LONG TERM.
If he ran the club using the same passion of most fans, i.e heart before head, we’d be still buying players like Michael Owen, Albert Luque and so on…
Ashley is clearly VERY passionate about NUFC, he clearly DOES CARE but he wont simply waste millions on players JUST BECAUSE the fans want it, dear god.

————————————–
Edd Case:”JUST because we didn’t get in a player that cost 10+ million to wear our #9 shirt – the club suddenly lacks ambition? Behave.”
Answer: The point is not the money that was or wasn’t spent. It is the player/s that were/weren’t brought in. Also, there were promises. If they would come out (at all) and say – the money for Carroll is not going back into the transfer window but into other things we need to take care of in the club – then at least they wouldn’t lie. Where is that money then? The lying part is the worst thing.
—————————————-
Edd Case:”Is it really in MA ‘s interest to screw the club over?”
Answer: Probably not, but he is not showing otherwise. He acts like he knows better then anyone else. He should bring a chairman who knows what he is doing.
———————————-
Edd Case:”We only have to battle the next 4 months without a new number 9.
Besides, let’s say we spent millions on a new #9 – who’s to say they wouldn’t flop either?!”
Answer: No one is promising you that there will be a new striker in January. And yeah, he could be a flop, then lets not buy any player ever, any of them can be a flop.
—————————————-
Edd Case: “Good god, wake up, get a grip and SUPPORT YOUR CLUB by getting to the ground and roaring the players on”
Answer: In general, you are right. Need to support the club and the players. But there is also time to support the future and not only the present. The only way the fans can do it is not coming to the games, showing that not spending that extra 2-3 millions will cost the owner more.
Also, criticizing is not contradicting support. People care for the future of the club, that is why they are worried. That is the highest level of support, people are involved emotionally in this club and not only as a source of entertainment for the weekend.

Obe won’t play a striker for most of the season.
Not the lack of strikers, the quality of them.
