Newcastle Could Return For Maiga And Pieters In January

Newcastle have an opportunity right now to line up some deals to be completed in January.

Modibo Maiga – to arrive in January?

According to the Journal today, Newcastle were very close to landing Modibo Maiga on Wednesday from French club, Sochaux.

Derek LLambias was all ready to board a helicopter in London to do the deal in France, but Sochaux pulled the plug late on Wednesday afternoon, and with no real explanation to Newcastle.

Newcastle were also close to landing Erik Pieters of PSV a week ago, and in both cases the club was  close to negotiating a fee with their respective clubs.

So why not do those deals now, get something signed, but agree the fee and execute the actual deals on January 1st.

Get something in writing in the next week, even it if means Newcastle raising their bids a little, to secure two very good players on January 1st.

Of course it’s much better to sign players early in the summer, since it gives them time to bed down at their new clubs, before the season starts.

And there are lots of examples of good players who don’t show up well in the season when they are signed in January, with Kevin Nolan at Newcastle and Edin Dzeko of Manchester City, being two good examples of that.

Presumably Newcastle know what they have to do to secure both Maiga and Pieters, and they could then get the job done in January.

And Pieters would still be a good buy, because Davide Santon can play right back, or even in midfield, and the defense certainly needs strengthening.

Come to think of it they could also bring in the experienced Liam Ridgewell  from Birmingham City while they are at it, and send Nile Ranger the other way to help out Chris Hughton.

There you go, three good players to arrive on January 1st – it’s so easy.

Pieters may even be cheaper then. Fair play not paying the asking price for him when his contract is up at the end of this year.

It’s similar to if we’d asked for £10m for Jose.

im pretty sure we can scrape by with the forwards we have, the annoying thing is the lies that comes out of more worried about the lack of defenseve cover. is anyone out there out of contract who could do a job in that department. on the number 9 shirt we have had some world class numer 9s in the past, but remember the likes of rafferty clarke rob mcdonald etc, think what im saying is doesnt realy matter about shirt number only yo us geordies if you have a good striker you usualy have a good team. time will tel.

Maiga was all agreed everything, we agreed a fee with Sochaux and agreed terms with him agent Llambias was ready to fly over so he could sign on the dotted line, but sochaux pulled the plug again, am sure he’s going to like that

What rationale is used by the people who trash Ba and Best? I can understand the lack of confidence in Shola but the other 2? Sure,Leon isnt the flashiest most skillful, exotic name striker but he sticks the ball in the net and grafts for the team. 8 in 13 starts aints no coincidence! Demba Ba is just settling in AND has been fasting, judge him in January atleast. If Torres stil gets starts and support why not our own? HWTL

if he really wants to leave and only has 2 years left he should just buy out the remaining 2 years as he’s allowed and then he’s on a free transfer and we can give him couple million signing on fee..
but if he does that make sure he comes out and says what he’s going to do before he does it so we dont get reported again for tapping up..

I agree – Ba should not be judged on a couple of games. If we did that we’d say sell colo and enrique in the first season.

Even less chance of signing Pieters in Jan than last week.
Unless we have a serious injury crisis, why would any club (let alone one in massive debt) pay money in Jan for someone on a free in June?

    100% agree Klatoon.

Senseless in most ways that they are being doubted given their records.

Fair enough they have played few games but they have both shown that they appear to be consistent.

Would have liked a new striker/attacking player to go on the right too but without one, unless these boys flop I don;t see why they shouldn’t be given a chance.

    Is Maiga that good?

Can’t we go back in for Cisse?

There really is no excuse they didn’t buy, they had eight months.
    Silly penny pinching.
It’s the fans that suffer because we don’t have the players in the squad.
It’s the fans too that pay to watch.

    Time they realised that.

I just wish Ashley would sell.

GeordieToon89, good shout that, pretty sure that’s what happened with Jonas?

I also agree that we will get by, when you look at other teams and squads we could finish around the 10th mark, and improve on last year when our “big players” were still here. The frustration is that a rapid striker who can make runs and ease pressure might just have been enough for us to threaten the top 7 or 8.

By the way, from the 3 games played we have 7 points. Those fixtures last year gave us 3 points. 3 draws. 4 points ahead already. If we beat QPR and move onto 10 points then we would be in super shape. Even another draw would see us remain unbeaten half way through September!!!!!

  • GeordieToon89, you should tell Ashley and Llambias about your suggestion @ 9. I’m sure the both of them are sly and sneaky enough to send him the money to buy himself out.

Don’t think we really need another free-agent forward.

    I think we do need a free-agent centre-half.

    NUFC_Richyg01 – No deal.

Diouf is a complete arsehole, red card waiting to happen and not a great goal scorer. (We’ve just got rid of Barton…)

Beattie has flopped at all of the clubs he’s been at recently hence why he is now free.

    He’s like Kuqi!

Id take a punt on Beattie if I was in charge. Better than the punt we took on Kuqi.

And to add insult to injury, we’d got rid of Barton with nobody really coming in for his replacement. (Arguably Obertan/)

Without him there, we would have made the money back on signing him within 2 months AND been able to pay his wages with that too probably for at least half a year!

James mcfadden is also free I think? Younger and more versatile than Beattie/Diouf. Isnt Tavernier on a short loan,1 month? Can provide cover at the back.

One of the reason MA aell high earners is because its a lot easier to sell the club. He has regret it since he bouht the ckub since paid a lot more then he should in debts etc.Its the same Man City have to do if they are tured of pumping out silly money. They need to cut salary to get to sell the club. Not easy to get owners with the heart for the club, but hopefully theres one out there

That was crazy letting him Situ slip through our fingers.

Heard he wanted guarantees of first team football, another rumour that he wanted a buy-out clause in his contract.

We’re not stupid though epecially with our youth set up.
If he was even nearly decent, we would have kept him. There must be something in it.

I have a lot of faith in our club and contravesially our owner too that they will not make mistakes with players and transfers.

If he wanted those in there then the commitment to the club and programme is wrong and we rightly let him go… To Swansea!

    We’ll find someone else…

Let’s forget about Miaga. We should go straight back for Cisse on a pre contract so on first day of window we get it done.
No doubt it is very entertaining and frustrating do do deals on the final day of the window but we are building for the future so why wait, we identify the target then on first day sign them. After all look at the deals we did earlier in the last window . We are a professional club ? let’s act like one not like a bunch of amateurs !!! Then the future will be bright so no more lies and proper lines of communication you have the money you are the owners but the club is ours without us there is no NEWCASTLE UNITED.

Sorry been lied to enough by the owner.
Gave him a second chance this summer and the broken promises continue.

I hope he builds a successful club and a winning team but I’ll always dislike them for the lies.
I’ll never trust a thing they say.

    No third chance.

I just wish he’d sell up.

I have a lot of faith in our club and contravesially our owner too that they will not make mistakes with players and transfers – I was referring to the players we bring in/let go.

£35million for Carroll is stupid money. Look at Stoke, they’ve just paid how much for Crouch?

Would rather have Best+Ba and be in our situation than spending £10m+ on that.

Yes, we have no number 9 at our club but like I said yesterday:

    Torres (used to be anyway!)
van Persie (If he stayed fit)

Can’t think of anyone else that will give us this 20 goals a season?

Players like that are SO rare it’s much more worth spreading the risk/goals around the team like I think we have done.

If we had Carroll, we would still be looking for another striker back up striker now and be in a similar situation as most people still I’m sure wouldn’t be happy with Ba+Best.

Wonder what people would say if by 30 games in the PL they had both outscored Carroll whilst playing for weaker teams?

we did not sign Situ because his parent club wanted £250,000 plus a sell on fee, so how much are we likely to make from him now, hope he now goes to city for £50m to teach fat slob, honestly all those that think he’s a fantastic businessman, he’s a bully that spits his dummy out all the time, great at child exploitation though, £1.50p for a days hard labour, Ashley’s Fagan in disguise, Charles Dickens would sue the fat slob for breach of his intellectual copyright.
