Will Newcastle Go After This Available Striker?

There is news in Metro today that Newcastle may be interested in free agent striker James Beattie.

James Beattie – while at Rangers last season

33 year-old James Beattie seems to have lost his way over the last few years, and he was unable to earn a first team place at Stoke City, after joining them from Sheffield United in the summer of 2009.

Beattie was a Newcastle target of Bobby Robson,. back in the days when he was doing well at Southampton, and in 235 appearances for the south coast club he hit a decent 76 goals, but from what we can tell, the striker has been on a rapid decline over the last two or three years.

In two seasons at Stoke from 2008 through 2010 he made 40 appearances and scored 9 goals before joining Glasgow Rangers last summer.

But last season he failed to score in 10 appearances for the Scottish giants, and was sent out on loan to Blackpool from January, and  he failed to score in 9 appearances for the Seasiders.

In August of last year James signed a two year deal at Rangers with an option of a third year, but after failing to make the side and having lots of injuries last season, Rangers terminated his contract last Wednesday, and issued this statement:

“‘A deal has been agreed with Beattie which terminates his contract and makes him a free agent.”

If Newcastle do sign James Beattie it will look like a panic move, and we think we have four better strikers already at Newcastle in Demba Ba, Best, Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands, , and five if we include young Sammy Ameobi.

He’s just not good enough for Newcastle United.

What do you think?

Would not want him within 100 miles of the club , no point to signing him at all.

FFS! FAT BSTAD ASHLEY DOON GREGGS LIES LIES LIES, WHERES THE 35M, PARDEW PUPPET, GEEEEETTT OOOOOOT!

Ahem, thought I’d conform to what seems these days to be standard blog type, before I made a serious point.

I sincerly hope this is just paper speculation.

Kuki, Bridges, Sibierski… only the latter did anything of note and we were very short of forwards at the time.

I think we are in a different position today, as Ed states, all our forward options right down to the development squad are superior options to Beattie, so no thanks.

There’s more chance of me getting a game than Beattie ffs.
Why would we even give this nonsense credence its just not going to happen.

Ah well, that’s me in the firing line when FCB signs him up as our replacement striker!! Sorry guys.

Don’t worry Graeme, we’re more desperate for a couple of Centre halves than strikers.

We didn’t have one defender on the bench against Fulham.
    (Ferguson is really a LW).

Criminal way to run a Premier League football club.

Lovely if you can’t get to Greggs in Budapest. 🙂

Lads I’ve got a question for any football experts out there!!!!if a club and a player can agree just to terminate a contract why has no club tried to buy players outside of the window!!!!E.G.if Newcastle want to buy roux, say to Brest if Roux wants to come to Newcastle we will give u (brest) 10 mil to terminate his contract and then Newcastle sign him as a free agent??????

    @NUFC STEVE

Brest would have to pay his wages for the length of the contract and any loyalty payments due.

Could be very pricey if he’s got more than a year.

Even then it sounds dodgy enough for UEFA to block it.

Steve. We could only sign a player if his contract was terminated inside the transfer window. If a player terminated his contract today for example, then signed for a new club, he wouldn’t be able to play for his new team until January. What you described is actually a regular transfer

He seems to score for Finland.

His wiki says he had trials at West Ham & Leeds but no contract was offered.

Better than some names I’ve heard mentioned. (McFadden & Beattie)

We need a good CB free agent.
