When Newcastle were first quoted a fee on Yohan Cabaye about a year ago they were quoted £12M by his club Lille.
Yohan Cabaye – taken during the Sunderland game
So the fact that Newcastle found he had a release clause in his contract for £4.5M and brought him to Newcastle for that amount is very good business.
And 25 year-old Cabaye has looked the man for Newcastle in the first four games of the season, even as he tries to adjust to the faster and more physical nature of the game across the English Channel from France.
Cabaye has talked to the Newcastle press today:
“It was difficult to adjust to English football at first. I have had to adapt but the only way you can get more experience of it is by playing. That is how I will get better.”
“The Premier League is more physical and faster than French football. In France it’s more tactical – a lot of short passes. Here it’s different.” “Here there are no easy games. In France you have a few games where it’s easier – here, never!”
“The Premier League is famous for that. I made my debut against Arsenal and it was a very difficult game, even though I did the double in France.” “Then there was the derby, which was the best atmosphere I had ever played in. I really enjoyed it.”
“It was totally different to playing in France. Even playing for the national team, the atmosphere is very different.” “Now I understand better what it means to be a Newcastle United player.”
“After the game I wanted to thank the fans, because they were fantastic in the derby. We really wanted to win that game for them and for us.” “It was most important to win against Sunderland.”
Cabaye has been a bit of a revelation on Tyneside since he arrived in the summer, as Newcastle’s very first buy in ealry June.
And Cabaye has quickly taken to the fans, and the Newcastle fans have taken to the French International too, and he’s had some good press for his performances for the side so far this season.
It will not be long before Yohan rifles in his first goal for Newcastle, because he’s adept at scoring, and while at Lille in 235 appearances for the French club, he scored a good 39 goals and also had around 35 assists.
We’re looking forward to the central midfield partnership of Cabaye and Tiote knitting together well, as they play more together as the season progresses.
And of course Yohan can play both the attacking or defending central midfield roles equally well, and that will be a huge plus for Newcastle this season.
This lad looks like he’s an excellent acquisition for Newcastle and a real bargain.
