Alan Pardew was at Switzerland’s St Jakob Park last night doing some scouting.
Alan Pardew at Switzerland – Bulgaria game last night
Switzerland beat Bulgaria 3-1, and Alan would have seen Swiss 19 year-old, Xherdan Shaqiri, score a hat-trick as Switzerland came from behind to beat Bulgaria.
The youngster plays for Basel, and has now scored 7 goals in the fourteen times he’s played for the Swiss, which is not a bad record at all.
And another player Newcastle have fancied for at least three years, since they watched him in the last European Championships, is Swiss striker Eren Derdiyok, who played the full game for Switzerland last night.
And another target Newcastle went after in the summer, and didn’t play last night because he’s still out injured, is 26 year-old midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta.
Both Derdiyok and Barnetta play for Bayer Leverkusen, who are in the European Champions League this season, after finishing second to Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga last season.
Eren Derdiyok – played the full game for Switzerland
Newcastle brought in free agent Shefi Kuqi earlier this year, after they had failed to bring in a replacement for Andy Carroll, which was really to make up the numbers more than anything.
But Alan Pardew is not thinking of doing the same thing this time, and we have to hope that Demba Ba, Leon Best, Peter Lovenkrands and the two Ameobi brothers can get the job done for Newcastle through the end of the year, but we’ll see.
It’s a great opportunity for those lads to show what they can do for Newcastle.
As far as who may be bought in during January we have no idea, but the club did some big scouting this year already for a striker, so why wouldn’t they pick one, and try to arrange a deal now to be completed in early January?
That seems to make big sense to us, but of course the scouting force led by Graham Carr, will be out through Christmas checking on the form of the players, and there may be some strikers the club missed in the summer, we suppose.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41Marv was on the bench in the 1 game we have played since Scunny, so not really gone anywhere, Ba looked better in his Cameo vs Fulham and will come good.
Elliott, well we needed another keeper as Harper seems to be suffering with his knees and Forster wanted to be first choice. Obertan, well yeah has been average so far but has shown glimpses that he can be a good winger.
Santon could turn out to be a great signing going off what I have seen of him before.

I am sure you were disappointed, after all you were adamant that the players would be signed. So much so that you called me a negger on numerous occasions for saying they wouldnt!
Im I correct?
So with this in mind, do you need to ask yourself if Im actually a ‘negger’ or just a realist and has a fair opinion on passed performances, the way i think things are gonna go? I mean after all…who was right?

We signed 7 players man, or did u not read about that?
We lacked a CB and Striker.
I’d still take the CB over the striker due to lack of depth, which will hurt us more than signing Ba.
Read your own posts, it’s not about realism, it’s about the shit u post on this blog. Every single time u’re full of it, and every single time someone pounces u cause u’re full of it.
What u’re saying is not realism, it’s called being a big fat bully that no one likes.

I think Angryfan brings comedy to this blog by saying such things as “my gaff in Cyprus”.
And I really do think he wants us to lose so he can complain. Just like he didn’t want us to sign a striker because complaining makes him happy. Some people are like that.

Comment #54Otters/ Dannyo – The reason I lose patience with the apologists, and have done all summer is this:
The arguments AGAINST whilst maybe repeating the negatives, are all based on reality- things that have happened. The arguments FOR are based on speculation – ‘this player WILL come good, we WILL be OK,’ etc ‘..
I like optimism, but reading what you or other individuals THIINK will be the goal tallies of players with no track record in this league or at this level, is neither here nor there.
We all support the team on match day, that’s a given. We can say what the hell we want about the state of things on here – opinions based on reality – not best case scenario predictions, carry a lot more credibility.

Comment #55I was never adamant anyone would be brought in, all i said all along was that I would not judge the window until it was closed.

Being a “negger” or not being “negger”, i don’t care.
What i do care about is keeping things civil, without going overboard.
I’ve done that too, but i try not to, i’m not saying “be perfect or gtfo”, i realise we all make mistakes, and i’ve made more of my share too.
But when Angryman posts, it’s just so borderline silly and provocative, that i actually think he does this JUST to rile people up.
The man seem not to care the very least about NUFC. The way he goes off on people is completely and utterly out of line, i don’t get how he’s allowed to keep posting.
He’d be the first person a moderator would remove from any forum.
As a response to what u said:
Aye, more than fair that u base your arguments on what has happened.
But u cannot possibly think that we can only base things on that, why even bother posting then?
I think i’ve yet to call anyone a negger, cause i try to avoid branding people. Allot of people can change oppinion when given a fair and civilized reasoning.
All of us has seen that happen.
But don’t go saying “i base all i say on facts”, cause no one knows what will happen in the future.
People said we wouldn’t sign anyone after the 4th signing, then we signed Obertan, people said we won’t sign anyone after Obertan, then we signed Santon, then we signed Elliott.
Then people said “we won’t sign a striker” and they were right.
Given 7 players in, and 4 players out in the summer window, and our current 7 points + moving on in the Carling cup.
I’d say i’m more right than those claiming me being a “Ashley lover”, just cause i choose to be optimistic about the future when i find that there is reason to.
Am i wrong?

The window was neither great or bad, we lost a couple important players and did not sign that elusive striker, but we also made some good signings without having to pay great sums for them.
So it was down the middle of the ‘neggers’ and the ‘pro’s’.
Neither view was realistic.
Alot of people on here were in neither camp and were just waiting to see what happened.

He’s a tidy bit richer than what u are for one.
He’s established and continues to work on a good youth setup. There, i defended him in one aspect.
I take it you have every right to lash out on me now for something thats a FACT.

I go into every single game trying to predict a result..
‘we should win this’
‘be happy with a point’
‘not expecting anything but a good show’
i would have been happy with 4 points out of first three games, i wont lie, i expected defeat off arsenal, who are very poor at the minute actually, a draw with the scum would have been great…but we deserved all three,
We should beat teams like fulham at home!!
To say the team have done great and well beyond my expectations is fantastic, but i also look at it from this point of view…..the players in the team have played superb….as did Blackpools last term…..once teams suss, cabaye, HBA when he’s back and they will, can we sustain this form??? what about january, when the t/window opens and ‘the teams we cant compete with financially decide to start sniffing around Cabaye? HBA? Tiotie’ dont be so blinkered to think fat lad wants to keep these players, he WILL sell if an ‘acceptable’ offer is placed on the table. Look at history…….i did before last T/Window!!
I know for a fact the shallow folk out there who think the NUFC is a business rather than a football club will say he’s off agaion. NEGGER
Theyre perogative. I see it is wanting my team to finish higher than last season, I want to see my team win a trophy, I want to see my team at least trying to break into the top ten….we will NEVER get there selling off our best players and keeping the dross because they are cheap!!
Ill back Newcastle united football team till the day I pop me clogs, but I will never back the board, the owner or even the Manager in place at the minute as they have done nothing but tell lie after lie after lie and disrespect and Exploit the real fans of nufc!!

Comment #80The signing of Santon is a case in point.. part of me sees the good reports and gets excited. On the other hand, he was shipped out to unfancied Cessana last season after a loss of form, and didn’t really perform there. He has also been relegated to the Italian under 21s. The cynic in me suspects he was really third choice, after Pieters and Cissohko and as usual, Ashley eyed the cheapest option citing ‘potential to blossom’ rather than delivering now as with the other two.
He was brought in to replace a fine player in Enrique, who was sold for even more to league rivals- how much more we don’t know. If he’s gets close to Enrique in 2 years I’ll take it.
Not to say he’s a bad signing at all.. but when people are using him to make the argument about our ambitious summer spree, I don’t buy it. At best a like-for-like – and I stress, at best.
