There’s a report out today that Newcastle went after Ranger’s striker Nikica Jelavic last Wednesday.
Nikica Jelavic – Rangers’ Croation striker
Jelavic is the player that Leicester City manager Sven Eriksson had bid over £6M for, but was unsuccessful in signing the player for the Championship club.
The 26 year-old Croation joined Rangers in August of 2010 in a £4M move from Rapid Vienna, and Nikica has scored 22 goals for Rangers in 36 games since that time.
But it’s hard to judge how good he is from that, with the SPL being a fairly low standard of football, and Rangers and Celtic always being so dominant and scoring lots of goals.
The 6’2″ tall Jelavix has played 13 times for Croatia with two goals, and in his career, which started at Hajduk Split in Croatia back in 2002, and has included stints with clubs Zulte Waregem (Belgium), as well as Rapid Vienna and Rangers he has scored 73 goals in 195 total appearances.
We don’t know if Newcastle went after this player on Wednesday, but it certainly seems like they went after almost every other striker available, so it could even have been true that the club made an inquiry to Rangers about the player.
We have no idea who Newcastle will go after in January, if anybody, but form all the strikers they went after last Wednesday, the one we like the most is Papiss Demba Cisse, the 26 year-old Senegal striker at SC Freiburg.
And from the comments of the German club in the last few days, it seems they would be willing to sell him to Newcastle for the right price, but they need time to bring in a replacement.
Of course the right price is likely to be more than Newcastle are willing to offer.
The striker Newcastle are probably favorites to sign in January, because the club seemed closest to signing him on the last day of the window last week, is Sochaux and Mali International striker Modibo Maiga, who turned 24 last Saturday.
