Newcastle Now Linked With Croation International Striker

There’s a report out today that Newcastle went after Ranger’s striker Nikica Jelavic last Wednesday.

Nikica Jelavic – Rangers’ Croation striker

Jelavic is the player that Leicester City manager Sven Eriksson had bid over £6M for, but was unsuccessful in signing the player for the Championship club.

The 26 year-old Croation joined Rangers in August of 2010 in a £4M move from Rapid Vienna, and Nikica has scored 22 goals for Rangers in 36 games since that time.

But it’s hard to judge how good he is from that, with the SPL being a fairly low standard of football, and Rangers and Celtic always being so dominant and scoring lots of goals.

The 6’2″ tall Jelavix has played 13 times for Croatia with two goals, and in his career, which started at Hajduk Split in Croatia back in 2002, and has included stints with clubs Zulte Waregem (Belgium), as well as Rapid Vienna and Rangers he has scored 73 goals in 195 total appearances.

We don’t know if Newcastle went after this player on Wednesday, but it certainly seems like they went after almost every other striker available, so it could even have been true that the club made an inquiry to Rangers about the player.

We have no idea who Newcastle will go after in January, if anybody, but form all the strikers they went after last Wednesday, the one we like the most is Papiss Demba Cisse, the 26 year-old Senegal striker at SC Freiburg.

And from the comments of the German club in the last few days, it seems they would be willing to sell him to Newcastle for the right price, but they need time to bring in a replacement.

Of course the right price is likely to be more than Newcastle are willing to offer.

The striker Newcastle are probably favorites to sign in January, because the club seemed closest to signing him on the last day of the window last week, is Sochaux and Mali International striker  Modibo Maiga, who turned 24 last Saturday.

What do you think?

Cant see us signing a striker in January like. Lambarse said he doesnt like dealing in the Jan market as prices get over inflated.

If we werent prepared to pay the prices in summer theres no way we’ll pay even larger ones in January.

Give up on Maiga. He’s no better than what we have. And Sochaux asked for double what he was worth. Freiburg did the same with Cisse but he’s a better bet.

@Penalty-Spot – You could be right mate.
It would be good if our current strikers could get the job done! – I still have faith 😀

Would we not go for a loan deal on a striker? or is that not going to happen?

Haha liam, that question has been answered a million times this morning.

Prem clubs cant loan players. Only way we could sign someone would be a free agent and they’re all sh1te.

    Stuart

Think if we do sign anyone it will be a player with only 6 months left on contract so maybe get cheaper.
Or we might sign 1/2 on pre agreements for them to sign in summer.

As I’ve stated before I agree with Phil. I don’t think Maiga improves on what we already have..i think if we had paid the 13 mill for Cisse early in the summer we would have bagged him easily…I think he will be closer to 20 million when January rolls around and we certainly won’t be paying that.

I just hope Best starts more regularly, I think he has the potential to really make an impact..Contrary to the bulk of opinion on here I have always liked Shola. He has scored a number of important goals and although we could have got more from him, its refreshing to have a player in the squad who has always expressed nothing but loyalty to the club during good times or bad.

Bottom line is the squad is at it is now and as I’ve said before we just need to be good supporters and get behind them. The most important thing is to lift the dark cloud that has followed this club around all summer. We all know well enough that when we are pulling together the club is ultimately more successful. The league is likely to be even more competitive than it was last year and with the games we have coming up that we can certainly win, we could find ourselves with some serious momentum.

I cant say I’m impressed with this one – if there’s anything in it. Croatia, Belgium, Austria and Scotland are not exactly the pinacle of football. Anyone remember the last player we bought from Rangers who looked good for them. Boumsong – dear me!
We need a 1 in 2 striker at least! One who has done it in a half decent league!
Cisse sounds like he could be the one but I haven’t seen much of him. MA will want to haggle too much though! Maiga sounds like a spoilt brat – do we really want that? Erdinc needs too much persuading.
No doubt we’ll have other candidates we’ve never heard much of in the coming months.
Because we’ve got money waiting to be spent, valuations will go up too. They need to identify the real striker targets now and begin negotiations asap!

The moment Erdinc starting messing us around I didn’t consider him as an option. I want a quality striker that wants to play for the club. Sounds simple I know…

We offer the asking price – then offer the player a pittance of a wage and bonus – player obviously turns down personal terms and the deal falls through. Club say we tried our best but he did not want to come.

Getting so bored of hearing this and that about different strikers. And to be honest none of them jump out and scream YES NEW #9 to me!

Lets just concentrate on what we have and bring the strikers we have forward with more starts and better training. Sammy, best and ba can do us proud – loverman and gangster can pi$$ off
