Steven Taylor has thankfully made a more than decent start to this season.
Steven Taylor – has had good start to the seaosn
And at least at the moment the 25 year-old is preferred to Mike Williamson as the central defensive partner to Newcastle’s new captain Fabricio Coloccini.
Mike Williamson is out injured at the moment, and when he broke his arm in training last May, Steven took full advantage of that opportunity, and scored a goal in each of the last three games of the season, and the Greenwich-born youngster also played very well.
Last season was a nightmare for the 25 year-old local lad, and Steven’s now starting to show some of the form he was in while younger, when he captained the England U21 side, and we have to hope he comes through for Newcastle big time this season.
Steven admits he’s just happy to be playing regularly again:
“I’m just happy to be playing – the more games you play, the more confident you get,” “Last season was frustrating for me with the injuries.”
“I got a little run at the end of the season, but now I’ve had a few games in pre-season, we got a great result against Arsenal, Sunderland and Fulham, and we’re doing OK.”
“We’ve got to build on that now and keep it going.” “It’s down to a lot of hard work,”
“The coaching staff and manager have been absolutely spot-on.” “I’ve been working hard – that’s all I can do. I’ve got to keep going.”
We still think that when Mike Williamson is fully fit he will challenge strongly for Steven’s position.
But central defense has to be one of Newcastle’s weak links in the team, because who comes in if Coloccini, Taylor and Williamson get injured?
With Hungarian Tamas Kadar seemingly missing his chance at Newcastle, the club may have to sign another experienced center-back in January.
If any of those three do get injured, Newcastle may have to play youngsters James Tavernier or Paul Dummett in there, and we wonder if new lad Davide Santon can play in central defense?
For the record Steven Taylor has played 197 times for Newcastle, since making he debut back in 2004 under then manager Bobby Robson, and he’s scored 13 goals.
What do you think about the central defense strength at Newcastle?

Is this monday or when everyone fit? Still think Jonas is a key member of the team, grafts his ar$e off, takes pressure off team by keeping ball, drags players out of position, just that final ball lets him down.

Comment #43Marveaux will get his chance but I’d have to include Jonas for the time being too.
Would you drop Ba or Best for Benny? I’d have to drop Ba, just on current form I think.

I rate both of them, I think given chances they will score.
Would play Best at moment tho, think he has proved when he has started he is a threat. I think he could get 15 this season if he plays enough

Comment #4615 from Best would be good, he could get more with the quality of supply he’s going to be getting and the amount of poaching he’ll be able to do.
