It turns out that Leon Best, who is one of Newcastle’s biggest hopes to hit the goals trail before January, is big on statistics.
Leon Best – can he get 20 goals for Newcastle this season?
And Leon so far has a great record in the Premier League of eight goals in just 16 Premier League appearances since the start of this year, although he had 13 appearances in the Championship with Newcastle the season before, without hitting any goals.
But at the beginning of this year it looked like Leon’s career was over on Tyneside, but he was then given a chance by new manager Alan Pardew, and he delivered with those 6 goals in just 12 appearances.
And this season he has hit two goals in four appearances so far, and it seems that one thing that held Best back when he first arrived on Tyneside, was a persistent ankle injury.
But it seems he has finally recovered from that and had a decent pre-season, and we have to hope Leon can keep scoring those goals.
Leon has talked about his love of stats:
“Stats are something I look at and study,” “When you see the best players in the world… the Brazilian Ronaldo is a hero of mine, I look at his stats and every team he’s been with, his goals-per-game ratio is unbelievable.”
“I know all my stats here, because the technical team is top notch. They give you a sheet after every game to let you know exactly what you’re doing, how many shots you’ve had, how far you’ve run, things like that.”
“I always keep track of my goals per-game-ratio, that’s the main stat and it’s always been the case my whole career, even right back to when I was a young kid.”
“Can I make it to 20 goals? That’s the big question. I hope I can. With no new strikers brought in, now I’ve been scoring, people might be looking at me thinking I should be doing just that.”
“It’s down to me and the other strikers now. There’s no 15 or 20 goal striker come in on deadline day, so it’s up to us.” “I believe this league is better for me. “
“I love every minute of playing in it and I truly believe I’m a Premier League player, even though I’m still trying to prove myself.”
24 year-old Best has scored 50 goals in 202 career appearances – so that’s around 0.248 goals per appearance.
This year he has a goals/appearance record of 0.50 since he’s hit 8 goals in just 16 appearances and in his Newcastle career overall, he’s hit 8 goals in 29 appearances for a ratio of 0.276, which is slightly better than his career average.
It seems to us he needs a couple of goals in tomorrow’s game and we’ll recalculate those stats for Leon – no problem.
The Ireland International striker is hoping he can score 20 goals this season for Newcastle, and if he does that, he’ll be worth a lot more than the £1M Newcastle paid Coventry for him in January of last year.
His Newcatsle manager Alan Pardew is more down to earth and knows that Leon is still learning the game, and can certainly improve:
“Leon’s goals-per-game ratio is impressive,” “He’s still learning and he still has a lot of improving to do before he becomes a recognised first teamer here.”
“At the moment though, he’s got the shirt and it’s down to him to keep it.”
Leon has another great chance right now to cement his place in the Newcastle starting line-up, and he’ll likely start for Newcastle at Villa Park tomorrow, and as we said earlier, a couple of goals would be very nice.
Very nice indeed.
