Alan Pardew – two Cups are high priority this season
Newcastle are through to the 3rd round of the Carling Cup tonight at Nottingham Forest, after beating Scunthorpe United 2-1 away, after extra time last month.
Nottingham Forest have had a dismal start to the season under new manager Steve McClaren, and are currently 3rd bottom of the npower Championship.
Alan Pardew is right when he says the best chance Newcastle have of winning a trophy are the two Cups:
“For us, winning the Premier League is a little bit out of reach, so it makes sense to try and win a cup,”
“That is what we are going to try and do, and it is a competition we feel we can do well in, but Nottingham Forest will have something to say about that, for sure.”
“I haven’t followed them, but they are a great club with a great manager and I’m sure that things will improve there quickly.”
“I can recall watching Brian Cloughie’s teams winning that trophy many, many times when I was a young boy, so they are a great club and it is always very difficult to go there and get a result.”
For the record Nottingham Forest won the old European Cup twice, when the famous Brian Cough was manager and was assisted by Peter Taylor,.
They won Europe’s top prize in successive years in 1979 and 1980, so the club have had great success, not too long ago.
They’ve won the League Cup four times in 1978, 1979, 1989, 1990, and the FA Cup twice in 1898 and 1959, and are one of England’s oldest clubs, being founded back in 1865 – I remember it well.
The club is going through a bad spell right now, but they will come back, but hopefully not tonight.
