Newcastle have a chance tonight to match what they did last year and get through to the 4th round of the Carling Cup.
Alan Pardew has said that the two cups are something that Newcastle can win this season, and of course we have no chance in the league, when the clubs at the top are spending money in the transfer market, like it’s going out of style.
Nottingham Forest have made a very poor start to the season under new manager Steve McClaren, and in the Championship they have won only one and drawn two of their first seven league games, and are third bottom of the league.
The Forest weakness is definitely their defense, and they have conceded 13 goals in those 7 games, and that’s where Newcastle’s chance is, if they can start by attacking Nottingham Forest, and hopefully expose their weakness.
But we don’t think this game will be easy, and even though on current form it looks like it should be an easy win for Newcastle, that’s not always how these games shape up.
Remember that Newcastle were completely outplayed in the first half at Scunthorpe United in the last round, and while the lads came back well in that second half, they still had the luck to get through.
And with any luck, Scunthorpe would have had more than that one goal at half time.
One other thing that worries us about this game is the makeup of the side, which will likely contain at least six changes from the side that did so well at Villa Park on Saturday, to get a good 1-1 draw.
There will be Rob Elliot in goal making his debut tonight, and other players like James Perch, Shane Ferguson, Dan Gosling and Sylvain Marvaux likely to get starts, and we will just have to hope the new-look side can gel quickly.
Its difficult to know exactly which team Alan Pardew will start tonight – but here’s one shot at the team:
Simpson Perch Taylor (S) (c) Ferguson
Gosling Guthrie Tiote Marveaux
Subs: Harper Coloccini Cabaye Abeid Ameobi (Sa) Lovenkrands Best
With Ben Arfa starting, we are assuming he will play in the withdrawn striker role behind a big man up front, which could be Demba Ba tonight.
As long as the lads can play well together as a team, that side should be enough to get the job tonight, but we’re a little bit uncertain about this game, and don’t think it is going to be as easy as it looks on paper.
Let’s hope the lads can start well and get at that Forest defense quickly.
Keys to the game tonight is another strong performance from the defense is needed, and some much needed creativity up front from players like Ben Arfa and Sylvain Marveaux, and maybe Demba Ba can get his first goal for the club tonight.
We are looking to get through this tie in the 90 minutes, and hope we don’t need extra time this time around.
That’s because we have to wallop Blackburn Rovers on Saturday afternoon, and who knows we could even go 3rd top of the league with a win on Saturday.
But first things first, and Newcastle must get through this game tonight.
Howay The Lads!!
