Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle – Match Preview

Newcastle have a chance tonight to match what they did last year and get through to the 4th round of the Carling Cup.

Alan Pardew has said that the two cups are something  that Newcastle can win this season, and of course we have no chance in the league,  when the clubs at the top are spending money in the transfer market, like it’s going out of style.

Nottingham Forest have made a very poor start to the season under new manager Steve McClaren, and in the Championship they have won only one and drawn two of their first seven league games, and are third bottom of the league.

The Forest weakness is definitely  their defense, and they have conceded 13 goals in those 7 games, and that’s where Newcastle’s chance is, if they can start by attacking Nottingham Forest,  and hopefully expose their weakness.

But we don’t think this game will be easy, and even though on current form it looks like it should be an easy win for Newcastle, that’s not always how these games shape up.

Remember that Newcastle were completely outplayed in the first half at Scunthorpe United in the last round, and while the lads came back well in that second half, they still had the luck to get through.

And with any luck, Scunthorpe would have had more than that one goal at half time.

One other thing that worries us about this game is the makeup of the side, which will likely contain at least six changes from the side that did so well at Villa Park on Saturday,  to get a good 1-1 draw.

There will be Rob Elliot in goal making his debut tonight, and other players like James Perch, Shane Ferguson, Dan Gosling and Sylvain Marvaux likely to get starts, and we will just have to hope the new-look side can gel quickly.

Its difficult to know exactly which team Alan Pardew will start tonight – but here’s one shot at the team:

Elliot
Simpson Perch Taylor (S) (c) Ferguson
Gosling  Guthrie Tiote Marveaux
Ben Arfa
Demba Ba
Subs: Harper Coloccini Cabaye Abeid Ameobi (Sa) Lovenkrands Best

With Ben Arfa starting,  we are assuming he will play in the withdrawn striker role behind a big man up front, which could be Demba Ba tonight.

As long as the lads can play well together as a team, that side should be enough to get the job tonight, but we’re a little bit uncertain about this game, and don’t think it is going to be as easy as it looks on paper.

Let’s hope the lads can start well and get at that Forest defense quickly.

Keys to the game tonight is another strong performance from the defense is needed, and some much needed creativity up front from players like Ben Arfa and Sylvain Marveaux, and maybe Demba Ba can get his first goal for the club tonight.

We are looking to get through this tie in the 90 minutes, and hope we don’t need extra time this time around.

That’s because  we have to wallop  Blackburn Rovers on Saturday afternoon, and who knows we could even go 3rd top of the league with a win on Saturday.

But first things first, and Newcastle must get through this game tonight.

Howay The Lads!!

Lovenkrands is sure to play – maybe on the wing, marveaux on the other. Arfa behind shola or ba… gosling and guthrie in the middle.. that’s my guess.

@ stunna – do carling cup bookings definitely carry over? If so then Id agree….!

    My team:
    Krul
    Raylor Perch Saylor Fergie
    Marv guthrie gosling sameobi
    HBA shola

    My logic being:
give raylor a workout on the right with a view to Santon coming in eventually on the left
    try fergie out at LB
swap Saylor & collo at 45min
Keen to see what sameobi does with more time on the pitch, same with Marv
HBA needs a game, but swap him for Ba on HT
play shola tonight, good chance he wont start on sat (harsh but fair)

@GT89 – cheers mate – I didnt know that. Moved down to the big smoke 15 yrs ago so havent listened to Galaxy in a long time!!
Capital used to be London’s Metro, but guess theyve gone national. I never listened to it for fear of accidentally hearing Jeremy Theakston and my head exploding.

Would be tempted to give sammy a start on the right wing with gosling, guthrie and mav making the rest of the midfield. Benny and ba of loven up front..

yer all domestic competition bookings and reds carry into all other domestic competitions it is only european competition cards which are not counted against players in their domestic comps however a red card recieved in match doesnt count against a player until 7 days after it was recieved to give the player ample opportunity to appeal the sanction which is why skrtel and Adam could play for Liverfool in the carling cup after having recieved red cards in their previous domestic match

p.s. Pardew has said he doesnt want to start sammy yet as he is having great effect as an impact sub as a game changer and it will effect his game adversely at this stage of his development to have to take on too much responsibility or words to that effect so sameobi will probs get bout 30 mins tonight off the bench

I’d rather see Ben Arfa come off the bench instead of starting, bring him on once the game has settled down, I reckon Forest will come out for the first 20 minutes full of fire and aggression, maybe introduce the lad after half time. Looking forward to seeing Marveaux get a decent run out tonight, he looked good at Villa

HBA will more than likely get a few niggles as he comes back. He has been out for a year after all!

In my experience the biggest problem with bringing people back from this kind of injury is actually in their mind… We’ll see that pretty quickly if he looks like pulling out of things he’d otherwise go for.
Especially any challenge that looks similar to the one that hurt him.

Best thing that can happen to HBA is he gets clattered, gets a couple of bruises, but comes through generally unscathed. That way he knows in his own mind that he’s OK.

Normally, I cannot listen on line to Radio Newcastle for Premiership games.
Does anyone know if it’s different for cup games ?
