It looks liem Sunderland may be zoning in on Freiburg striker Papiss Cisse as a replacement for the departed, Asamoah Gyan, who went loan for big money and left Sunderland high and dry.
Pappis Dembe Cisse – Newcastle target in January?
Newcastle were credited with a bid of £10M for Cisse on the last day of the transfer window last month, but we find it hard to believe that Mike Ashley would bid £10M for anybody, at least initially.
The news is that FC Freidburg want around £13M for their top striker, and some news today that Sunderland want the Senegal International as their top target in January.
But he’ll be playing in the African Cup of Nations in January, which will be co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea, and it could be hard to negotiate a deal then, and apparently SC Freiburg want to keep the player until next summer in any case.
Cisse recently signed a new contract with Freiburg until 2014, but that was more a Freiburg move, to ensure they get top dollar for their star striker, which is fine of course.
And news today that the striker Newcastle almost brought in on 31st August, Modibo Maiga of Sochaux, has settled his differences with his Sochaux club, and now wants to stay there.
The 24 year-old has said today he is now happy to remain at the Stade Auguste Bonal, as he told L’Equipe:
“Everything is forgotten. I don’t want to speak any more on the issue,” “I have now recovered from some physical problems and I now have the chance to play in the first team.
“Every player likes to receive offers but in my case the president did not want to sell.” “He spoke with me and told me I needed to stay at Sochaux and I prefer to leave things the way they are.”
Newcastle are expected to try once again to bring in a top striker in the January transfer window, and Maiga and Pappis Demba Cisse could still be targets, as could be PSG’s Mevlut Erdinc.
But if the club wants to be successful in bringing any player into to the club, they may have to fork out the necessary transfer fee, rather than doing everything on the cheap.
We’re all for doing good deals, and there’s no doubt Newcastle have done a lot of those over the last 18 months or so, which is great, but it can also be overdone.
It was overdone in late August, with the result that manager Alan Pardew was left without the top striker he was promised after Andy Carroll departed last January.
And while we are the transfer topic, why don’t Newcastle bring in Erik Pieters from Dutch club PSV, because the full back position seems to be the weak link at Newcastle right now, along with a shortage of experienced central defenders.
A striker, full back and central defender would be terrific acquisitions if Newcastle can get that business done in January.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #81I can assure you that Newcastle never wanted Maiga, and probably not Cisse either. These are RED HERRINGS..Just like Arsenal inquiring about Barton this summer..they never wanted him. He doesn’t fit Wenger’s footaballing philosophy. Newcastle wants to be a Arsenal-type club, and to do that, we need a CF who can pass as well as shoot. Very few of the Forwards we have been linked with, fit with the type of organization we are aspiring to be.

Comment #82Id love to see Nicolas Anelka at theclub next season and I know the first thing people will say is hes too old.. well if we bought him next season he’d be 33, but to me personally that doesnt make any difference because he’d have at least anothr 2 more seasons at the top level. He’ll get goals guaranteed 10+ every season and at the end of the day Id rather he was scoring goals for us than against us for another PL team.
Come January we need to get a striker in and thats only if we are not doing wll in that department if we are doing well then we should just wait until January, looking at what teams do in the January window and thats just panic buy Id rather see us wait than panic buy another Xisco.
Lastly a CB is a must, a defonate. Yes we have S.Taylor, Colo, Perch and Kadar and Willo but should S.Taylor or Colo get injured I dont wanna see us struggle I rekon with Smalling joining ManUtd a bid for Jonny Evan wouldnt go a miss, young talented and able to do the job.

Comment #84Pardew has already said he wants the Leverkusen swiss international forward Eren Derdiyok so he could be our main strike target in january Pardew said “he’s a player that could do a job for us” he also said he went ourt to watch the last switzerland game to show the board he wanted that player and to highlight the fact we need a CF in… like they need it any more underlined, highlighted or in lights!

Comment #86As Senegal have already qualified for the Afican Cup of Nations we already risk losing Demba Ba for at least the whole of January, so bringing in another African striker would be a huge risk at least in the short term as we’ll be contesting premiership games, the FA cup and hopefully maybe still in the League cup come January:
Papiss Cisse (Senegal – already qualified for ANC)
Modibo Maiga (Mali – currently of of their qualifying group for ANC)
So it would seem that someone like Mevlüt Erdinç may be a better bet…
…of course this doen’t take into account the whims of Fatman and Robin’

Comment #89Predictions on Blackburn game? I think we could take that, just like we did Fulham. I predict a 2-0 win for us. Pedersen still out, but they have Holiett, who looked very lively against Arsenal. Our defense is currently better than Arsenals tho…
Should be a good one. Could use a bit more offensive talent on the field tho, Best up top with HBA behind, Marveux left, Gutti right.

I’m a Saturday 3pm man these days, so Blackburn is my first game of the season, so hope you are right!
I think AP will ease HBA in and he will start on the bench on Saturday (more’s the pity), however Ive a sneaking feeling that Marveaux will get a start in place of either Obertan or Gutti, other than that unchanged from Aston Villa starting 11.

Comment #92As I mentioned Cisse as a possible target early in May this year hopefully the Scouting Team are reading this as there’s a bargain basement young player who could easily fit into this NUFC squad going by the name of Artiom Rud?ev
He plays in Poland for Lech Poznan (yes that Poznan) and is currently top scorer in the Polish League. Artiom Rud?ev is Latvian but born into a Russian family and has played for Latvia at U21 and senior level. He’s scored goals everywhere he’s been and maybe it’s time for him to move on to another step in his career ?
The good news for us is he’s available for £5m + and a few Sports Direct vouchers. So go get him Fatman 🙂

Comment #93Blackburn will be a very tough game they are our bogey team after all.
Plus with Hoilet, ollson formica and Rochina who seems like a really good player they are not going to be pushovers.
I think we`ll win 1-0 2-1 it will be close though.

Comment #95Please, will u lot ever stop banging on about Erdinc? I thibk he’d rather get a dose of the clap than move to Tyneside. As for the idea that the best teams have small strikers – forget about it – we still need players who can threaten in the air.
2 reasons
1. Its English football
2. We dont have sufficient clss to keep it on the deck all the time.

All-UK line-up would be:
Harper (or Elliot)
Raylor (minus Beret) – Saylor – Perch (OMG!) – Simpson
Ferguson – Smith – Gosling – Guthrie
Amoebi – Ameobi (assuming neither opt for Nigeria…)

Comment #102I’d like to see us go for Luuk DeJong from FC Twente, young Dutch international with a cracking scoring record who’s great on the floor and at 6’2” he’s good in the air, would cost maybe around 10m but the lad has it all and a big future ahead; would work well with HBA in behind. I’m sure Graham Carr would’ve marked his cards and imo this guy is a better bet than all those we’ve been linked with

Comment #108I’d love to see us sign Pieters but not sure it’ll happen, more likely to sign a young up and coming LB as cover around the 2-3m mark. Similarly, i think we’ll go for the same spec when bringing in a CB, the money we do have will mostly likely all be used for a CF. Please let it be DeJong

Imagine indeed…or from my overworked imagination how about this:
To the classic tune of Batman:
Fatman: “Hey Robin’ this Gotham City (Newcastle) team are doin’ quite well with our cheap out of town imports, whaty’d think?”
Robin’: “Yeah, The Penguin (Ba) and The Riddler (Best) are terrosing this toon, and don’t forget we’ve got the Joker (Ameobi) on the bench!”
Fatman: “Good point Robin’, in fact why don’t we flog our out of town imports to Metropolis City (Man Utd, Man City Liverpool, Chelsea) at a huge profit and high tail it out of here?”
Robin’: “Great idea Fatman! but we better move quick before commissioner Gordon (NUFC Supporters) hear about it!”
Fatman: “Robin’ get on the Fatphone quick and ring Metroplois City!”
…Can comissioner Gordon save Gotham City before Fatman and Robin’ ruin the day…stay tuned for the next cliff-hanging episode (in January)
