Leon Best is on a remarkable scoring streak this year.
Leon Best – doing so well for Newcastle this season - so far
In 17 appearances for the Newcastle first team he has scored 9 goals and that’s not too bad, in anybody’s book.
But we’d still like to see another goal or two from Leon against Blackburn this afternoon, and Leon is drawing a lot of attention to himself, and rightly so, because for the second time this year, he is the man who’s stepping up to the plate and scoring goals.
And indeed, if Leon keeps scoring through the end of the year, there’s even a chance that Newcastle will not bother to bring in a new striker, especially if Demba Ba starts scoring goals, and Peter Lovenkrands has just proved a point on Tuesday night with two more goals for the Magpies.
Leon has scored three goals in his last two games for the Newcastle side, and 25 year-old defender Steven Taylor, who seems to be almost back to his best form these days, was full of praise for the Nottingham born striker:
“Leon Best’s record speaks for itself. Since he’s come in and been playing games he’s done the job,” “People have probably underestimated him.” “But he’s scored some fantastic goals.”
“And has kept getting himself in the right places at the right time.” “He’s a very confident lad, even in training sessions.” “He’s not frightened to get his shot off in and around the box, and he put them in off the post, stanchion, the lot.”
“He’s got that in his locker, and both feet as well. There is fantastic power in his shot, but he’s quick as well.” “He’s tough for defenders to mark as he is very good in the air and can hold the ball up.”
“He is doing very well.” “He’s never really had a chance, and for our gaffer to give him an opportunity is massive,” “Leon has started to repay the manager by putting in the performances that he has done.”
“Even in the games where we haven’t scored, he has still been closing defenders down, and doing a job for the team.” “He sacrifices himself for the team and will help the midfield out.”
Leon was interviewed on Sky Sports before the PL games this weekend, and he did his level best to come across as a modest guy, adn just about convinced us all, but he said all the right things, and seems just delighted with how he’s done so far this season.
Steven is right, Leon is a confident lad, but it’s so important the players have belief in themselves, without being big headed.
But Leon also knows that a striker must keep knocking those goals in regularly, and another goal today, and he’ll be getting a lot more attention in the press.
Go for it Leon!
