Alan Pardew Tries To Clarify Newcastle Goalkeeper Situation

We’re not sure who the number two goalkeeper is at Newcastle right now.

Steve Harper – number 2 goalkeeper at Newcastle?

25 year-old Rob Elliot made his debut  in the Carling Cup last Tuesday night, but was at fault for at least one of the goals, and seemed to have a bit of a tough night, after he was preferred to Steve Harper for that game.

But Steve was back on the bench for Newcastle in the game yesterday against Blackburn Rovers, so we’re not sure if Pardew will rotate Rob and Steve on the bench, as backup goalkeeper to number one goalkeeper Tim Krul.

After Steve Harper took over from the departed Shay Given in January of 2009, he had a good run in the first team but that run is now over, and the last time the local veteran played  for the first team in a  competitive game,  was the 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa last April.

And of course Dutch International Tim Krul now seems to be the definite number one choice, and has been in great form so far this season.

There has been some talk of maybe Harper going out on loan, but manager Alan Pardew is having none of it, as he said today in the Sunday Sun:

“There is no situation with Steve. Harps and Rob are here as back-up to Tim at the moment because Tim has the jersey. It is as simple as that.”

“There is no chance of him going out on loan. None at all.”

Pardew was asked if he said anything to Rob after his debut in the 4-3 win at Nottingham Forest:

“I have not had to say anything to him. He is a very, very good goalkeeper.”

It’s still a bit of a surprise to us as to why we need another goalkeeper, since last season Tim Krul and Steve Harper did the duties at Newcastle.

All we can think of is that Alan Pardew wanted three experienced goalkeepers able to do the first team duties, although of course Newcastle also have Swedish U21 goalkeeper Ole Soderberg in their ranks.

Steve Harper has made 191 appearances for Newcastle in his career, and young Tim Krul, who is improving rapidly at Newcastle, now  has 41 appearances.

Comments welcome.

If anything, we’re simply preparing for a GK thats 36 years of age to retire.
    Not much to that tbh.

I guess that Forster has got more ambition than a young Steve Harper and wouldnt be prepared to warm the bench for years.

    QPR vs Villa

1st half Barton was wasteful. So far, the second half is passing him by – game is too quick for him.

Oh, glad we didn’t waste 10m on Zog, too.

Sorry to bring up the transfer window, but this seems so obvious to me…
Papiss cisse has scored 6 in 7 for freiburg this season, 24 in 34 last season, and 7 in 10 for senegal in total. would be a terrific team mate for demba ba, would cost about 12m, and could definitely score goals. only drawback is a.c.o.n, but surely lovenkrands and best could do a job if it was just for january?

tiotiotiotaayyyyy – totally agree with cisse mate, we dont even need to rely on Lovenkrands neither cos when its the ACON we can just play 4-2-3-1 only problem is we’l lose Tiote aswel

I dont think he’ll buy a striker especially if Ba and Best have fifteen or twenty between them by January, getting a couple of defenders in to add competition for places is a must.

gt89 yeah the reason i suggested lovenkrands was because i thought tiote would leave us a little light, hopefully gosling can buck his ideas up, and maybe sameobi could do a job upfront? would rather have potential than ‘experience’ and thats putting it politely

Well QPR deserved to win and that pen for Villa was a utter joke. Decent game to watch though I suppose.

Glad you agree mate not sure if it was because of HBA or simply because we had 5 in the centre but it seemed fluid which was great to see

Villa were dirty in that match! More players in their team were yellow carded than those that weren’t.

Cabaye should start having some of our direct free-kicks. Don’t like Raylor, having exclusivity over them.

We actually almost lost to QPR if anyone have notice.
    With player like Taarabt.

-Colo came out of his def and from behind he couldnt even intercept him when he is on the ball.

-Simpson keep backing off along the right and into the box when Taarabt/fast winger attack him.

    – In order to hlp the team or another Tiote got a yellow when trying to win the ball back. (barton)

    – etc. So have we meet the strong team with fast wingers and attacker.

    1. Aseneal.
    2. Villa
    3. ..

Hope Newcastle continue with the form and the players continue to improve on.

Raylor is our best freekick-taker, no doubt. But it will be better if we have more set play style against different situation.

    Davis.

They were buoyant on the back of signing a bunch of players, when we faced them. Let’s see how they fair in the return fixture. Looked decidedly average today.

    Catchy

I am the ultimatum. You either agree, or you’re wrong, don’t try teaching a granny to suck eggs 😆

    Only joking…

Definitely need to let others have a try on FKs though, occasionally.

The reason we struggled vs QPR is because Raylor is no leftback, Tiote, Colo and Stayls were having to play the ball across to the right all game in case Raylor messed up and they scored,
I reckon once we have a lefty at leftback position (santoon) we will have more going forward and a much safer midfield, Jonas will get forward more as he wont be scared for Raylor and Tiote et al wont be scared to pass him the ball.
Very pleased for Demba ba, although we will miss him big style in January, although im hoping we have a few more points on the board.
A draw vs wolves will be ok but a win would be superb, I wonder if wolves will try and man mark Cabaye like blackburn tried, I hope so cos it leaves so much room for our other attacking players.

Agree that Cabaye should start having some of our direct free-kicks. Rtaylor is not Beckham. but tobe fair he did score when it was needed most.

We shall watch and see further. Once drop in performance hope AP will r/p the taker

One thing is the striker is finding their form and the net. We cant just keep defending like that…but would mind if we can do it as well for this season..

Being called up to the Italian U-21 side, too. I think he’ll be on the bench for Wolves, maybe even a surprise start? We did buy him to play him, afterall.

Hoping we can keep our run going against Wolves, but Pardew is right. We cannot afford to be complacent.

Also Villa drew so our position is not that bad. The lowest we can fall to is 7th, but most likely if we do lose we will end up in 5th thanks to goals difference

It’s not only Jonas covering for Raylor davis_toons, it is Colo as well. Raylor is really not good enough to play LB. We need Santon in there as soon as possible. Raylor is ok as a fill-in right winger but that is about it. When everyone is fit he will be on the bench where he belongs. We still need a RB as far as I can tell. Simpson looked as tentative as ever defensively against Blackburn. Everntually it will cost us a game.
