We thought Gabriel Obertan played very well on Saturday and made some great marauding runs at the Blackburn defense.
Gabriel Obertan – in action on Saturday
Gabriel Obertan talked to the local Newcastle press today:
“That is the reason I moved to Newcastle.” “I was really happy when they came in for me and I did not hesitate. It is great the coach trusts me.”
“There is a good group of players here, off the pitch there is a good atmosphere. I have no regrets coming here.” “We can get better now and I am finding my marks now. I am just enjoying playing football.
“It is great and I have not had this feeling for two years.” “It is great just to be on the pitch. It is perfect to play 90 minutes again each week.” “It is good to well against these teams, Blackburn and Wolves are quite physical.”
It seems as though as the 22 year-old gains in confidence, he’s getting better and better, and his obvious skill is why Manchester United signed him a couple of years ago from French club Bordeaux, for around £3M, which is about the fee Newcastle paid the Red Devils for him last summer.
Obertan admitted the Newcastle players really wanted the win in front of the Geordie fans, as he continued:
“We really wanted to win this game and we produced some good football.” “It had been a while since we played at home.”
“Yes, we were lucky with their player sent off but we still produced and we are happy to take three points.” “Everybody produced, the defence played well, the midfield kept composure and it helped us produce some good football.”
“We are just happy to keep on not losing. When we win like this, it is just a great feeling.” “I am really happy for Demba Ba because he works very hard in training.”
“We have not lost a game this season so it is great for our confidence.” “We have a good group in the changing room. If we can keep playing like this it will be great.”
Gabriel played only 28 times for the Red Devils with one goal over the two seasons he was there, but he wanted to play more, and he already has 7 appearances in the famous black and white stripes of Newcastle.
That’s one reason he came to the Newcastle club, to play more, and Gabriel looks like he’s nailing down that right wing position, which is exactly what the people at Newcastle were hoping he’d do.
There is great competition for places at Newcastle, and that coupled with an excellent team spirit and a complete team approach to the game, seems to be a winning combination this season.
Long may that continue.

Comment #3This group, I feel, has a burning desire to triumph. Many have individual points to prove – together they will do it!
The emphasis is firmly back on the football, just how I like it.

Comment #4@ niafron – The lads are all getting on, you can see that when they celebrate and how there is no arguing going on with them.
Also, after every game this season most of the team have made the effort to applaud the fans be it home or away at all four corners of the ground.
They may be enjoying it as much as we are!
OberToon is looking BETTER, but still needs a bit better decision making in the final third.
Well done felas.

Comment #6he really is no better than routledge, and we have much better kids than him,
but il let every one who wants to wear blinkers think what they want,,
he still has a lot to do to convince me he should be in the first team,,
one question, if he is that good,, how good was nobby?? he never had speed, but could BEAT most left backs, not the poor ones, and find a man in the middle time after time,

Comment #8What is wrong with our team spirit?
As far as I can tell our team spirit is great. Yet every week in their interviews, our players are saying we have good team spirit…
Sorry, its been a while since I read a negative comment.. not counting the mongs jumping on Best against blackburn when he missed a couple or chances..
Cant wait for Wolves, if history has taught me anything it is that when things are looking good (our unbeaten streak) something bad is waiting around the corner (getting beat off a less than average wolves side)
but again, if history has taught me anything…
This is Newcastle, and Anything can happen!
Great start to the season, Long may our luck continue.

Comment #14Obertan played really well. He stretches and scatters teams, that’s invaluable, as they lose their shape and are drawn out of their comfort zones, creating space.
Blackburn were frightened of him.
He created 2 chances for himself, on the break. He set-up Best on the edge of the area too, with an intelligent pull back, which he ballooned. I also like how, when passing, he zips the ball into feet, with authority.
He’s now peering out of his shell. A goal will obliterate the shell! 😛

Obertans’ shooting is on another level to Jonas’. He strikes the ball, Jonas scuffs it. Not knocking Jonas, as his strengths lay elsewhere.

like iv said before, i have no problem with his work ethic , but tell me why ppl get on smiths back, he puts lots of effort in, runs all day, but no end product,
i feel obertan is a headless chicken most of the time, with no end product, but if our fans want players that only have speed and work rate, then he is your man,,
and yes ,, ppl said yesterday that he made space, or relived the preasure,,, i dont really by this, we played forest who are or where 2nd bottom of league 1, and we played a bburn side who where, very poor, and there lb was one of the worst iv seen

I know right? I mean I know everyone is a critic but anyone sad enough to pick apart a player on our own team is a bit silly. Unless they support another team I could understand but they don’t.
We really need another forum for people like that.
I’d love for us to finish 4th though. Would take me back to when we were in the CL days and UEFA. It’ll happen lads, have faith!

Yes but the difference is, Obertan doesn’t go out looking for a tackle getting a yellow card and disappearing, Obertan is probably the reason we are still in the Carling Cup. Did he not make an amazing cross to win us the game? Or was I watching another team. Seriously dude, no body can have an opinion other than good at the moment he is yet to cost us anything.

I guarantee you blithered on about Enrique, amongst others, in the same vein.
You’ve compared him to Smith. Compared him to Nobby (I wonder if he were complete and rounded, at 22?). Presented a link from Talksport – your argument is invalid.
Listen to SAFs departing comments. The kid has undeniable talent. Admittedly he suffers with confidence sometimes, but if he banishes those issues, which can only be procured through having a settled starting spot, we will reap the rewards.
Already, he’s visibly getting better, by almost everyones’ account – himself, AP, most fans – how can’t you see this?
Your opinion is your’s, however farfetched. You must enjoy barracking our own players.

Comment #27Catchy you use Talksport as a reference, funny how Veron and Forlan had much better success away from Manure, maybe they couldn’t play in England but they showed elsewhere in Europe and on the international stage.
I also saw Ryan Babel on the second list, I think most people know he isn’t rubbish but was ruined at Loserpool.
Give Obertan a chance, hes young and trying and for me doing a good job so far. Much better than Barton did on the right.
But keep up your negativity even if your in the minority 🙂

i think jose is a loss to our club, but i never once came on here saying he should stay, as i believe that if a player dont want to be at a club, you wont get the best out of him,
i say good luck to the lad
just cos iv used 2 talk sport links dont mean iv based my opinion on him from them, iv watched the kid with my own eyes, albe it from the tv, and in my opinion,(thats al it is) out of all the players that came in (outfield) he was the worst,
mendi
cabaye
marveaux
those 3 look like there gona be really great players for our club, then vukic and sam ameobi and little fergi, look like they will push hard for first team football, and those last 3, have twice the talent that obertan has, all iv seen from him is speed,
his performance against bburn, he may have been the 4 best attacking player, as i think tiote, ba and best, all had better games than he did

Comment #29The man has skill and pace – something Newcastle desperately needed. I’d rather have someone on the right wing who takes on players than just launch it into the box.
When i first heard they had signed Obertan i was delighted – i was impressed whenever i watched him at United and he’ll only improve by playing every week.
I can’t believe some fans are slating him – for 3m he could be the signing of the season.

Comment #30Catchy – Obertan has played 5 matches ffs at a new club that has new players and a new system of playing. Plus, he has only player 7 first team Prem matches for Man U. But – he’s getting better every game.

iv seen him have 2 ok games against poor teams, and i say ok in the sence that he ran but done very lettle with the ball,
i use nobby as a ref, as he new what to do with the ball from the right side of MF,
and yes he came from man u ,, so he should be even better than he is,
jesus 83,
skill???? pace yes,, but hmmm no skill,, signing of the season???, he needs to improve a hell of a lot, to beat cabaye or marveaux , i mean like 10 times better than he is right now,,

when newcastle played moncao, way back when, henry played left wing that day, and looked great, amazing infact,, i think inter bought him after that season, but he didnt do so well after that for them, winggger bought him for the ARS again . best player in the world, imo
3 m is what man u paid for him, just got his money back,,
right now im on some man u website, reading about him, and in 2 years he had about a 50/50 of fans who think like me, and you guys,
this is a blog for all to voice there opinions,
when he turns in a match winning performance il be the first to say well done, but i wont say oh wow, look at him when he wasnt even close to our best performers on sat, he sprinted into corners, and thats about it

Re: Obertan is not a Man utd player…
donald p to sign for united:
I think Obertan is wasted as a winger . I think he would be better off playing just behind the striker . He has enough potential to become a good player here, he has good dribbling and close control . He just needs to deliver the end product more often and he will prove a lot of people(like the op) wrong .
Thats the most ridiculous post of recent times,,,,,,,,,,,,, well done, good dribbling? he just kicks it and runs after it! good close control? not in any game ive ever seen. Play him behind the striker? utter madness!! luckily for us that will never happen. I am also confidently predicting he will leave the club in the summer so all u Obertan lovers will have to find another lame duck to cling to.

agree mate he was shocking and Bebe . Bebe will never be a man united player Obertan the only reason we signed was to look like we bought 3 good player in Valencia and owen there year C R 7 LEFT . so if we only signed two we would of only signed one as owen was free and Obertan made looked like we made are team bigger . in fact all he has is speed everything else is shite. a part from a shoot here and there . . also fergie will get right this summer in bring players i dont think he going to France in Hoildays this year our he could work from his Lap top in France

Fustrated with Obertan, dont think hes an English Premiere League player… maybe one division below but hes just not a Man united player.
Not sure about Bebe either… he doesnt really do anything and gets his luck goals!
Obertan showed today he cant play against crawley!

Comment #40I like bills-son as a poster on here, and I agree with most of what he says, however, post 38, in particular the last sentence, made me chuckle.
Catchy – Disagree with you about Obertan. For me he had a very good game on Saturday, but we’re here for debate and your opinions are as valid as the next man’s. Hope the lad gets good enough to live up to your standards. If he’s not good enough now, I can’t wait to see what he plays like when he is.
