Three Players Who Would Significantly Strengthen Newcastle Squad

It’s becoming clear that Newcastle made some excellent buys in the summer.

Erik Pieters could strengthen Newcastle back four

And it will take another closer look at the squad before January rolls around,  to see which players can be brought in to strengthen the squad.

One area where Newcastle looks very strong is in midfield,  and players like Yohan Cabaye, Check Tiote, Jonas Gutierrez, Gabriel Obertan, Dan Gosling, Ben Arfa, Mehdi Abeid, Sylvain Marveaux, Danny Guthrie, Alan Smith, Sammy Ameobi and Haris Vuckic are already in the squad.

That’s twelve players fighting it out for just four places in the first team, and some readers suggested that Newcastle did not need another central midfielder, like Marvin Martin of Sochaux.

We always thought Newcastle were short on the striker front and that may still come true by the end of the year, but if Leon Best and Demba Ba each get 10 goals or more by the end of this year, that may not be true.

So to us, Newcastle can strengthen most of all in defense, and that’s even when the Magpies defense currently has the best record in the Premier League, having conceded only 3 goals in 6 games.

We are not really strong at full-back,  and current full backs Danny Simpson and Ryan Taylor are not the very top class.

Danny Simpson can still improve of course,a nd that’s what we’re hoping for,  and we have not seen anything of new signing Davide Santon, who may be able to play anywhere across the back four, which would be good for the team.

So we still think we need one more top class full-back and somebody like Erik Pieters would be an excellent signing, as Santon can move over to right back, and fight it out there with Simpson..

One area of the defense where we just don’t have enough cover is at center-back, and at the moment if either Colo or Steven Taylor gets  injured, we are in a bit of trouble with Mike Williamson still out for at least another four weeks.

It seems that 21 year-old  Tamas Kadar has not come through as much was we had hoped, so the best youngsters who could come in would either be James Tavernier, currently on loan at Carlisle, or young Paul Dummett, who looked good on the American tour, when he came in to replace Danny Simpson.

James and Paul have plenty of  time to come through at Newcastle,  but right now we think we need one more experienced center-back and we know Newcastle went after Birmingham’s Liam Ridgewell, and the 27 year-old can also play at left back too.

So we think that Liam could still be a good signing for Newcastle as someone who could be good cover for the back four, and perhaps Newcastle could do a deal that included Nile Ranger.

And if we do need another striker come January,  then Modibo Maiga would be a very decent signing,  and give the Newcastle attack another option.

So Erik Pieters, Liam Ridgewell and Modibo Maiga could be good buys in January, and it’s interesting to note that Newcastle were trying to sign the last two of those players on the final day of the transfer window.

Maybe Newcastle do know what they are doing!

Who do you think would strengthen the current squad?

Comment welcome.

Carlos Tevez on loan anyone? Guti & Colo already here to help him. Worked with Pardew before at West Ham. Needs a lot of love, not getting it at the moment.

    Crazy I know.

    Bonjour messieurs.

Pieters for me, that’s all. But we really need him or anyway, we need a good left back

With Willaimson and Santon as possible replacement in on month, i still think we don’t need a CB.

And for MaÏga, he will bring nothing more to the squad. He would be only the substitute of substitute.

Well Ba may not be availlable in January, so we coulde be in trouble, but for one month, so it didn’t justify to spend 10 millions.

We got Best, and if he’s injured, we will play with Lovenkrands.
And maybe with Ranger if he remember he’s a football player…

Impossible. Problem of wages. Even if you put a gun toward the head of Ashley, he would not sign the contract.

Just looked at the pictures from Newcastles paintball-event. For me, I would like to have Shola on the other side because he never hits the target.. 🙂

What does anyone reckon about Charlie Austin as a potential target, would personally much prefer him to Maiga. He’s young and has a good goalscoring record.

I agree with Niafron .. Pieters makes a lot of sense.

    Maiga doesn’t.

I’d rather wait and add a bit of next years budget to buy a real top-quality striker.

I think what one more prove striker and that’s it…no need to spend on for the left back position then maybe we should make Ferguson and cover…but if we are thinking of making him winger then no maybe we should go for Pieters

We must free Santon for Other duties, so even with Fergie, we need a LB.
So either it is Fergie or the new guy, we would have a starter and a substitute.

Stranger things have happened before. I’m just saying.

Agree on Pieters mate. A Dutch defender currently in the national side is good enough for me esp. at DL/C
Anyways, what are your thoughts on Montpellier’s young defender Mapou Yanga Mbiwa? Seems like he could be a decent defender for NUFC.

He’s higly rated in France, and the price must still be good.

But i don’t see him choosing NUFC, cause he would not play. anyway this season.
Our two starters CB are simply to strong, so it would be stupid for such a young player who need to play to come here.

IF i was his advisor anyway, i would strongly discourage him to do that.

CB are different of Midfielders or Forwards, there’s far less turnover.

So as he will have a lot of choice, i think he would not come.

Sure, the board can still try.

Simply cause Ba and Best are excellents.

Out of the three. We only need Pieters. Why on Earth, would we need Ridgewell and Pieters?

For me, just start whispering in the agent’s lugs of Hoillet and Fellaini. They’re both freebies in the summer.

Anyway, I don’t want to discuss this rubbish. The club as a whole, should just be concentrating on the footy, our guys.

Anyone who wants an afternoon chuckle, type ‘Kevin Nolan’ into the Twitter search bar.

Lazy, fat, grossly unfit, 30 going on 50, pub player, put more effort into childishly kicking a hoarding than he did on the pitch, what’s he actually inspiring, for me to go home and rake my eyes out? Descriptions and comments, I’ve read about him from West Ham fans 😆

Maybe we can trade Perchy for Liam Ridgwell. At least Liam’s much better at this level.

There’s been some debate about Obertan. I for one seems to think he will get better & Pardew will get the best out of him. Although his movement & trickery reminds me of a certain Theirry Henry before he move from a winger to a centre forward. Could he play off the Big Ba or Best?

3 players in would make us much stronger personally id go for….

    Erik Pieters – PSV (LB,CB) Age: 23
James Tomkins – West Ham (CB,RB) Age: 22
Papiss Cisse – Freinburg (ST) Age: 26 or Nolan Roux – Brest (ST) Age: 23 or Modibo Maiga – Sochaux (ST) Age:24

….Or Would a sneaky bid for Kalou from Chelsea be a good idea? seems to be pushed down the pecking order to 4-5 choice. With a long run in the team i think he could get at least 15 goals a season.

    1) Erik Pieters – the no1 target, can play more positions
but it’s difficult to buy him.

    2) Liam Ridgewell – don’t think is good buy, only
    average standard.

    3) Modibo Maiga – i prefer Seydou Doumbia, (good
    goals record)

On the subject of Bramble, I was in a night club in Newcastle a few years ago and there was a load of people blocking access to where the toilets were. As I pushed through, I saw the idiot that is Bramble having an argument with the bouncer and (sadly), the bouncer didn’t just boot him out. “F* idiot” I said as I finally got past them. To which a nearby bloke said “Yeah. Bloody footballers, always causing trouble…”. The nearby bloke? Lee Bowyer…

We have to get Pieters in. He is rock solid and would solidify a defense that–while tremendous–is thin in terms of depth. That could improve with Williamson’s return and Santon’s health; but Pieters is an instant starter and could be one of the best defensemen in the Premier League in no time.

    Pieters or bust, I think.

A question to the audience. If all three are signed, which three current starters should they replace. Put another way, which current player has been a detriment on the pitch that necessitates a replacement. I’m not talking about bench players, such as Sh Ameobi, or are these players being suggested for cover due to Africa cup and injuries.

You ask why we are obsessed with buying players when the team is doing so well.
That’s when you SHOULD be buying players – to improve and enlarge your squad even further.
Just stand still and you go eventually go backwards.Any good organisation only succeeds with permanent ongoing progression.
To think otherwise is quite frankly naive and childish.
Do you honestly think that Alex Ferguson sits down at the end of every season when they win at least another two trophies and announces “Well that was excellent – now we don’t need anybody new”? He’ll already be planning how to make it even better next time.

    my signings would be:

1: sebastian bassong or frederik sorensen.
2: adam jonhson, james milner (on loan), giovinco or kevin mirallas.
3: carlos tevez (on loan), luuk de jong, ola toivonen or marko arnautovic

Henderson and Streete as well as Dummett and Tavernier can play centreback. We may be better covered than we realise wii both Henderson and Dummett unused subs at Forest and Tavernier doing well on loan at Carlisle United.
