Sir Bobby Robson did many great things in his life, and one of them was to start the Bobby Robson Foundation.
Sir Bobby Robson – at St. James’ Park
Robson’s foundation funds cancer research and treatment, a cause that was always close to his heart, after he had contracted cancer five times, including inoperable tumors in his lungs, which was finally responsible for his death in late July of 2009.
And an online auction, which has been backed by many personalities, including his former assistant Jose Mourinho, who worked with Bobby while Bobby was coaching in Spain and Portugal at Real Madrid, Porto and Sporting Lisbon.
The auction is called Sir Bobby’s Breakthrough Auction, and it takes place from today, 8th October through the 23rd October.
Jose Mourinho donated his FIFA Ballon D’Or World Coach of the Year award he won with Inter Milan last year, and David Beckham has donated a signed LA Galaxy shirt and a football to the cause.
The auction, and an associated fundraising ball, was thought up by Gina Long, a friend of the Robson family, and she had this to say today:
“I have been truly touched and overwhelmed by the generosity of every single donation of an auction item and messages of goodwill and support.”
Mark Robson, Sir Bobby’s son added:
“My dad would have been so proud at the way everyone has pulled together by contributing such incredible prizes.”
So far the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has raised more than £3.5M, and we encourage everybody reading this piece to donate to Bobby’s auction which can be found here.
