Newcastle Interested In Dutch International Striker

News today in the Sunday Sun that Newcastle are interested in 21 year-old FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong.

Luuk de Jong – 21 year-old Dutch International striker

Newcastle seem determined to bring in a top striker in  January, to make up for the embarrassment of missing out on a replacement for Andy Carroll in the summer.

The player only turned 21 in August, and has 21 goals in 52 games for FC Twente,  and has played at the U19 and U21 level for his country.

Luuk made his debut for Holland in the friendly game against Austria in February this year, when he replaced Dirk Kuyt, and he scored his first goal for his country in September, in the 2-0 win against Finland, during the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying game.

From what we can tell this lad, who stands 6’2″ tall, is very good young player, but the news is that FC Twente would want a sizable fee for their top youngster, who wears their number 9 shirt.

But he certainly fits the profile of players Newcastle want to bring to the club, and he will know Tim Krul from being in the Dutch Youth squads and in the full squad.

De Jong started his career with amateur club, DZC’68, and he was then recruited in 2008, by De Graafschap, and he joined FC Twente in the summer of 2009, so he was there when Cheick Tiote was still playing for Twente.

Luuk made his debut for De Graafschap in 2008 in the Eredivisie, and he was FC Twente’s top goalscorer last season and also headed the list of assists at the club, so he scores the goals and sets them up too.

He has scored 6 goals so far this season at club level, and FC Twente are nicely placed in 3rd position in the Eredivisie, just 4 points behind leaders AZ.

As reported last week,  Newcastle are still interested in FC Sochaux striker Mobido Maiga, but they will be lining up a few additional targets in case things again get bogged down with the Sochaux club, during the negotiations for Maiga.

There again, Luuk de Jong may be a better choice for Newcastle,  and Holland have a top side at the moment, so this lad must already be good, and he’s shown he can score those goals too.

What do you think?

Tiote and Krul should have the inside track on him and he fits the bill in terms of ‘one for the future’. I think we need an incomer that is already a proven 20 goal a season striker AND proven international class first though!

Possibly a story just to sell papers……

No football to report on as in games- lets throw another target onto back page !

    Time will tell

As much as i think Luuk would be a decent signing, im going to have to agree with Bam bam. Slow press day so they make something up. I hope we are watching him as he has potential in abundance.

Watched him play with Ruiz for FC Twente earlier this season.. Ruiz played off him as an attacking midfielder , and this bloke as a striker ..

Looked very good , very athletic, tall young striker ..

this would be a fantastic signing but we’d have a lot of competition for him i think. The lads quality and it’s no secret. Got a lot of Dutch friends who think he’s the business. We’d need to give him the number 9 and the fee would be above £10m.

I prefer this link to the Maiga one simply because it lessens the impact of the ACN in January.

Can you imagine if Mike pulls out a surprise and signs this lad, shaquiri and pieters in Jan?

watched the fulham v twente game earlier on in sept, he looked ok a bit of a target but more like one for the future, at the mo i think someone like andy johnson would look good in a black and white striped number 9, still pacey and a good finisher with workrate

Lets face it, FC Twente owe us a favour after we took that Tiote bloke off their hands…

“Stung by accusations that they didn’t do enough to bring in a forward in August, the club are determined to find reinforcements who fit into the recruitment blueprint.”
Whoever wrote this rubbish in the SundaySun doesn’t know Rhino-hide Ashley and Llambiarse. ‘Stung by accusations they didn’t do enough, indeed…’

We really need to learn to keep our gobs shut about potential targets! Every time a name comes up then a host of other clubs are after our targets aswel !

Funny how that has,nt happened with Pieters from PSV eh!
Liverpool are a team who have gone down in my estimations of late! Starting to actually loathe them! Not only because they paid so much for Carroll but with Murphy and Campbell they seem to be a much more physical side ! Enrique is not playing as a right back for them either, he seems to be more right midfielder!

If we get this lad i will be really pleased! But i can,t see it happening now its been on here that he,s one of our targets!

I’ve been saying for some time that this is the lad we need to be looking to sign….he’s not just one for the future, he’s one for now. I’ve watched him quite a bit and he has the lot; what the article above doesn’t tell you is that this lad played a fair bit in midfield last season yet still notched regularly. He’s comfortable with the ball at his feet and can play it about, he’s also hit 8 in 8 this season; not 6. When you consider the fees being paid for the likes of Connor Wickham or Oxlade Chamberlain who are reputedly the best young English talents….then 10/12m for De Jong would be a relative bargain. This kid’s the real deal….very very good! I sincerely hope theres truth in the story and this comes off
