Newcastle showed they may not be the very best side in the Premier League but for guts, courage and determination they are top of the league.
Demba Ba scores Newcastle’s first goal
Newcastle went behind twice against a very good Tottenham side, but both times Newcastle came roaring back with great goals from Ba and Shola Ameobi.
Newcastle went behind just before half time when Steven Taylor brought down Adebayor in the penalty box, and Ven der Vaart rifled the penalty home.
But just minutes into he second half Be slid the ball home in great style after good play from Gutierrez.
And then on 68 minutes Defoe had a half chance when Ryan Taylor got on the wrong side of the Spurs striker, and Defoe put the ball into the net past a helpless Krul, in great style.
And maybe Shola Ameobi’s 86th minute equalizer was even better, when Ameobi put the ball whizzing into the net from the left wing position, which was simply a brilliant goal from the returning Shola.
Shola has his critics with the Newcastle fans, but his goal today was just absolutely fabulous – well done Shola.
Steven Taylor talked after a thrilling game to Sky Sports:
“I think it was a penalty, I made contact and I’m disappointed with that,” “But credit to the lands, we came back and it was fully deserved.”
“There’s determination and a winning mentality in the squad and today that showed.” “We knew if we got a goal it was going to be electric here and the fans got behind us and rode us on,”
“From going a goal behind we came back and were unlucky to just get a point.” “There’s loads of confidence,” “We’re playing well so bring on the next game against Wigan. We’re looking forward to it.”
Cheick Tiote was named man of the match, and he worked his socks off for the Newcastle side this afternoon, and continually got the ball for the home side, and Cheick is playing as well as ever, and may even be improving.
“It was a really good game, played well and we deserved the point,” “It was a big test because everybody knows Tottenham is a good team and today we saw that.”
And Alan Pardew played his part today as he was continually shouting encouragement to the lads, and when Newcastle went 2-1 down he was waving his players forward towards the opposing goal.
Newcastle stay fourth in the league table with 16 points from their eight games, and two points above Liverpool, and their next game is against struggling Wigan Athletic at St. James’ Park next Saturday afternoon.
Wihan are second bottom of the league and no doubt Newcastle will be big favorites next Saturday, but these are games just as important as the Spurs game today, and Newcastle must again be at their best.
If Newcastle only beat the bottom half teams this season they will end up in a high league position, and we cannot be over confident against Wigan.

Comment #1If i was being overly critical today i think cabaye put taylor under pressure to give away the pen. Taylor at fault though silly lad. Obertan didn’t get at BAE today which was disapointing and simpson was ok. The rest of the team were quality. Jonas Tiote and Coloccini get my praise for today’s game! They were quality. Also what a finish Shola! Must’ve thought he was playing the mackems just kidding but great goal and Ba 5 in 3. Early contender for signing of the season if he can keep it up. Crowd was bouncing today for the first time in ages. HBA looked sluggish in possession but grew into the game a bit more. He’ll need time.

Have to agree with u on Obertan mate, i didn’t think he was shite, but he looses the ball to easily. He started off well i thought, but never really made that final third if u know what i mean.
Marveux and Jonas is up next game.
Simmo was dead quiet today, i saw him only once. Santon may start for him against Wigan.

Comment #9In 2008/09 we reported an operating loss before player trading of £37.7m. In 2009/10 that loss was £33.5m. Once audited, our accounts for 2010/11 are expected to show an operating loss of just £4.7m and this year we hope we will be close to breaking even.
Why give us figures before player trading?
Why not before TV revenue, before gate receipts … I smell a rat.
So is that 4.7M before player trading too?
In which case we have to add on a certain 35M?
Were loans to Ashley repaid.
I hate people trying to spin me.
When will they learn … just play it with a straight bat Derek.
Great game today.
Well done lads.
Doubters answered, we matched and at times bettered Spurs.
Top 4 by right.
Great subs too for a change.

Comment #11So if we are to start HBA do we put in the hole behind Best or Ba? Hafta say that Ba’s goals would surely keep him in the running for playing up front by himself but Best can do a job too, depends who plays better with HBA i suppose. Want to see more of Marveaux in the league instead of the Carling Cup

I would star HBA in the hole behind Ba, Best is a hard worker and a decent goal poacher, he was a bit quiet for me today, didn’t really break through like he should. Also still think Best needs to work on his finishing.
Ba helps out the team and seems to be good at position, has a bit of pace in him, probs a bitter better technical than Best aswell.

I saw it mate 😉
I was just emphesizing what u were saying on Obertan on the shite part. Neither of us thought he was shite, but he wasn’t good enough either.
He seemed to work a bit more today, but still think he gives up too easily at times, a bit frustrated with him as he seem to have trouble combining his pace with a bit of flair. It’s usually one or the other. Could be class if he can work his speed into his technical skills and needs to increase his work rate.
No, i think he needs a “dent” in his 8 match run now, being replaced by Marveux in the next match.
We’re at home to Wigan, HBA, Marveux and Santon should all start imo. It’s a match i’m expecting us to win tbh.
Leave Obertan on the bench and sub him on as an impact player to show that our faith in him is not lost.

Comment #16Looking at some comments about Obertan and I must agree with the people that are saying he has been poor. yes he may have ran down a pass for 60-70 yards, but he lost it just about every time it was at his feet and could not do the simple things like passing the ball 4-6 yards successfully. For me, it is amazing he starts every game because he contributes so little to the team. THATS MY OPINION, so dont shoot me down for it.
Enough with the negativity now, we drew 2-2 with the spuds (a supposed *champions league favourite* club) and to be honest it felt like a win for me because I cannot stand (or sit down for that matter) spurs or flappy face redknapp. HWTL keep up the hard work, hopefully 3 points from Wigan next week 🙂

Comment #18I’d just like to remind some Shola haters (particularly JP from under the Rock who called the Strolla “a cancer at this club”) that Walker’s finest was tremendous when he came on today! Yes, he is probably the most frustrating player I have ever seen at NE1 but those who deny he has any talent should give their heads a shake and look at his actual record as a striker who has never ever been number1 choice at Newcastle.
And fairplay to Pardew for some brave substitutions today!

Comment #19Whatever I do know the meaning of the word and still apply it you. Wonder where the other neggars such as Angryman and Solano are? during the WINDOW you guys were all out in full force and it’s great to see them in hibernation now we’re doing well.
Ashley is actually running the club well, he has made some ludicrous decisions but in the long run I think many more will agree that instead of ruining our club he has saved it.

u still do not believe us at top 6?
u still think i should stop smoking the funny stuff, for saying that we are a top 6 team?
Today we were the better team for 80% of the game.
And that was against a potential top 4 team..
I am thinking that we might sould aim for that fourth spot to! We have the class IMO!
Great team, and 8 goals from our two top strikers in 8 games.. It´s all there for the take..
I had us in for 16 points after 8 games, so i am not surprised about that!
I hit the nail in 6 out of 8 games so far!
i had us for 1 point against the Scum and 3 against QPR. The rest i got..

Comment #22Obertan is not my favourite. He keeps getting into dangerous positions with only the full back to beat and not make anywhere near the most of it.
Can we please not slate him or anyone else though… shola haters are probably looking for a new punchbag this week but let’s not pick on individual players. They are all little bits of the jigsaw and Pardew will get it right in time, using them all where needs be.

Comment #23Simpson was sh*te. Gutierrez was good…for once. Tiote superb. Obertan was sh*te. Best and Ba both decent. Saylor prone to silly mistakes i.e the pen, Collo superb. Krul did fine when called into action. Raylor handled his role at LB well considering he’s out of position for another week…Ben Arfa a wee bit of a dissapointment but I will accept he was injured. Cabaye largely anonymous with the exception of a few lovely cross field balls.
Shola brilliant – I was rueing the substition when it happened but it was really inspired. He must have been up for it tonight, unlike most matches/if not all.

Lol, must admit, when i saw Shola subbing on with HBA and Best and Ba going off, i thought “Right, there’s our chances of us scoring any goals gone”.
But my word, what a match to pick to make me swallow my words.
As u say, one of the most frustrating players in our squad, but god i love him when he shines like today.

Comment #27Following on from my last post, I’d like it now if Alan would play Ben Arfa and Marveaux, with Benny replacing one of the two big lads up front and Marveaux coming in for Obertan who was truly our weakest link tonight. Him and Simpson made our right flank a tad sh*te.
Possibly could see Santon replacing Simpson in the starting line up.

Comment #31By the way, I keep reading lots of ‘I told you so’s’ on here… can we ease off or get it out your system in one comment and leave it at that.. it does lack class.
Every single person on here wants and dreams of nufc success – some were cautious, some were negative, some were positive.. we all pay our money, we are all entitled to share in the success even if we were gutted good players left, or we didn’t sign the players that were promised.
I repeat if you have to weigh in with an ‘I told you so’.. get it off your chest and move on.

Comment #32Simpson was the weakest link not Obertan. It’s ludicrous how some people are so down on Obertan when he has the potential to be an outstanding player for this club, Lennon had no end product for Spurs, neither did Nani or Ronaldo when they first arrived at United. Im not saying Obertan will be at that standard but end product is something that alot of wingers develop given the right encouragement and Pards will give him that.
Having said that I would play Marv against Wigan as a game we should win.

What u’re forgetting mate is that only our midfield has strength in depth, and if Tiote and Cabaye got injured at the same time, we don’t yet know how strong that depth is.
We lose 2 forwards and a CB, and we’re playing Perch, Shola/Loven.
However good our midfield is, we need more quality in depth.
This is yet untested for us, and great having most players fit 8 games into the season, but we all know it won’t last.
Let’s think about all the scenarios that can happen before we get carried away.

Comment #37Lads, just got in from the match. What a quality game all round although Spurs seemed to fall at any given opportunity. Spurs are a quality team wit some excellent players but today, i believe we just edged them. I must admit lol when Ameobi was warming up i turned to the bloke behind me and said “we are doomed, the kid is useless”. Then he pops up and scores a blinder. I sit in OLD MANS CORNER as its known by many fans and when Ameobi scored the placed ERUPTED big time. The bloke behind me flung his arms around me to eat my words but i was to busy screaming AMEOBBIIII lol. He came on and changed it and i am no Ameobi fan at all.. Great to see Santon and great to see a full back pass the half way line with a quality touch. Great game, just wish Colo had of finished off that chance. Only heard the Spurs fans sing twice and that was when they scored. Great day….happy daysssss..HOWAY THE LADS!!!!!!

Right fair play the ‘smoking dodgy substances’ remark maybe a bit over the top but that was to us being top 4. I think we will finish around the 10 mark but again thats just my opinion mate 😉
We looked good today and we had the lion share of attacking presence but spurs are still ahead of us by some way (again my opinion) and when King (best english defender when fit imo) went off for them it was a huge blow for the dirty spuds ;D
