There were reports in Holland yesterday that Newcastle were leading the race to sign 21 year-old Dutch striker Luuk de Jong.
Luuk de Jong – £10M Newcastle target?
Newcastle were reported to be interested in this player almost a couple of weeks ago in the local Sunday Sun, with both Liverpool and Arsenal also reported to be interested in signing the youngster.
According to reports in Holland yesterday, it seems as though it is Newcastle who are now leading the race, and the story is that they are preparing a £10M bid for the 3 times capped Dutch International in January.
Newcastle scouts have reportedly been watching the youngster in recent weeks, with Chief Scout Graham Carr monitoring the FC Twente striker.
The news yesterday was that Newcastle have been so impressed with the youngster that they will move in January to try to sign the former De Graafschap player on Tyneside, who has already been capped 3 times by Holland.
Of course we have to balance this report with the news that Newcastle will bring Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga to Newcastle very early in January, because Newcastle will not be bringing in two strikers.
De Jong, 21 is in the final year of his three year contract at FC Twente, so it could be a good time for Newcastle to move in for the former Dutch U21 striker (2 games – 3 goals).
Now it couldn’t be true that Newcastle will go after two strikers in January surely?
We’re fairly sure that will not happen, and we probably only need one top class striker to round out the striker options at the club, and this lad can score goals with 9 goals in 15 appearances for FC Twente this season so far.
We’d also like to see another full-back come in, plus a center-half, and the Newcastle squad will then be ready to push for a top eight finish this season, and maybe even top six, at a stretch.
Comments welcome.

Comment #3I can’t see it tbh. Especially when we can get him for free in the summer. Pre-contract is what we’d go for if we really were interested. Barnetta is on a free this summer also. Wonder which freebies we will be after this summer.
Anyways for sat i think santon should defo start. Not to sure as to where as raylor played well v spurs apart from stopping completely at one point and simpson played poorly but i think he should get a start. Would like to see hba and marveaux start but i don’t think that is as needed as santon starting imo as simpson is the weak link in our back 4 i think

Comment #7Repost from last thread:
Manager of the season: Steve Bruce, for bringing the mackems to their knees
Jokes aside.
Only time will give us more trust and confidence in AP.
I’m tempted to say that our saviour has “returned” in a different form, but we all know that is being carried away, and we’ve been burned so many times by good periods turning into the only good period all season.
My respect and admiration for AP is ever increasing, and the fact that we continued to play some great football against Spurs showed me that this is no fluke, AP has got us playing the sexy football again, and i’m loving.
I think we had 436 completed passes against Spurs, same as the top 4 usually have during their matches.

And i think that’s the reason Santon will start in his place at RB. Simmo obviously has some stuff going on at home atm, according to his statement in court, so it makes sense to give the lad a break and start Santon.
It’s dangerous for Simmo tho, if Santon start, u can bet your ass he won’t be wanting to give the spot back.

Comment #12Would love it if we signed this kid, but the fact that teams like arsenal and liverpool, though below us atm, are interested aswell, I can see us being gazumped.
Theres also the fact Maiga is cheaper so chubby will go for him instead lol.

Comment #17i blinkin hope do go for him would be an awesome signing ive wanted him here for so long now, ive heard through a few people that wer planning on signing 2 strikers in january as Ba will be away and we want the new lads who come in intregated into the team and blended in over the 6 month to the summer, we want to do our business earlier especially the most important players because they could go to european champs and have an amazing tournement then they price doubles thats the reasons ive been told so hopefully the two strikers we go for are Maiga and De Jong

Comment #20what ive been told makes sense considering the likes of
Lovenkrands, Ranger, Xisco will all be going at the end of the season if not january.. leaving us with only Ba, Best and Shola as actual strikers and Ba is away for the next 2 jan/febs.. leaving Best and Shola.. so makes sense t buy the players earlier especially the ones who we think will do the best in the summer, would love to sign Shaqiri aswel but wont happen haha

Comment #22Andy @ post 3. He’s under 24 and an EU national, therefore even if he is out of contract, he won’t be free. £10M sounds about right to me.

Comment #24we’d have to pay close to what we’d be paying now in compensation and signing on fee anyways if we get him on a pre-contract plus they would be other clubs wanting to take that risk which would offer more than us but if we get in ther early we can get him straight away, if he does well in euro champs his compen will go up aswel as will his want for better wages..

Comment #34Looks a gem could be a class player. Although I thought we should have had a closer look at Ricky van Wolfswinkel, saw him play in the Europa last year for Utrecht he tore Celtic a new one and then got seriously injured. He went to Sporting Lisbon for 5million euros and is knocking them in for fun over there…anyone think we should take a punt on this guy?

Comment #37a still feel in order for us to sustain a strong challenge at the top we could do with signing another defender maybe a versatile one, do think Kadar will be back involved with the first team sooner or later as apparently Carver has been very impressed by his reserve and international performances..
RB – Simo, Taylor, Santon
LB – Santon, Taylor, Kadar
CB, Taylor, Colo, Williamson, Kadar, Perch
but in the summer i can imagine Perch and Simpson leaving which would mean we need atleast 2 defensive targets and ideally 1 more as wer short as it is
