Newcastle Not At Their Best But Get The Win

Steven Taylor suffered a broken nose in the second half today.

Steven Taylor – broke his nose today

The nose wouldn’t stop bleeding and Steven had to leave the filed as few times with blood on his face.

Wigan had lost their previous five league games, but they came out and should have been one up after just six minutes.

That’s when Victor Moses should have scored from 12 yards out when he thought he had blasted the ball in the net, but Newcastle’s goalkeeper Tim Krul made a world class save to somehow turn the ball over the bar.

Newcastle were flat in the first half and Wigan were the better side, but Alan Pardew changed things around in the second half,  and Ben Arfa came on for Leon Best, and the Frenchman made it a lot easier for the home side.

Ben Arfa looked complete class, and almost scored a few minutes before Yohan Cabaye smashed home a terrific goal to give Newcastle all 3 points.

Steven Taylor had this to say on the Newcastle site after the game:

“In the first-half, Wigan took control of the game and at times we did find it difficult but we stood firm and got through to half-time at 0-0.”  “The gaffer expressed a few things that he wanted and we came out second half and, I think, played much better.”

“We got the ball down and played like we have been this season, and in the second half I think we took control of the game and then it was just a matter of time in getting that goal.”

“It was a pure class goal from Yohan Cabaye – what a finish that was – and we deserved that, definitely, for the spirit that came from the team.”  “The back four stuck at it today. We were putting blocks in, the keeper pulled off a few saves and you need that.”

“I think it’s important to set the foundations and keep as many clean sheets as we can this season. If we do that, I don’t think we’ll go wrong.”

“My nose just wouldn’t stop bleeding,” The guy’s hand came across my nose and it wouldn’t stop bleeding for ages so eventually they these plug things in.”

“I was coughing out blood because it was difficult to breathe when you’ve got these things blocking your nose.”  “It was a crazy one for me – I haven’t experienced that before.”

“But would I have come off? No chance. It was just a broken nose – it’d take more than that for me to come off.

“I was a bit frustrated that the referee kept telling me to get off the pitch because of all the blood coming out. I kept saying ‘it’s not on my shirt’ but I can see my face was covered with blood because it was constantly bleeding.”

“It might put paid to my modelling career now, but hopefully the doctor can sort it out for me.:  “But listen, the main thing is we got three points today. People might say we were lucky – but we’ll take that all day.”

Newcastle’s winning goal came from an excellent cross from Ryan Taylor – with his left foot we may add – and Marveaux controlled the ball in great style before he laid it off for Yohan Cabaye, who hit an unstoppable right foot shot beyond Al Habsi in the Wigan goal.

Liverpool could only draw at home to Norwich today, and Newcastle are now 4 points above Liverpool after 9 games played, and Newcastle have a better goal difference.

Newcastle were hardly at their best today, but it’s the sign of a good team that can win when they have an off day.

I rarely disagree with you Ed but I didn’t think Ben Arfa made as much as an impact. He went past a few players and had a shot saved but he really needs to know when to pass. Too many times he was robbed of the ball and too many times he wasted opportunities. Marveaux was the difference, pacy, could pass and ultimately set up the goal brilliantly! 😀

When you’ve got a solid, composed and hard working back four unit, a goalkeeper behind them who looks as if nothing will beat him and two tigers in the middle of the field plus a winger who’s prepared to run his nuts off for a full 90 minutes and take defenders on with skill and determination, you’ve got the makings of a side that’s really hard to beat.
That’s why we are where we are at the moment.
What we need now is to get Ben Arfa up to full speed, get Marveaux in for Obertan and buy that cracking striker in January and we are really in business.
Make no mistake – our league position is no fluke.

marvy was def the difference and hatem did nowt. although when hatem does nothing you can still see his class ofc and when starts starting i think he will bring the entire midfield and forward line up a notch. at least i hope they do!

Is it me? Or is it a natural fear of Tiote from you? It’s just that I thought that Cheik lost and couldn’t hold the ball quite often today and to be dead honest the last few games.

It maybe just me but I think (justifiably) Benny is a little apprehensive when tackles come in ,as if hes scared the next one will put him out for another year.
The times hes come on, he keeps control of the ball when its close, but any ball just out of reach he wont go in for in case its a legbreaker.
Its only going to be a matter of time before he gets a hard tackle and realises hes gonna be ok, only then will we see the true Benny again.

pardew no 1, think we’ll see Smith on Wednesday. 🙁 But for 60 thousand a week he has to do something.

    @Geordie
It’s u mate, he won MOTM last match.
He had a tough time today, along with Cabaye, they we’re fighting against a 5 man midfield, and most of Wigans attacks came on the flanks, so they had a hard time.
Tiote and Cabaye battled today, hard, but were simply overrun at times.
Waiting for Pards to field that 5 man midfield now…

Have to agree with Pardew No 1 – what was Smith doing on the bench when we have Gosling, Vuckic and Guthrie?
A backward step in my opinion.

Dannyo, I think it’s Tiote. I think he’s been told to watch out for yellows and that has changed his game.

Just this match, Tiote was awful even he’ll admit it. Isn’t the Cabaye one, ‘He’s french, great hair, il habite en Angleterre Yohan Cabaye!’

One thing i’ll say in obertan’s defence is when get the ball he pulls players in. Saw this a few times today. He gets closed down so has little chance then to finish.

Needs a bit more vision of what the next couple moves could be and play to that. It’s like he runs so fast he forgets his head….

Would be great to see him play some more one two’s with Simmo… But he’s another player that is solid without the vision in attack.

Time for Marv to get in on action though him and Santon would be killer on right (but they can’t play left of course – it says on football manager ; )

Reckon this was the game that Pardew should have shuffled the pack, their was a lot of complacency on the pitch by us today – though Wigan did well first half.

Second half we couldn’t really up the tempo noticeably- so not sure I agree with Saylor’s points on that. Marveaux and – dare I say – wor shola helped do that and just that little bit more awareness in the team won it…

Hope Pardew has the balls to change it around a bit in the league.. and not just hand a couple of crumbs out in the Cup.

    ‘Ben Arfa looked complete class’

Sorry but I don’t think most fans in the stadium would agree. He kept on loosing the ball and trying to take it past the whole team instead of just playing the simple ball. He’s a gifted player and he isn’t 100% back to his best yet but he needs someone to have a word with him. ‘Ball greedy’ comes to mind.

    2) they mistook Guti for Raylor during the defensive ‘big up’ section
