Alan Pardew will field a strong team for tonight’s game at Ewood Park in the 4th round of the Carling Cup.
Alan Pardew – on the sidelines on Saturday
If Newcastle can remain unbeaten tonight, they will go through to the quarter finals of the competition, since a result will be decided tonight one way or another, with extra time being played and penalties if necessary.
Cardiff City and Crystal Palace are two sides through to the last eight from last night’s games, so on Saturday, when the draw for the quarter finals takes place, a home tie against one of them would be very good.
Cheick Tiote will not play tonight, but the news today is he’ll be fit for the tough league game at Stoke City next Monday afternoon, and there’s talk again today that Alan Pardew will bring in 19 year-old Mehdi Abeid in his place.
But it’s hard to know exactly what team Alan Pardew will pick tonight since he has given nothing away. We’ll take a shot at the likely team in this article and again, when we bring out out Match Preview later today.
Danny has talked today about the game, but we have a suspicion he will not start tonight but that the Italian 20 year-old Davide Santon will get his first start for the club at right back.
This is what Danny said:
“Maybe last year if we didn’t play well, we didn’t win. At times we have played really well this season but our most important, our most satisfying wins are when you don’t play well and you still win 1-0.”
“Sometimes they’re the sweetest victories. If you’re just a machine that doesn’t play well but you still come home with three points, that shows how far we’ve come.”
“A win would be massive. Everyone in the dressing room would love to make it to Wembley and Colo would love to lift a trophy,”
“Our fans would love to see that because it’s been so long. It’s such an important game. We want to keep the unbeaten run going and be in the hat for the next round.”
“Things haven’t been going to great for them but they work hard and they’ve got good players,” “We’re focused on reaching the quarter-finals.”
Ben Arfa, Sylvain Marveaux and Davide Santon seem certain to start tonight, and maybe Mehdi Abeid in place of Cheick Tiote in the middle of the park, but we’re not sure if Steven Taylor will be able to make it by playing in a a mask, but since James Perch is the only one available to back-up Steven he may start the game.
So this is a possible starting side tonight, which is different from he side we thought may start the game yesterday :
Krul
Santon Coloccini (c) Taylor(S) Taylor (R)
Marveaux Abeid Cabaye Gutierrez
Ben Arfa
Ba
That’s quite a strong team, and if the lads can be near their best they could win the game tonight, but the Blackburn players will be playing all out to try to rescue manager Steve Kean from getting the sack.
But the strange news last night was that there are rumors that Steve Kean is about to sign a contract extension for Blackburn with the Indian owners, who have called Steve a world class manager and issued a statement a couple of weeks ago, stating the team has been playing good football this season.
Go figure.
What’s your team for tonight?

Comment #1I can’t see Krul starting tonight.
I personally think the team will be quite close to what you’ve said though, Ed.
If I was picking the midfield/strikers though, I’d give this a shot:
Abeid Cabaye
Marveaux Ben Arfa Vuckic
Ba
Possibly a bit too positive for an away game?

Comment #2Ed, your line up there is probably our best line up possible without Tiote, however Santon must play in one of the full-back positions!

Comment #3I’d start Sammy upfront. Give ba’s knee a rest!

Comment #4I would probably give Jonas a rest (on the bench tho) and keep Oba on the right to give Blackburn hell and put Marveaux on the left!

Raylor – Saylor – Coloccini – Santon
Obertan – Abeid – Cabaye – Marvaux
Ben arfa
Best
That would be my team for tonights victory against Blackburn, Ba could need a rest, but on the bench and Best needs to find the net again. Questionmarks about the right side of the midfield, cant decide if Obertan will keep his place or give Vuckic or Gosling a chance.

Comment #13New Boy > agreed, as well as a decent CB for the squad.
TS_77 > i have no doubt that Oba will keep his place, but i would have to agree with your selection, and DEFINITELY agree with moving Raylor back to the right to bring in Santoon at LB!

Comment #19Deffo hard to know what team we’ll field tonight. But i hope it’s a match where we’re going for the win. Field some offensive and technical players, and Blackburn won’t have a chance…

Comment #21Almost certainly playing a reserve team (with a few regulars) as in the previous round. Blackburn is in threat of relegation, and will definitely be resting their starters too anyway. Let’s also not forget almost every big club (bar Spurs) is still in the tournament, so AP won’t be going all out.
My team:
Krul
Santon Perch Colo Ferguson
Gosling Guthrie Abeid Marveaux
Arfa
Loverkrands
Nojdani
